State Top 25 Weekend Scoreboard

No. 3 De La Salle extends NorCal (north of Fresno) dominance with impressive 14-0 shutout of high-octane No. 3 Folsom. It was no trouble for No. 1 and No. 2 Mater Dei & St. John Bosco, and No. 5 Centennial posts strong win over nationally ranked out-of-state foe. The biggest upset is preseason No. 9 Pittsburg losing in two overtimes to local rival Clayton Valley of Concord.

Note: Look for a brand new State Top 25 set of football rankings that won’t simply be a list on Monday of next week. We’ll have insights and breakdowns based on more than 40 years of going to Friday night games with an overview of the state’s top teams and what’s coming up that just can’t be matched. Each new set of rankings will be for Gold Club members only. The late Friday/Weekend Scoreboards will be free posts and will provide snippets of info, comments and more.

(Rankings based on preseason State Top 50 released earlier this week on Monday)

(Check our site again later in the weekend for further updates)

1. Mater Dei (Santa Ana) 1-0
Defeated preseason state No. 30 Bishop Amat (La Puente) 42-14. This sets up the Monarchs for their trip next week to play Bishop Gorman in Las Vegas. The Gaels will be looking for payback after having their own mythical national title hopes dashed by Mater Dei.

2. St. John Bosco (Bellflower) 1-0
Defeated Timpview (Provo, Utah) 49-0. Opening up their own on-campus multi-million dollar home stadium, the Braves beat one of the top teams in Utah. A nifty 41-yard TD run by George Holani upped the score to 28-0.

3. De La Salle (Concord) 1-0
Defeated No. 4 Folsom 14-0. In the nearly 40 years since former head coach Bob Ladoucuer began building the DLS program, this was one of the top defensive outings in school history. One of the defensive leaders, Isaiah Foskey, caught a 17-yard TD pass in the third quarter to break a scoreless tie after he got a sack on Folsom’s previous series.

4. Folsom 0-1
LOST to No. 3 De La Salle (Concord) 14-0. Five turnovers cost the Bulldogs, but their defense did a good job forcing numerous punts with a stout performance, especially against the run. They had a 16-game win streak snapped and De La Salle has now gone 291 games since 1991 without losing to a team from north of Fresno.

5. Centennial (Corona) 1-0
Defeated Chandler (Arizona) 35-13. The Huskies beat a team that came into the night nationally ranked. They may play an even stronger foe next week, Orange Lutheran, at Orange Coast College.

6. Lutheran (Orange) 1-0
Defeated San Juan Hills (SJ Capistrano) 27-7. If the Lancers can beat Centennial next week at OCC, then the Trinity League would for certain have the No. 1, No. 2 and No. 3 teams in Southern California.

7. Narbonne (Harbor City) 0-1
LOST to St. Louis (Honolulu) 47-7. Last year’s CIF D1-A state champs got throttled in a late game played in Honolulu. The Gauchos were much closer to the Crusaders last year, too.

8. Oaks Christian (Westlake Village) 1-0
Defeated No. 14 Chaminade (West Hills) 31-13 in game played on Thursday night. Zach Charbonnet went bonkers for the Lions with 186 yards rushing and three TDs.

9. Pittsburg 0-1
LOST to Clayton Valley (Concord) 38-31 in 2 OTs. We like to be as accurate as possible in the rankings, but missed on Clayton Valley being in the preseason Top 50 (or even Top 25). Pitt will now be playing catchup in the NCS for the rest of the season and has Corona Centennial coming up in two weeks.

10. Mission Viejo 1-0
Defeated preseason No. 50 Liberty (Bakersfield) 34-10. Akili Arnold sparked the Diablos with a 95-yard interception return score.

11. Upland 1-0
Defeated preseason No. 49 La Habra 24-12. La Habra entered as a top 10 team from Orange County (where five of the six Trinity League team reside) so this was a good win.

12. JSerra (San Juan Capistrano) 1-0
Defeated No. 24 Corona del Mar (Newport Beach) 49-7. Caden Bell, the QB who was at Servite (Anaheim) last season, was expected to be an impact player for the Lions and he was in this game.

13. Central (Fresno) 1-0
Defeated Edison (Fresno) 35-7. Defending CIF Central Section D1 champs don’t have a very tough schedule, but will have Buchanan and others coming up in league.

