It’s time for the next post in the release of the 41st edition of the Cal-Hi Sports All-State Baseball Teams and these players are the ones selected from schools that were in CIF section or regional playoffs during the 2022 spring season that made them medium or small school in class. We already did the underclass teams and still have the overall first and second teams plus third team (seniors only & large schools only) to be announced.

It may be medium schools and small schools, but several of the players who are being honored on this year’s Cal-Hi Sports All-State Teams for those categories have already received major honors in their local areas. This is California after all, too, the biggest and best state for baseball of them all by far. There are a lot of great players to evaluate from all corners of the state.

Among those on first team medium schools are CIF San Diego Section pitcher of the year Destin Allen-Fox from Santana of Santee, CIF L.A. City Section Player of the Year J.B. Dalumpines from Birmingham of Lake Balboa, Redwood Empire Player of the Year Austin Steeves from Casa Grande of Petaluma, Ventura County Star Player of the Year Tanner Beltowski from Buena of Ventura, San Diego Section Athlete of the Year Jake Jackson from Madison of San Diego (he also starred in football & basketball) and Modesto Bee Large Schools Player of the Year Braxton Thomas from Central Catholic of Modesto.

That doesn’t include the two players listed below who already have been selected as the Cal-Hi Sports State Players of the Year for medium schools and small schools — Toby Twist from Bakersfield Christian and Cody New of Hesperia Christian.

It also doesn’t include two players from medium schools first team who may be selected in a higher round on Sunday night in the MLB Draft in Seattle — pitchers Cole Schoenwetter from San Marcos of Santa Barbara and Joey Volchko from Redwood of Visalia.

All players from medium and small schools can be selected first team all-state overall or second team all-state overall, but would not be eligible for third team, which we reserve for large schools and seniors only since we have separate categories for medium, small and underclassmen.
Those teams have already begun to be chosen.

The only team on either medium or small that was able to have more than two players on either first team or second team was final D2 state No. 1 Cardinal Newman of Santa Rosa. The Cardinals were D1 for the CIF NorCal playoffs, but were D3 for their section and have been medium schools for all-state consideration for many years. D3 final state No. 1 Central Catholic of Modesto also has two on first team medium schools.

Final Note: Other than a few exceptions, schools that were eligible to be in the Cal-Hi Sports Division IV or Division V state rankings are considered small. Most baseball teams that were D2 were considered large except for a few. Those that were in Division III and a few that were in D4 are medium. In our system, some schools with large enrollments in lower playoff divisions are just too big to be small schools. There is no all-state large schools team, but there is a third team added to the overall teams in which only players from large schools are eligible.

Here are the 2023 Cal-Hi Sports All-State Baseball Teams for medium schools and small schools:
