The process to choose the 34th annual Cal-Hi Sports all-state teams is underway and includes input from everyone. This step is to post our first list of nominees. Go inside to see how parents, coaches and fans can contribute.

Note: This list is compiled so that coaches, parents and readers can submit additions, corrections and make comments (anonymously of course) about which players should be selected when all information is received. Nominations are always welcome. This list will be updated and posted one more time prior to the teams being finalized.

What We’re Looking For: You can send a nomination with each athlete’s height, position, year in school, significant statistics. Comparing a player not on the board yet to one who already is can be very important toward eventual selection. Limit each nomination to one page please. Send to: markjtennis@gmail.com or FAX (209) 463-1219 or call (209) 463-9050.

Also, be aware that not all freshmen, sophomores or juniors we are considering for all-state underclass may be on this list. We also normally wind up choosing players who aren’t on this list for some of the smaller CIF divisions as well. These players will come to light when all of the various major newspaper-based honor squads are released.

Format: Ten players will be chosen all-state overall first team with 10 more on second team and 10 more on third team. Each of the first 30 players are written up. There also are 10 players each for first team all-state and second team all-state for Division I, Division II, Division III, Division IV and Division V. The all-state underclass team will consist of juniors (20), sophomores (15) and freshmen (10).

Don’t assume we know all there is to know about a player on the list, either. Send us info to make sure all facts are turned in and placed into our files.

Ian Fox from Redondo Union is a no brainer! Carried them to 21 straight wins to win Div 2 state title! Single handedly beat Modesto Christian at Tarkanian Classic in Vegas with 39 points while being overall leading scorer in that event! Was All-Tournament in every tournament entered this season all as a junior this year!

Joe Furstinger of Santa Margarita for Southern Section.
Led the incredibly tough trinity league in rebounds and blocks. Also finished top four in points. Led a weak Santa Margarita team to CIF championship game. Finished the season averaging 17 points, 11 boards, and 3 blocks. Finished first team trinity league and first team CIF division 3. Currently ranked the 8th best junior in the state according to ESPN. He should definitely be first team.

Just heard that Corey Silverstrom of Bullard, and Marcus Junior of Clovis West getting ready to go at it again. Unlike the Central Section Finals, where they put on a spectular show, both players of the game for their respective teams, this time they’ll be on the same team in the North vs South 2nd Annual Game at Mission Oak High School-Tulare CA. Saturday, April 6, 2013. My money will be on the North, any takers??

Like Winfield (Marin Academy) graduated last year…… And how do you not have 6’3 G Ryan Diew (Head-Royce) on there? He absolutely killed everyone he played against this season despite box-and-ones and other schemes averaging about 23ppg and 8 boards and he led his team to the NCS semis and 2nd round of the NorCal playoffs. Also Jeremy Dennis from (St. Mary’s Albany) needs to be on there as well.

When are the deadlines for these nominations over, and will the All Star game help to propel new nominations, hurt or help the players who played in the game? Both the girls and boys games were close.

    • Posted April 7, 2013 at 9:03 pm | Permalink

Deadline is still more than a week away. We accept info right up until the moment the teams are pushed live on the site and released. There are many all-star games. It can help for a few “on the bubble” players, but 80 to 90 percent of it is based more on what happened during the actual just-completed high school season.

DEVIN GREENE Freshman for Sheldon had some Big games this year. Especially at the beginning with D williams sidelined. He had 17 against Archbishop Mitty earlier in the year. He started many games early and was one of the first off the bench on a star studded senior dominated team.
