Wednesday, Jan. 16 (Girls)
Sacramento 54, Christian Brothers (Sacramento) 41

The visiting Dragons, who have played one of the toughest schedules of any team in California, got out to a slow start in this one as they trailed the Falcons 10-7. They slowly pulled away for the rest of the night. Head coach Michele Massari’s team, which made headlines in December with an upset of Etiwanda, one of Southern California’s top-ranked squads, was led by 14 points from UC Santa Barbara-bound Ryanne Walters. Teammate Muirae Gomez added 11 points. The Falcons (13-6), last year’s CIF Sac-Joaquin Section D3 champs, featured 16 points from freshman Chance Sims. Two nights later, Sacramento lost to nationally ranked Centennial of Las Vegas, but on Monday knocked off state No. 15 Heritage of Brentwood 50-48. The Dragons began this week at 15-7.

Friday, Jan. 18 (Boys)
Rocklin 67, Whitney (Rocklin) 59

The home side of the gym last Friday at Whitney was rocking as the Wildcats had a chance to upset their rivals and one of the top-ranked teams in the Sac-Joaquin Section. They were only down 45-43 entering the fourth quarter, but the Thunder made the key baskets down the stretch and avoided the upset with a 67-59 triumph. Rocklin improved to 21-2 and isn’t scheduled to play again until this Friday in another Sierra Foothill League showdown, which will be against Folsom. Whitney fell to 15-8 and will try to break a stretch of three losses in four games on Friday at Del Oro.

Saturday, Jan. 19 (Girls)
Folsom 59, Carondelet (Concord) 47

This game was played as part of the St. Mary’s of Stockton MLK Showcase and it was certainly a showcase for 5-foot-3 dynamo Charity Gallegos of the Bulldogs. The sophomore point guard picked a perfect time, with college coaches watching, to score 23 points in leading Folsom to what would have to be an upset win. One of Folsom’s coaches requested jokingly we list Charity as 5-foot-10, which can’t be done but don’t tell her she can’t do anything that a 5-foot-10 point guard could do. As a team, Folsom (18-3) played its best game of the season in downing a Carondelet squad that was No. 7 in the state coming in (based mostly on the 17-4 Cougars knocking off then state No. 1 Pinewood of Los Altos Hills the previous week). The Cougars, who were led by Washington-bound Ali Bamberger with 21 points, also may have been looking ahead to matchup two days later against state No. 2 Archbishop Mitty of San Jose. Regardless, Folsom posted an impressive win and looked like a definite threat to win the SJS D1 title this year and perhaps end the recent run of titles won in that division by St. Mary’s of Stockton.
