State Top 25 Weekend Scoreboard

Saturday games at the Honor Bowl in Mountain View sees impressive wins by No. 16 Serra of Gardena and No. 19 Liberty of Brentwood. On Friday, No. 1 Mater Dei shows national audience on ESPNU why not much has changed despite all of those gone from last season with a 42-0 road romp over national powerhouse Bishop Gorman of Las Vegas. No. 4 Corona Centennial, meanwhile, gets a comeback win over No. 5 Orange Lutheran. .

1. Mater Dei (Santa Ana) 2-0*
Defeated Bishop Gorman (Las Vegas) 42-0. The host Gaels were looking for revenge after the Monarchs snapped their 55-game win streak last season. The Monarchs were looking to show everyone that their forfeit loss from first game to Bishop Amat (La Puente) was only going to be a blip on their season.

2. St. John Bosco (Bellflower) 2-0
Defeated Garces (Bakersfield) 56-0. Wonder if what MD did to Gorman may have some who were ranking Bosco higher re-think it. For the 100th time, again, it doesn’t matter. Barring a major upset, those two are going to play twice this season.

3. De La Salle (Concord) 2-0
Defeated No. 31 Central Catholic (Modesto) 35-7. The Spartans gave up their first TD of the season on pass play late in the first half and broke open a 21-7 game in the third quarter.

4. Centennial (Corona) 2-0
Defeated No. 5 Orange Lutheran 45-28. The Huskies were down 14-0 and 21-10 and got their ground game going in the second half. With seven minutes left, they also got a 51-yard punt return TD by Gary Bryant Jr. that pushed the score to 38-28.

5. Lutheran (Orange) 1-1
LOST to No. 4 Centennial (Corona) 45-28. Ryan Hilinski had a strong night for the Lancers with two early TD passes to Kyle Ford for a 14-0 lead and then a TD pass to Logan Loya.

6. Oaks Christian (Westlake Village) 2-0
Defeated Edison (Huntington Beach) 38-7. The Lions, who won their first game over state-ranked Chaminade of West Hills, are playing the No. 1 team in Washington next Saturday at the Honor Bowl in San Diego.

7. Mission Viejo 2-0
Defeated No. 12 Santa Margarita (Rancho SM) 30-20. Akili Arnold came up with three interceptions for the Diablos, who also led 20-6 at halftime thanks to Joey Yellen passing for two TDs and 235 yards.

8. JSerra (San Juan Capistrano) 2-0
Defeated No. 17 Calabasas 49-21. It was a long haul up to Coyote Country for the Lions, but they came home after out-classing another top 25 ranked club.

9. Folsom 1-1
Defeated Ho. 15 Jesuit (Carmichael) 51-14. Kaiden Bennett had TD passes to Joe Ngata (twice) and Elihjah Badger as the Bulldogs overcame early 7-0 deficit and took 28-7 lead late in first half. The 51 points comes on the heels of being blanked by De La Salle in the first game.

10. Upland 1-0
Bye. Did not play. Head coach Tim Salter’s squad hosts Redlands East Valley in next game on Thursday.

11. Cajon (San Bernardino) 2-0
Defeated Paloma Valley (Menifee) 48-7. After what the Cowboys did to La Mesa Helix in their first game (43-3), this result was not surprising.

12. Santa Margarita (Rancho SM) 1-1
LOST to No. 7 Mission Viejo 30-20. We’ll see if the tough night the Eagles had against the Diablos will make them better down the road or is a sign they may have a tough time winning a game in the Trinity League.

13. Central (Fresno) 2-0
Defeated Grant (Sacramento) 54-12. The team the Grizzlies beat in their first game, Edison of Fresno (35-7), bounced back to beat Clovis West of Fresno this week.

14. Narbonne (Harbor City) 0-2
LOST to No. 22 Long Beach Poly 26-3. Interception return TDs doomed the Gauchos, who lost their first game 47-7 to nationally ranked St. Louis of Hawaii.

15. Jesuit (Carmichael) 0-1
LOST to No. 9 Folsom 51-14. Well, now all of a sudden, we’re not so sure which is the second-best team in the Sac-Joaquin Section after Folsom. St. Mary’s of Stockton had a rough night on Friday too.

16. Serra (Gardena) 1-0
Defeated No. 29 Serra (San Mateo) 41-22 Saturday at St Francis (Mtn View) in final game of the NorCal portion of the Honor Bowl. The Cavaliers were too talented for the Padres and won in the first-ever matchup of schools named for the same patron saint. Junior QB Doug Brumfield threw four TD passes — two each to Melquan Stovall and Justin Lockhart. Stovall also scored on a 5-yard reverse.

17. Calabasas 0-1
LOST to No. 12 JSerra (San Juan Capistrano) 49-21. It was a hard night for the Coyotes, but another indication that all the pizzazz they have at receiver and other skill positions aren’t enough to get past teams with much better depth.

18. Servite (Anaheim) 2-0
Defeated Norco 37-32. Derek Fuentes ran it in from 14 yards out with 2:34 left for the winning touchdown. Servite also scored 23 straight points to come back from 32-14 hole.

19. Liberty (Brentwood) 2-0
Defeated Gilroy 57-0. It wasn’t pretty watching the Lions dominate the Mustangs in Saturday’s second game at the Honor Bowl held at St. Francis (Mountain View). They had 10 sacks in the first half and led 50-0 just before halftime on four TD passes from junior standout Jay Butterfield.

20. Chaminade (West Hills) 1-1
Defeated Paraclete (Lancaster) 49-3. Head coach Ed Croson’s squad bounced back from 31-14 loss to No. 6 Oaks Christian.

21. St. Francis (Mountain View) 1-0
Defeated Notre Dame (Sherman Oaks) 23-12. Both Opeti Fangupo and Evan Williams had huge nights as the Lancers won in the second of two games played on their home field in the NorCal edition of the Honor Bowl. They have Oak Grove (San Jose) next, which may not be pretty.

22. Long Beach Poly (Long Beach) 2-0
Defeated No. 14 Narbonne (Harbor City) 26-3 at Vets Stadium. From a school with some of the best DBs in state history, Kejuan Markham had one of the top DB performances in LB Poly history with three interception returns.

23. Torrey Pines (San Diego) 2-0
Defeated San Clemente 47-45. The Falcons, also No. 1 in the CIF San Diego Section, had to overcome a monster night by the Tritons’ Brendan Costello. And to do it, they had to recover an onside kick with 43 seconds left and then kick a game-winning field goal at the final horn.

24. Clayton Valley (Concord) 2-0
Defeated Stellar Prep (Hayward) 56-0. Not sure why this game was set up, but an easy win for the Ugly Eagles regardless.

25. Pittsburg 1-1
Defeated St. Mary’s (Stockton) 48-7. The Pirates, No. 9 in the preseason, rebounded from first game upset loss to Clayton Valley and overwhelmed the turnover-plagued Rams.
