State Top 25 Weekend Scoreboard

These four players from Oak Ridge (El Dorado Hills) stopped to pose as they were running off the field after 24-14 win on Friday against Turlock in CIF Sac-Joaquin Section D1 playoffs. The Trojans aren’t yet in the State Top 25, but probably will be up there if they win next week in the semifinals vs. 11-0 Inderkum. Photo: Mark Tennis.

Saturday update added with one top 10 team in action and another in top 20. On Friday, three of the four CIF Southern Section Division I quarterfinals were won by routs, including those by No. 1 Mater Dei and No. 2 St. John Bosco. The big story of the night, however, was from the CIF San Diego Section Open Division where the finish of Carlsbad’s upset of Cathedral Catholic was absolutely bonkers and top seed Helix’s win over St. Augustine was decided by a pick six. No. 6 Folsom also needs a fourth down stop in the end zone to turn back Edison of Stockton 45-42.

Note: Look for a brand new State Top 50 set of football rankings that won’t simply be a list on Monday. We’ll have insights and breakdowns based on more than 40 years of going to Friday night games with an overview of the state’s top teams and what’s coming up that just can’t be matched. It’s more than 8,000 words of jam-packed info. Each new set of rankings will be for Gold Club members only. The late Friday/Weekend Scoreboards will continue to be free posts and will provide snippets of info, comments and more.

(Through reported results of Saturday, Nov. 17)
THANKS TO NORTHERN CALIFORNIA CORRESPONDENT DANIEL POULTER FOR CONTRIBUTING TO THIS POST.

1. Mater Dei (Santa Ana) 11-0
Defeated No. 12 Bishop Amat 63-23 on Friday CIF Southern Section D1 playoffs. Bryce Young threw for seven TDs for the second time this season, three that came in the first quarter when the Monarchs took 28-0 lead. Mater Dei travels to play No. 4 Mission Viejo next week in the semifinals.

2. St. John Bosco (Bellflower) 10-1
Defeated No. 13 Calabasas 63-7 on Friday CIFSS D1 playoffs. Kris Hutson returned the opening kickoff 85 yards for a touchdown and then later in the first quarter caught a long TD pass from D.J. Uigalelei for a 21-7 lead. Bosco travels to play Corona Centennial (which will be No. 5 in next state rankings) next week in the semifinals.

3. De La Salle (Concord) 10-1
Head coach Justin Alumbaugh’s squad had little trouble with Amador Valley of Pleasanton on Friday in the first round of the NCS D1 playoffs, as the Spartans forced a running clock and rolled to a 69-14 victory. They were leading 49-0 in second quarter. Monte Vista (Danville) will be next in semifinals.

4. Mission Viejo 11-0
Defeated No. 5 Servite (Anaheim) 38-35 on Friday in CIFSS D1 playoffs. After Servite cut the lead to 31-28 late in the game, James McDonald took the ensuing kickoff back 82 yards to set up a 1-yard TD by Easton Mascarenas. The last TD for the Friars came with just 10 seconds left in the game.

Gary Bryant Jr. and team at Corona Centennial will get to play St. John Bosco next week at home after explosive 56-0 win this week vs. JSerra. Photo: @FootballRecruit / Twitter.com.

5. Servite (Anaheim) 7-4
LOST to No. 4 Mission Viejo 38-35 on Friday in CIFSS D1 playoffs. The Friars could only score once in the first half against Mission’s stingy defense (trailed 17-7), but Noah Fifita and the passing game got going in the second half. Get used to Servite being in the top five of the state since the young team will likely start out that high in 2020.

6. Folsom 10-1
The Bulldogs rarely have to sweat before they arrive in the SJS Division 1 finals, but they received everything they could handle from 10-2 Edison (Stockton) on Friday. UC Davis commit CJ Hutton needed to break up a pass in the end zone on fourth down to avoid the upset. Folsom escaped with a 45-42 victory. Edison is a team to watch for next season. The Bulldogs play Monterey Trail (Elk Grove) in next week’s semifinals.