14. Chanminade (West Hills) 0-1
LOST to No. 8 Oaks Christian (Westlake Village) 31-13. This was a reversal of last year when the Eagles handily beat the Lions.

15. Cajon (San Bernardino) 1-0
Defeated preseason No. 23 Helix (La Mesa) 43-3. Some questions about the Cowboys based on their 38-14 loss to Serra of San Mateo in D2-AA bowl game was answered with this outing. They can play some defense to go with that offense.

16. Jesuit (Carmichael) 0-0
Bye. Did not play. The Marauders open next week and will be facing a likely ticked off group from Folsom, which will be coming off a shutout loss to De La Salle.

17. Serra (Gardena) 0-0
Bye. Did not play. The Cavs are opening their season next Saturday at this year’s NorCal Honor Bowl, which will be played at St. Francis of Mountain View and their opponent will be Serra of San Mateo. Serra vs. Serra should be a lot of fun.

18. Madison (San Diego) 1-0
Defeated Rancho Bernardo (San Diego 19-15. This was our preseason ranking, but we ended up being almost on an island picking the War Hawks this high. This four-point win was okay, but look for La Costa Canyon (which beat Cathedral Catholic on Friday 19-7) to possibly be No. 1 in San Diego next week. That’s also because defending Open Division champ Helix lost so badly to Cajon.

19. Calabasas 0-0
Bye. Did not play. The Coyotes are stepping up in the debut of head coach Chris Claiborne by playing JSerra of the Trinity League in their first game next Friday.

20. Liberty (Brentwood) 1-0
Defeated Vacaville 35-10. The Lions lost to the Bulldogs in this game last year 52-42. Should they now move up to No. 2 in the NCS behind De La Salle or should Clayton Valley rocket up to that spot after knocking off Pitt?

21. St. Francis (Mountain View) 0-0
Bye. Did not play. The Lancers start their season next Friday at home vs. Notre Dame of Sherman Oaks. It will be part of the NorCal portion of the Honor Bowl.

22. Long Beach Poly (Long Beach) 1-0
Defeated Dorsey (Los Angeles) 37-8. It’s the first win for new Jackrabbits’ head coach Stephen Barbee. They’ll have a tougher test next week vs. Narbonne.

23. Helix (La Mesa) 0-1
LOST to No. 15 Cajon (San Bernardino) 43-3. Ouch, that’s a bad loss for the Scotties, who were a fairly strong preseason No. 1 according to the media poll conducted by the San Diego Union-Tribune.

24. Corona del Mar (Newport Beach) 0-1
LOST to No. 12 JSerra (SJ Capistrano) 49-7. It would have been an upset if the Sea Kings had won, but the Lions were overpowering and showed yet again the massive gap between the Trinity League and just about every other team in Southern California (other than Corona Centennial and this year perhaps Oaks Christian).

25. Santa Margarita (Rancho SM) 1-0
Defeated Downey 59-21. They are scrambling into the archives at Santa Margarita to compare the sophomore debut of QB Peter Castelli with all others at the school, including some kid the Eagles once had named Carson Palmer.

I’ll start my annual rant of wanting both a Public and Private Open Bowl games instead of just one and its chosen instead of having to win SSD1 which a public school won’t win for another decade.

Private Open -DLS vs. SJB or MD

Public Open – Folsom vs. MV or Centennial

Tell me that would not be great for the sport and communities…???

Great idea to put out there.
It was only three seasons ago (2015) when it was Centennial vs. DLS in Open, though. What would happen then? They both maybe would have won Private & Public Open titles and then we’d have a giant argument about which team should be No. 1 overall in the state.

I think you both have very valid points. Maybe it’s just me, but it seems the yearly transfers in/transfers out are out of control and happening at many of the public schools, as much as the privates. Why not have a separate private and public championship in every division BUT the Open. If the two best teams are deemed to be private and/or public, then they play in the Open finale. Hence the name “Open.”

True Mark, but I don’t see a version anymore with current SSD1 where Centennial, Mission Viejo, LBPoly or a any public beating MD or SJB in near future which will deprive state bowl fans of either of those teams (Cent. and MV) for many years to come.
