These were done after all games of Saturday, Nov. 27 but before the CIF is meeting on Sunday. Once those come out, compare and contrast in good fun to see which ones you like best. Note that we don’t know while doing this about any schools that may opt out.

OPEN DIVISION
Mater Dei (Santa Ana) 11-0
No question here after win over Servite on Friday night. The question will be more about which team MD will play in two weeks for state title — De La Salle or Serra (San Mateo).

DIVISION 1AA
Cathedral Catholic of San Diego (SD Open Division) 9-2** vs. Lutheran of Orange (CIFSS D2) 10-4
Comment: Don’t see how this could be any different.

DIVISION 1A
Serra of Gardena (CIFSS D3) 9-4 vs. Long Beach Poly (CIFSS D4) 11-3
Comment: The CIF doesn’t usually go for rematches but for this one why not? 28-27 was the score when they played before.

DIVISION 2AA
Helix of La Mesa (SD D1) 9-3 vs. Mater Dei Catholic of Chula Vista (SD D3) 11-0
Comment: These two were supposed to play this season but didn’t. All of San Diego would be fired up if this matchup was announced.

DIVISION 2A
Valencia (CIFSS D5) 8-4 vs. Scripps Ranch of San Diego (SD D2) 11-1
Comment: These two are just eight places from each other in computer rankings.

DIVISION 3AA
Newport Harbor of Newport Beach (CIFSS D6) 7-7 vs. Patrick Henry of San Diego (SD D4) 10-2
Comment: This is too high from where to put in L.A. City Open champion Birmingham.

DIVISION 3A
Aquinas of San Bernardino (CIFSS D7) 9-5 vs. Birmingham of Lake Balboa (L.A. City Open) 8-5
Comment: Aquinas lost in 2019 D2-AA state final to Clayton Valley of Concord.

DIVISION 4AA
Serrano of Phelan (CIFSS D8) 11-3 vs. Central Valley Christian of Visalia (Central Sec D3) 10-4
Comment: We’d have the first two Central Section teams on the north side with the other four in the south. Last week, team that Serrano beat in its final, Buena of Ventura, was right next to CVC in computer state rankings.

DIVISION 4A
Independence of Bakersfield (Central Sec D4) 8-6 vs Colony of Ontario (CIFSS D9) 8-6
Comment: Similar squads and schools in many ways.

DIVISION 5AA
Venice (LA City D1) 8-3 vs. Northview of Covina (CIFSS D10) 8-6
Comment: Looks like these two were very close to each other last week in the computer rankings as well.

DIVISION 5A
Northwood of Irvine (CIFSS D11) 9-5 vs Palo Verde of Blythe (SD D5) 11-2
Comment: Can’t do much about Blythe’s location regarding travel.

DIVISION 6AA
Quartz Hill (CIFSS D12) 9-4 vs. Righetti of Santa Maria (Central Sec D5) 6-8
Comment: Both teams playing very well right now.

DIVISION 6A
Arlington of Riverside (CIFSS D13) vs. Morro Bay (Central Sec D6) 7-6
Comment: Morro Bay & Righetti haven’t played each other so CIF could consider that one between the two Central Sec schools, but they were a bit too far apart in computer rankings. Arlington vs. Quartz Hill also would be better for travel.

DIVISION 7AA
Loara of Anaheim (CIFSS D14) 8-6) vs. El Camino Real of Woodland Hills (LA City D2) 6-7
Comment: ECR beat Taft 49-14 in regular season.

DIVISION 7A
Taft of Woodland Hills (LA City D3) 6-7
Comment: These are all qualifying teams. We don’t know of any schools that will opt out. Nothing personal, but Taft would be the bottom team among these qualifying squads.

Aside from a rematch, another factor working against a Serra-LB Poly game is that both teams are from the SS, which something the section really pushed back against the last time. I don’t really see why the SDS might not want to do the same.

This is actually a decent opportunity to pit private school vs private and public vs public, but I’m guessing the SDS may want to promote their D-I over their D-III. Helix didn’t lose to Mission Viejo quite as bad as did LB Poly.

Had Helix-Serra, LB Poly-MD Catholic all week, but just know the San Diego fans would love for Helix-MDCath to play. Serra-LB Poly also was such a great game when they did play, too. If it wasn’t a one-point outcome, wouldn’t have gone that way.
