The only big upset came in Ventura County where state No. 15 Pacifica of Oxnard was taken down by Newbury Park. Inglewood won a big matchup in the South Bay region of L.A. over Palos Verdes while Carlsbad defeated Mission Hills in a game involving the No. 1 vs No. 2 teams in the San Diego Union-Tribune rankings. No. 1 Santa Margarita and No. 2 St. John Bosco also won big to set up their showdown next Friday in Bellflower.

(Rankings based on State Top 50 posted on Oct. 6)
(Through reported results of Friday, Oct. 9)
*Forfeit wins or losses not included.

1. Santa Margarita (Rancho SM) 7-0
Defeated No. 16 Servite (Anaheim) 27-3. The Eagles gave up an early field goal, but got some momentum later in the first half and led 21-3. Adrian Petero had a 56-yard TD run get the scoring started, scored again later in the game on a 2-yard run and now has 13 TDs on the season. Santa Margarita will be at No. 2 St. John Bosco next Friday.

2. St. John Bosco (Bellflower) 6-1
Defeated No. 7 Lutheran (Orange) 28-14. It was an avenging win of sorts for Bosco as it won against an OLu squad that got a 20-19 upset win last season in the first round of the CIF Southern Section D1 playoffs. Koa Malau’ulu broke a 7-7 tie in the first half with a TD pass to D.J. Tubbs, then it was a TD pass to Kuika Moaalii and then he scored on a 15-yard run. It was 28-7 before the Lancers scored. Bosco is hosting No. 1 Santa Margarita next Friday in a matchup we’re going to be down there to see.

3. Sierra Canyon (Chatsworth) 7-0
Defeated No. 35 Serra (Gardena) 58-0. It was 44-0 at halftime in one of the worst losses that Serra has ever suffered. Several turnovers and mistakes helped make it a rout in the second quarter. Sierra Canyon is unlikely to have a close game for the rest of the regular season.

4. De La Salle (Concord) 6-0
Did not play. After getting their big wins over the previous two weeks vs Corona Centennial and Cathedral Catholic of San Diego, the Spartans were off this week on a bye. They play next week vs Monte Vista (Danville).

5. Mater Dei (Santa Ana) 5-2
Defeated No. 17 JSerra (SJ Capistrano) 41-7. It’s hard to believe the Monarchs needed this win to avoid a three-game losing streak, but more importantly the offense showed a lot of explosiveness that has been lacking. The two losses — to Bishop Gorman and Santa Margarita — also weren’t exactly to chump teams. Freshman Paytyn Guess passed for 203 yards and two TDs.

6. Centennial (Corona) 4-3
Defeated Murrieta Valley (Murrieta) 42-20. The Huskies are getting Norco next, which lost Friday 42-16 to Chaparral of Temecula. Chaparral, as thought in the preseason, is going to be the team that may give Centennial its toughest test in a league game this season.

7. Lutheran (Orange) 4-3
LOST to No. 2 St. John Bosco (Bellflower) 28-14. Highlights for the Lancers included taking a 7-0 lead in the first quarter plus a 78-yard TD run by sophomore Ryan Christianson. They may now be 4-3, but still may not drop in the next rankings since all three losses (another was to Sierra Canyon) are to elite opponents.

8. Central East (Fresno) 6-0
Defeated Clovis 27-0. It was the first shutout of the season for the Bengals and came against a Clovis team that had a win earlier this season vs Los Gatos (team that upset Pittsburg last week). A big game with No. 24 Buchanan will take place next Friday.

9. Folsom 7-0
Defeated No. 50 Whitney (Rocklin) 49-25. UCLA commit Rob Larson is back playing WR for the Bulldogs. They gave up an early TD to the unbeaten Wildcats for a 7-0 deficit, but scored four times after that for a 28-7 lead. The team’s big game vs No. 13 Oak Ridge is next Friday, but the Trojans will be coming in after a loss.

10. Mission Viejo 6-1
Defeated No. 47 Yorba Linda 27-26 on Thursday. Jack Junker scored on runs of 77 and 73 yards with the 73-yarder breaking a tie in the fourth quarter. Yorba Linda scored with 1:31 left, but had a two-point conversion run stuffed. Next week, Mission is going to play state No. 12 San Clemente.

11. Serra (San Mateo) 4-1
Did not play on Friday. The Padres are playing Archbishop Mitty of San Jose at home on Saturday.

12. San Clemente 7-0
Defeated Los Alamitos 40-0. The Tritons rolled over the Griffins in an Alpha League game and will look to knock off No. 10 Mission Viejo next Friday. San Clemente had a 28-0 win over Yorba Linda last week and Yorba Linda just lost by one point to Mission Viejo.

13. Oak Ridge (El Dorado Hills) 4-2
LOST to Tabor Academy of Massachusetts, 20-17, in a non-league game on Friday. We don’t know much about Tabor Academy, but it has some D1 recruits. The Trojans’ other loss is to No. 8 Central East. They have No. 9 Folsom next week.

14. Carlsbad 7-0
Defeated state No. 37 Mission Hills (San Marcos) 38-21. In a matchup that also was a No. 1 vs No. 2 in the San Diego Union-Tribune rankings, Darian Webb was the man of the hour as he rushed for 218 yards on 29 carries and scored three times.