7. Centennial (Corona) 9-2
The difference between great and pretty darn good isn’t that close in the CIFSS Division 1 playoffs, but Centennial bullied No. 11 JSerra (San Juan Capistrano) in a 56-0 rout. It’s the 13th straight year for the Huskies getting into the CIFSS semifinals. No. 2 St. John Bosco (Bellflower) will be the opponent.

8. Helix (La Mesa) 10-1
The San Diego Section was all kinds of funky on Friday as Helix needed a pick six from Sam Stewart to avoid the upset from No. 26 St. Augustine (SD). The Highlanders recorded a 12-7 victory and will take on Carlsbad at Southwestern College in the San Diego Section Open Division championship.

9. Central (Fresno) 11-0
Another week, another blowout in the Central Section, as the Grizzlies rolled to a 56-10 victory over Ridgeview (Bakersfield) on Friday in that section’s D1 playoffs.

10. Corona del Mar (Newport Beach) 12-0
Since the Sea Kings are sharing the Newport Harbor High stadium, their game vs. Cajon (San Bernardino) in the CIFSS D3 playoffs was played on Saturday with Newport Harbor getting the Friday night playoff game. CdM won 42-14 and advanced to next week’s semifinals. Big question remains is if CdM wins D3 title will it be higher on SoCal bowl board than D2 champion.

11. JSerra (San Juan Capistrano) 6-5
JSerra ran into a buzz-saw, as the Lions fell to No. 7 Centennial (Corona) 56-0 in a thrashing in the CIFSS Division 1 playoffs. It seems like they were just never the same once standout running back Chris Street suffered a knee injury in the early moments of their regular season finale against Mater Dei.

12. Bishop Amat (La Puente) 9-2
LOST to No. 1 Mater Dei (Santa Ana) 63-23 on Friday in CIFSS D1 playoffs. Cal-bound running back Damien Moore was not suited up (ankle). After falling behind 28-0, the Lancers did have a period of time in which they outscored the Monarchs 23-14.

13. Calabasas 7-3*
LOST to No. 2 St. John Bosco (Bellflower) 63-7 on Friday in CIFSS D1 playoffs. The highlight of the night for the Coyotes was knotting the score at 7-7 in the first quarter on a TD pass from Jaden Casey to Johnny Wilson.

14. Sierra Canyon (Chatsworth) 11-1
The Trailblazers found themselves in a shootout with an 8-4 Vista Murrieta (Murrieta) squad that was willing to dance, as the Trailblazers held on for a 42-28 victory in the CIFSS D2 playoffs. Quatro Sumlin had 122 yards on seven carries and three touchdowns. The two schools are also meeting on Saturday in the CIF Southern California D1 regional semifinals in girls volleyball.

15. Narbonne (Harbor City) 8-1***
***Season complete for Gauchos plus forfeits not included. Team is not eligible to compete for CIF L.A. City Section Open Division championship and also has forfeited all of its on-the-field victories this season. Still appearing in state rankings for the on-the-field victories the team did get.

16. Rancho Cucamonga 10-2
The Cougars scored 14 points in the first half and that’s all they would need to push past No. 35 Long Beach Poly 21-7 on Friday in CIFSS D2 playoffs.

Our book was published one year ago and was written so that almost all chapters are timeless. Now available on Amazon.com for less than $10.

17. Grace Brethren (Simi Valley) 11-1
Defeated No. 31 Lawndale 38-31 on Friday in CIFSS D3 playoffs. Both teams won CIF state titles last season — Grace Brethren in D2-AA and Lawndale in D2-A. Both also were moved up into the same CIFSS division this season after being in D4 and D5 last year.

18. (19) Cathedral Catholic (San Diego) 8-3
While No. 8 Helix avoided an upset in its semifinal game in the CIF San Diego Section Open Division, Cathedral Catholic wasn’t as lucky. The Dons forced a fumble late in the game as No. 33 Carlsbad was trying to run out the clock and that set up a touchdown to be within one point at 21-20. Cathedral Catholic then faked the extra point and failed on a two-point conversion. Carlsbad will now take on Helix of La Mesa in the section championship.

