FB: State Record Updates (Part 1)

Also as part of our preseason football operations, we are doing a deep dive on updating the state record lists currently on our site and adding others. For part one of this series, we have longest winning streaks, longest league winning streaks, longest losing streaks and team scoring. One school that should be having a huge celebration if it scores in its first seven games of this season is Los Alamitos because the Griffins only need seven by our count to extend their unbelievable state record of not getting shut out to 400 games. It’s a streak that has been ongoing now for more than 30 years.

There are no schools starting the 2018 California prep football season that are on the list for teams with the longest winning streaks in state history. McClymonds of Oakland has the longest current win streak at 25 games after capturing last year’s CIF Division 4A state title, going 14-0 and winning its second straight CIF state crown. The Warriors are followed on the active list only by two teams that were 16-0, Strathmore and Folsom, and 15-0 Mater Dei of Santa Ana, which is going to start the 2018 season No. 1 overall in the state after winning the CIF Open Division state championship.

One team that Mater Dei defeated on its way to the CIF Southern Section and state titles, Mission Viejo, will be looking to extend its current regular season winning streak from 38 games. The Diablos set the all-time CIFSS regular season win streak record with a total of 57 games from 2000 to 2006. Their current streak is in the top 15 on the all-time state list.

For longest league win streaks, St. Mary’s of Stockton is expected to keep it rolling this season. The Rams haven’t lost a league game since 2006 and have a current league win streak of 55 games. They should move up to No. 3 among schools in NorCal history with another perfect trip in their league.

When we updated the list of teams with the longest current losing streaks before last season, it was pointed out that Elsie Allen of Santa Rosa was starting out with a streak that already was long enough (36 games) to be among the longest in state history. The Lobos promptly went out and won their first game over St. Vincent de Paul of Petaluma and snapped their streak.

We hope the same thing happens this season for Roybal of Los Angeles, Mark Keppel of Alhambra and Western Christian of Upland. Those three teams currently have the three longest losing streaks in California prep football and all three also are past the cutoff line (0-30) to get a listing in the records. All three have been winless for 2015, 2016 and 2017, but Keppel has one 0-9 season instead of 0-10 while Western Christian’s win in the 2014 season was much later than the other two. Officially, we have Roybal at 0-35, Keppel at 0-34 and Western Christian at 0-31.

The state record for longest losing streak is 49 games (not including a default win and a forfeit win) set in 2008 by Ganesha of Pomona. Roybal could get close to the CIF L.A. City Section record of 42 set in 2004 by Hollywood.

Other schools with long current losing streaks but which are not yet on the all-time state list are Clovis East of Clovis (0-26), Centennial of Compton (0-24) and Bella Vista of Fair Oaks (0-24).

Two teams that were 0-10 last season but still participated in their expanded, competitive-equity driven section playoffs and then lost again to finish 0-11 were Bonita Vista of Chula Vista in the CIF San Diego Section and Hawkins of Los Angeles in the CIF L.A. City Section. Those two thus tied a record for worst win-loss record by a team in state history.

Team scoring records are getting to be a bit silly with so many more teams now getting to play 15 and 16 games and with so many more teams going to high-scoring spread offenses.

Still, there were some impressive totals turned in during the 2017 season.

Centennial of Corona only had nine games in its regular season, but still scored 531 points for a 59.0 per game average, which is the ninth-best in California history. The Huskies also averaged 56.4 points overall, but the lower total of games limited their points total.

Mythical national champion Mater Dei actually had higher scoring totals from the year before, but the Monarchs played a tougher schedule in 2017 and their scoring differential of 495 points against that schedule was another indication of how special they were. McClymonds also had a scoring differential that made the record book at 513 points.

With national record breaker Kazmeir Allen leading the way, Tulare piled up 773 points in 14 games (55.2 average) and had 578 in 10 regular season games (57.8 average) and has been inserted into the record book in several places.

Other teams last season that scored 700 points or more were Folsom, Strathmore, Aquinas of San Bernardino and Mater Dei.

For scoring records, though, special mention should go out to Los Alamitos. The Griffins went another season without getting shut out (11 games, 7-4 record) and have now stretched their ongoing state record to 393 games. It’s a streak that began in 1987 and for some perspective that’s now nearly 50 games longer than the second-longest in state history and it’s more than 100 longer than the next longest current streaks that are ongoing at Mission Viejo and Corona Centennial. If head coach Ray Fenton’s club gets it to 400 this season (which by our count would be in the seventh game), that’s deserving of a celebration. Former head coach John Barnes, who led the program during almost all of the years of the streak, should be there to take a bow.

For team scoring were you looking at just 2017? I know folsom was at 915 3rd in national history) – 161 in 2014 or 57 vs 10 on avg…is that pt dif a state record?

I wonder if folsom 2018 can match at least the 915 this year?

For what I was writing in this particular post, yes I was only referring to 2017 updates. Folsom 2014 is listed as state record holders for point differential.