15. Pacifica (Oxnqrd) 5-2
LOST to Newbury Park, 21-16. Team that dropped its first two games to Westlake (Westlake Village) and Hart (Newhall) pulled off the upset of the Tritons. The Panthers’ defense held Pacifica’s offense to less than 200 yards passing and less than 100 yards rushing.

16. Servite (Anaheim) 3-4
LOST to No. 1 Santa Margarita on Friday, 27-3. The Friars actually took a 3-0 lead in the Trinity League game, but Santa Margarita’s defense was dominant throughout.

Junior QB Tommy Devany had a highlight reel TD run plus another TD pass he hit on after scrambling for several seconds that helped Buchanan post its win on Friday vs Clovis West. Photo: avh.flicks / Instagram.com.

17. JSerra (SJ Capistrano) 4-3
LOST to No. 5 Mater Dei of Santa Ana on Friday, 41-7. The only TD of the night for the Lions came when they were behind 41-0.

18. Palos Verdes (PV Estates) 6-1
LOST to No. 20 Inglewood 26-23. In a game played on Friday afternoon on the Palos Verdes Peninsula, a 51-yard field goal that missed on the final play of the game resulted in the Sea Kings’ first loss of the season. They had to try that long kick after officials reportedly didn’t see QB Ryan Rakowski spike the ball after a completion with 13 seconds left, instead noticing a couple of Inglewood players who were down.

19. Cardinal Newman (Santa Rosa) 4-2
Defeated San Marin of Novato, 40-0. This marked the league opener for the Cardinals, who have an overtime loss to Folsom and a 42-3 loss to De La Salle but also a 31-0 win against No. 33 Archbishop Riordan of San Francisco.

20. Inglewood 7-1
Defeated No. 18 Palos Verdes (PV Estates) 26-23. The Sentinels (only loss to Westlake of Austin, Texas) trailed 16-6 at halftime but held PV to just one second-half TD. Semaj Welch put them ahead with 1:10 left on a 11-yard run. Lincoln Jahn also had three TD passes.

21. San Ramon Valley (Danville) 6-0
Defeated Livermore 42-7. Owen Power ran for TDs of 80, 70 and 25 yards to power the Wolves. They still have unbeaten De La Salle and Monte Vista to play in the regular season.

22. Bishop Amat (La Puente) 6-1
Defeated No. 44 Chaminade (West Hills) 28-7. Despite a late scratch of starting QB Domenico Duran, the Lancers’ defense stepped up in the Mission League win. Amat’s only loss is to No. 17 JSerra.

23. Cathedral Catholic (San Diego) 3-3
Did not play. Head coach Sean Doyle’s squad has this week off with a bye. It has wins over Helix, Granite Hills of El Cajon and Mater Dei Catholic with losses to No. 7 Orange Lutheran, Chandler (Arizona) and No. 4 De La Salle of Concord.

24. Buchanan (Clovis) 6-0
Defeated Clovis West of Fresno 45-28. The Bears did their part to set up a showdown with No. 8 Central East by outscoring the Golden Eagles, 24-7, in the second half. It also was a matchup between two of the top-ranked junior QBs in the state, Tommy Devany of Buchanan and Jamar Howard of Clovis West.

25. Huntington Beach 7-0
Defeated Dana Hills (Dana Point) 21-16. It was another win in a close game for the Oilers but Dana Hills also was 6-0 coming in so the closeness of the matchup was not a surprise. Brady Edmunds ran for a 12-yard TD with four minutes left, then the HB defense forced three straight incompletions from their own 15-yard line to clinch th win.

26. Grant (Sacramento) 5-1
Defeated McClatchy (Sacramento) 57-0. The Pacers (only loss to No. 8 Central East) should have a tougher matchup next week when they play 6-0 Destiny Christian of Sacramento.

27. Pittsburg 3-3
Defeated Liberty (Brentwood) 41-19. A week after their one-point loss to Los Gatos, the Pirates took out some frustration on the visiting Lions. They led 26-0 after the first quarter. Their other losses are to No. 2 St. John Bosco and No. 10 Mission Viejo.

28. Crean Lutheran (Irvine) 5-2
Defeated No. 45 Capistrano Valley (Mission Viejo) 30-22. The Saints moved to 2-0 in the Bravo League (along with Corona del Mar) and handed Capo Valley its first loss. They had to do it without top RB Caleb Bey Jr., who had the flu. Head coach Rick Curtis also had to get through coaching against his son, Sean, who is the head coach of Capistrano Valley.

29. Notre Dame (Sherman Oaks) 7-0
Defeated Loyola (Los Angeles) 49-21. It may settling into a battle between the Knights and Bishop Amat for second-place in the Mission League behind No. 3 Sierra Canyon. Those two play next Friday at Notre Dame.

30. Norco 5-2
LOST to No. 31 Chaparral (Temecula) 42-16. Dane Weber of Chaparral is now back at QB for the Pumas. Norco’s first loss of the season was to No. 1 Santa Margarita. Chaparral (4-3 with losses to San Clemente, Mission Viejo and Mountain Ridge of Utah without Weber) will be moving up in the next rankings.