19. Serra (San Mateo) 10-1
After falling behind 14-0 in the first half, the Padres took control with 42 straight points and surged past Half Moon Bay 42-14 on Saturday in first round of eight-team CIF Central Coast Section D1 playoffs. Half Moon Bay was 10-0, but really is a small school, small town team that had no business being opposite Serra in a section playoff game.

20. Valley Christian (San Jose) 10-1
The Warriors had little trouble with fellow West Catholic Athletic League member 4-7 St. Francis (Mountain View), as Valley Christian posted a 25-3 victory in the first round of the CCS D1 playoffs. They will take on St. Ignatius (San Francisco) or Archbishop Mitty (San Jose) next week.

21. La Habra 10-2
Jumping out to a 35-13 lead over 8-4 Edison (Huntington Beach) on Friday in CIFSS D3 playoffs, the Highlanders then had to hold on late for a 35-27 victory. La Habra’s losses to Mission Viejo and Calabasas.

22. Upland 8-4*
The Highlanders had just scored in overtime and were going for the game winning two-point-conversion, but 5-star athlete Justin Flowe was stopped in the backfield, as 7-5 Chaminade (West Hills) upset Upland 28-27 in overtime on Friday in CIFSS D2 playoffs action. J.P. Reilly made the tackle for Chaminade.

23. Rancho Verde (Moreno Valley) 10-2
After holding No. 26 San Clemente scoreless in the first three quarters, the Tritons scored 13 points in the fourth quarter to pull off the victory over the Mustangs on Friday in CIFSS D2 playoffs. Jordan Jefferson had 204 rushing yards on 32 carries and the lone TD for Rancho Verde in defeat.

24. Pittsburg 10-1
The Pirates were too much for James Logan (Union City), as they cruised to a 41-0 victory on Friday in NCS D1 playoffs. The No. 2 seed in the division behind De La Salle will have a rematch with No. 25 Liberty (Brentwood) next week to likely see which one takes on De La Salle in the finals.

25. Liberty (Brentwood) 10-1
Oregon quarterback commit Jay Butterfield powered the Lions to a 50-18 over California (San Ramon) Friday in NCS D1 playoffs. This victory sets up Liberty to attempt next week to redo its lone loss of the season to No. 24 Pittsburg.

TEAMS ON THE BUBBLE

Alemany (Mission Hills) 9-2*
Took the long trip to Orange County on Friday to play 9-3 Tesoro (Las Flores) in CIFSS D3 playoffs and had a 27-21 lead at the halftime break. They outscored Tesoro 20-6 in the second half to pull away for the 47-28 victory.

Buchanan (Clovis) 8-3*
The Bears made quick work of the Drillers of Bakersfield 43-7 on Friday in the Central Section D1 playoffs. Buchanan will have its first big test of the postseason next week when it welcomes Liberty (Bakersfield) for the semifinals. The Bears defeated the Patriots 19-17 earlier this season.

Camarillo 11-1
Fell behind 21-14 at the halftime break, but held Downey to only six points in the following two quarters to escape with a 28-27 victory in CIFSS D4 playoffs. Grady Liddell’s interception sealed it.

Carlsbad 10-1
This team will likely be seeing a jump next week, as it handed No. 18 Cathedral Catholic (San Diego) a 21-20 defeat on Friday in the San Diego Section Open Division. Carlsbad was ahead 21-14 and was attempting to run out the clock, when the Lancers fumbled and the Dons used that gift for a touchdown with 1:16 left. The two-point-conversion was foiled to complete the upset. Up next is a final versus No. 8 Helix.

Chaminade (West Hills) 7-5
Defeated No. 22 Upland 28-27 in overtime in CIFSS D2 playoffs. Eagles upset a different higher-ranked Inland Empire team (Norco) in last week’s first round.

