With the elite baseball teams in the state all tending to play each other multiple times in tournaments, league games and in the CIF section/regional playoffs with deep lineups and players watching their number of reps very closely so as not to get hurt, any players off of those teams setting any kinds of records is becoming a remnant of the past.

It’s much different for those at small schools. Players there may not be ranked and evaluated like those from big schools, but they can still do some amazing things at the plate and on the mound. Some of them also will develop into more highly ranked prospects after high school. They always have.

Looking at players from last season that have gained entries into the Cal-Hi Sports state record files, two from small schools that are back for their senior seasons this spring are Drew Perry from LeRoy Greene Academy of Sacramento and Peyton Van Worth of Dos Palos.

Perry first gained a big headline when he tied the state record by connecting for a pair of grand slams in a 16-6 win by his team against Galt. Perry then finished the season batting .700 in 22 games on 42 hits in 60 at-bats. That one requires 40 at bats to qualify for. There’s another batting average record category with a 70 at-bat minimum that Perry didn’t qualify for. Drew also had eight homers and 55 RBI as a junior.

Van Worth comes from a family at Dos Palos that we’ve been following for many years. He’s a three-sport athlete for the Broncos and last season on the diamond he led a 26-3 squad with 55 runs scored. That was tied for the reported state lead with Ripon Christian’s Grant Sonke (a graduated senior), which is a total that has put both players into the state records.

The only other player from last season who was listed as a non-senior who has been added to the state record archives is Sammy Salcedo from Wilson of Los Angeles. It’s in the category of stolen bases for one season, which can be sketchy totals to believe, but in his case they appear to be okay. Salcedo stole 54 bases in 24 games last season, which is now No. 6 on the all-time single season state list. It takes 51 to get into the files and no other player was reported last season with more than 50. Salcedo also batted .456 with 26 runs scored.

WE’RE GOING WITH BUCHANAN AS HAVING STATE’S BEST RECORD SINCE 2010

This section of newly added state baseball record totals is for the teams and programs.

We already had a category for best record in the state for the decade of the 2010s, which was accomplished by Buchanan of Clovis. The Bears were No. 1 in the nation twice during the decade and compiled a mark of 261-58-1 between 2010 and 2019. They were “only” 22-10 last season, but prior to that for the 2020s they were 9-1 (pandemic season), 29-3 and 25-5 for a record so far this decade of 85-19.

We’re going to start adding best records since 2020 after the current season, but already added a new one for best record in the state since 2010. Buchanan would be 346-77-1 for that and that’s the total we’re going with unless there’s another school out there that let’s us know that its record is better.

Previously mentioned Dos Palos at 26-3 last season in the CIF Central Section also gained a state record entry as a team with a .399 team batting average. The Broncos went 313 for 784 at the plate in their games. They weren’t the only team to have a .399 batting average, either. Ganesha of Pomona, which won its first 20 games before losing in the CIF regional playoffs after it won a CIFSS title, also checked in at .399. The Giants were reported at 225 for 564 at the plate.

Another team from last season that was added to the state team records for offense was Ripon Christian. The Knights scored 333 runs in 31 games, including 15 in the CIF NorCal D5 playoff win (15-7) over Firebaugh and then six more in a 7-6 loss to Lowell of San Francisco.

There also were two teams that put up totals last season for pitching in the category of lowest team ERA for a season that are among the all-time state best. We already mentioned one of those teams, Ganesha, which had 15 shutouts in its 21 games and had seven earned runs allowed in 118 2/3 innings for a 0.41 ERA. The other team was Turlock Christian (another small school). It had a 0.84 team ERA in 23 games.

MORE PLAYERS ADDED TO ALL-TIME
STATE RECORDS

Ernesto Duenas (Gladstone, Covina)
Competing for a school that closed at the end of the 2022-23 school year, Duenas had 18 strikeouts in a no-hitter vs Baldwin Park.

James Durney (Loyalton)
He had enough at-bats (42) so that his .738 batting average (31 for 42) was added on to the all-time state list.

Gavin Farinha (Turlock Christian)
He had two no-hitters last season after throwing six as a junior to finish with eight for his career. That is one short of the state career record. Farinha also makes a different all-time state list for a career with a 0.15 ERA.

Jake Hixenbaugh (Atascadero)
He had four doubles during a 15-2 victory vs Pioneer Valley of Santa Maria. Graduated senior.

Tyler Mahon (Campbell Hall, North Hollywood)
There were two pitchers reported after last season with a 0.00 ERA that ties the state record. Mahon was one of them. He pitched 61 innings.

Isac Mandujano (Dos Palos)
Teammate of Payton Van Worth, still playing this season for the Broncos after scoring 55 runs last season, was right behind with 52 runs (also makes the book).

Cayden Munster (Clovis West, Fresno)
The current freshman at Fresno State has gained an entry into the state record for hitting home runs last season in five straight games.

Ricardo Ojeda (Valencia)
Graduated senior had 12 straight strikeouts that helped him pitch a one-hitter with 19 Ks in a win vs Saugus.

Ryan Ose (Port of Los Angeles, Wilmington)
In 42 career games, Ose came through for a .591 batting average (68 for 115).

Jalen Rogers (Bethel, Vallejo)
He led the state in triples with nine, which was one short of the state record list qualifying total, but made it into the book by collecting three in one game against Kennedy of Richmond.

Noah Wong (United Christian Academy, Rancho Cucamonga)
We added a new category before last season for average strikeouts per inning. Wong is now on that list after striking out 117 batters in 47 2/3 innings for a 2.45 average.

Rob York (Turlock Christian)
Teammate of Gavin Farinha (see above) also was a main reason why team ERA was 0.84 in 23 games. York had a 0.00 ERA in 52 2/3 innings. It was one of two 0.00 ERAs reported in the state.
