State Top 25 Weekend Scoreboard

There’s a chance that when Vista Murrieta with DB Tyreese Shakir and QB Robert Coleman play with team next week vs Norco that both teams are in State Top 25. For recap of team’s win Friday in Sacramento and the difficult trip it took to get there, CLICK HERE. Photo: Mark Tennis.

If next week’s showdown between No. 3 De La Salle and No. 4 Folsom is similar to Friday’s victory by No. 6 Cathedral Catholic of San Diego over No. 5 Corona Centennial, then we’re in for a wild ride. Friday night also was great for the Serra schools with No. 14 Serra of Gardena knocking off No. 8 Calabasas and No. 24 Serra of San Mateo winning big at Levi’s Stadium over No. 25 Menlo-Atherton. On Saturday, we had No. 11 Liberty (Brentwood) survive an upset bid with No. 22 Servite falling in Las Vegas.

Note: Look for a brand new State Top 50 set of football rankings that won’t simply be a list on Monday. We’ll have insights and breakdowns based on more than 40 years of going to Friday night games with an overview of the state’s top teams and what’s coming up that just can’t be matched. It’s more than 8,000 words of jam-packed info. Each new set of rankings will be for Gold Club members only. The late Friday/Weekend Scoreboards will continue to be free posts and will provide snippets of info, comments and more.

4. Folsom 2-0

5. Centennial (Corona) 1-2
LOST at No. 6 Cathedral Catholic of San Diego 44-41. Nick Floyd gave the Huskies leads of 35-34 and 41-37 in the fourth quarter with touchdown runs. They just left too much time for the Dons to get the winning score.

6. Cathedral Catholic (San Diego) 3-0
D.J. Ralph snuck into the end zone with 40 seconds left and the Dons held on to beat No. 5 Centennial (Corona) 44-41. Another huge moment was a 94-yard kickoff return TD by Christian Hall in the third quarter that broke a 28-28 tie.

13. Grace Brethren (Simi Valley) 3-0
There was no let down game for Grace Brethren after stunning Oaks Christian last week, as it dealt with Muir (Pasadena) 38-18. The Lancers also have another first coming up due to Calabasas and Sierra Canyon losses: No. 1 team for Ventura County/San Fernando Valley.

14. Serra (Gardena) 2-0

    HeyMark,
Cathedral Catholic is looking like a Top 5 team this year; maybe even the3rd best team in CA. Is there any scenario in which Cathedral could play MD or Bosco (assuming they win-out)?

None. The only conceivable way would be it MD or SJB each lose 2-3 games in league and fall to D-II… which isn’t remotely likely.

I think it’s time to recognize that Brentwood Liberty is not a top 15 team in the state. Back-to-back close calls against teams that won’t sniff the top 25.

Dropped a couple of spots this week. Most of us who’ve seen Serra and Liberty would pick Serra in a game, but you can’t drop kids a bunch of spots when they continue to win. Liberty still has Monte Vista, Cardinal Newman and Pitt in league. It will all work itself out.