Culver City 12-0
The Centaurs remained unbeaten, but Chino Hills gave them an early scare in CIFSS D1 playoffs. The Huskies jumped out to a 21-7 lead, but the Centaurs outscored their foes by a margin of 55-14 to defeat Chino Hills 62-35.

Inderkum (Sacramento) 11-0
Defeated Delta League champion Davis 43-21 in SJS D1 playoffs. Davis also was 10-1. The Tigers will now play Oak Ridge (El Dorado Hills) in semifinals.

Lawndale 8-4*
LOST to No. 17 Grace Brethren (Simi Valley) 38-31 on Friday in CIFSS D3 playoffs. The Cardinals had a chance with a Hail Mary pass at the end of the game but it was intercepted.

Liberty (Bakersfield) 10-1
One of two showdowns is set in the Central Section, as Liberty cruised past Clovis West (Fresno) 38-14 on Friday Central Sec D1 playoffs. Clovis West scored all 14 of its points in the second quarter. Up next is No. 27 Buchanan (Clovis), which handed Liberty its lone loss of the season.

Long Beach Poly (Long Beach) 8-4
The season ends for the Jackrabbits in the CIFSS D2 playoffs as Long Beach Poly wasn’t able to muster a strong offense against the defense of No. 16 Rancho Cucamonga in a 21-7 defeat.

Marin Catholic (Kentfield) 10-1
Defeated Kennedy (Fremont) 52-0 on Saturday in first round of NCS D4 playoffs.

McClymonds (Oakland) 9-0
Didn’t play. Earlier in the week, a forfeit caused the Oakland Section to adjust its playoff bracket, resulting in a bye for the Warriors. They will play the section title game against Skyline of Oakland, which did play this week and defeated Oakland Tech 41-6.

Oak Ridge (El Dorado Hills) 8-2*
Defeated Turlock 24-14 in Sac-Joaquin Section D1 playoffs. The Trojans didn’t even give up a first down until late in the first half, but Turlock charged back from a 14-0 deficit in the third quarter. Oak Ridge responded behind junior QB Dustin Lamson. A 1-yd TD run by Gui Lozada and a 28-yard field goal by Connor Edwards was the only scoring after the 14-14 tie. The Trojans will now host Inderkum (11-0) in next week’s semifinals.

Oaks Christian (Westlake Village) 5-6**
Season complete. CIFSS D2 playoff loss to No. 22 Upland.

Oxnard 10-2
LOST to Aquinas (San Bernardino) 26-21 in CIFSS D5 playoffs action. The Falcons of Aquinas used a fake punt to grab a first down late in the game to run out the clock.

Paramount 11-1
The Pirates advanced to the next round of the CIFSS Division 4 playoffs with a 41-17 win against Roosevelt of Eastvale.

San Clemente 10-2
The Tritons were held scoreless for the first three quarters against No. 23 Rancho Verde on Friday in CIFSS D2 playoffs, but scored 13 points in the fourth quarter to pull off the 13-9 victory. San Clemente will take on Chaminade (West Hills) in the semifinals next week.

St. Augustine (San Diego) 8-3
The season comes to a close for the Saints, as a Sam Stewart pick six for No. 8 Helix (La Mesa) helped the Highlanders advance to the San Diego Section Open Division finals with a 12-7 triumph.

St. Ignatius (San Francisco) 9-2
Wildcats played Archbishop Mitty (San Jose) on Saturday in CCS D1 playoffs and won 28-7.

Wilcox (Santa Clara) 9-2
Defeated Menlo-Atherton (Atherton) 42-35 in overtime Friday in CCS D1 playoffs. It was a rematch of last year’s D1 title (with Open Divisions) that Menlo-Atherton won. There are no Open Divisions this year in the CCS. Both teams also went on to win state titles — M-A in D3-AA and Wilcox in D3-A.

I was going to subscribe, but then I read the recap of the southern section and noticed that you had Bosco’s at 11-0; I believe that they lost to Mater Dei.

Keep up the great work and insights Mark! It’s much appreciated
