Injury may sideline Spartans star in ESPNU match-up Friday with St. Mary’s of Stockton

It hasn’t been made official, but it looks like Arizona State-committed De La Salle (Concord) star running back Dasmond Tautalatasi may not suit up up for the ESPNU nationally-televised game in Stockton on Friday night against St. Mary’s.

Tautalatasi, a preseason first team all-North Coast Section selection, was injured with the score tied 0-0, in the second quarter of the state No. 1 ranked Spartans 21-14 comeback victory over No. 19 Serra of San Mateo.

This afternoon, I popped into the offices of SportStars Magazine located just east of the De La Salle campus, and inquired of Editor Chace Bryson if he knew whether “Das” (as they call him in Sparta) was going to play.

“I wouldn’t think so,” Bryson said. “I heard it was a dislocated elbow but it hasn’t been totally confirmed.”

If Tautalatasi cant play the load will once again fall on double-threat quarterback Chris Williams and running back John Velasco.

Williams pulled out the victory with his legs against Serra.

After a big game in the opener against Concord Clayton Valley, Velasco took over at running back when Das went down, but he only had 59 yards on 20 carries and didn’t find the end zone.

One can only imagine the midnight oil the brain-trust at De La Salle, headed by first-year head coach Justin Alumbaugh, but still including legendary Bob Ladouceur, is burning up looking for ways to bolster the offense.

We’ll keep you posted about Tautalatasi if we get any updated news.
