All-State Baseball: Medium, Small

Parker Cosby of Escalon (left) is one of the catchers for small schools. He’s already been named as the Modesto Bee Player of the Year after hitting .442 and going 10-0 on the mound. Kobby Lopez of Imperial (right) is one of the pitchers for medium schools. He went 11-1 with a 0.30 ERA and this week decided not to sign with the Toronto Blue Jays (21st round pick) to honor a commitment to his mother to go to San Diego State (signing above). The 37th annual Cal-Hi Sports All-State Baseball Teams get going with these players named from schools that were in CIF section playoffs during the 2018 season that made them medium or small school in class. Pitchers with multiple no-hitters, ridiculously low ERAs and three with long scoreless innings streaks headline the medium schools squads. For small schools, 30-1 Winters cashes in with four honorees.

ALL PLAYERS LISTED BELOW AND THEIR FAMILIES WILL BE ABLE TO ORDER A SOUVENIR PATCH TO COMMEMORATE THEIR ALL-STATE SELECTION. IT COMES WITH A CERTIFICATE AND HAS BEEN DESIGNED BY OUR PARTNERS AT BILLYTEES.COM TO BE PLACED ON LETTERMEN JACKETS. THE BASEBALL PATCH CAN NOW BE ORDERED. CLICK HERE.

One player who is a new state record holder and the player who may break that record in his first game next season are both listed right next to each other on this year’s Cal-Hi Sports Medium Schools All-State First Team. For small schools, the story is about D4 State Team of the Year Winters, which placed three on the first team and one on the second.

The record in question, according to our own Cal-Hi Sports state records, is for consecutive innings pitched without allowing a run. Dawson Netz from Maranatha of Pasadena is being credited with the new record of 59 1/3 innings since it is known that the previous record holder, Jerry Jordan of Avenal in 1970, ended his senior season at 59 innings exactly. Max Nyrop of Alameda, however, ended this season with a 55-inning scoreless streak. Both Nyrop and Netz are juniors and are listed on the All-State Medium Schools first team, but Netz’s streak has ended. Nyrop could conceivably break the record with six scoreless innings to start the 2019 season.

Both players also were not alone from their teams in gaining all-state honors. Maranatha, the No. 1 team in the final D3 state rankings, also had junior shortstop Max Blessenger selected. Alameda, the No. 1 team in the final D2 state rankings, also had senior Bryan Woo named.

Other schools to land more than one player on the two medium schools all-state teams are Beckman of Irvine, San Joaquin Memorial of Fresno, McClatchy of Sacramento and Del Campo of Fair Oaks.

D4 State Team of the Year Winters (30-1) did even better than that for the two small schools squads. The Warriors placed three on first team, led by CIF Northern Section MVP Sammy Gonzalez (an infielder), who was joined by junior Daniel Carrion (infield) and Anthony Carrion (outfield). Sophomore pitcher Brandon Gomez was the fourth from Winters selected as he earned a slot on second team.

Other schools to land more than one player on the two small schools all-state teams are Soledad, Sierra Pacific of Hanford, Capital Christian of Sacramento and Pasadena Poly.

Note: Other than a few exceptions, schools that were eligible to be in the Cal-Hi Sports Division IV or Division V state rankings are considered small and those that were in Division II and Division III are medium. In the CIFSS playoffs, D1 is large, D2, D3 and D4 are medium, D5 is mixed with some in medium and some in small, D6 and D7 are small. Also, some schools with large enrollments in lower playoff divisions are too big to be small schools. There also are mixed teams from the CIF Central Coast Section in its D1 (some medium, some large). There is no all-state large schools team, but there is a third team added to the overall teams in which only players from large schools are eligible.

Here are the 2018 Cal-Hi Sports All-State Baseball Teams for medium schools and small schools:

With 14 homers (25 for his career), Charlie Rocca led Verdugo Hills to its first-ever CIF L.A. City Section title, which came in Division I. He already has been named to exclusive L.A. Times’ all-star squad. Photo: Courtesy School.

I could not agree more Sorena. These talented players have worked very hard and dedicated themselves to this great sport to achieve an honor like this. And thank you Mark Tennis and all of the Cal-Hi staff who oubviously have spent many, many hours applying the due diligence as well as the passion it certainly takes to comprise these teams. Not only do we all enjoy seeing who was named, the pride and feeling of accomplishment the players and their friends and family receive from seeing their Son and/or Daughter make on of the All-State teams! The names on the past teams show the level of accuracy the Cal-Hi staff has had in putting the very best players on these teams, not only in Baseball/Softball but in the other sports as well. Not an easy task to say the least . Thanks again Mark and staff for all of the effort it takes to keep it all going. I also realize to keep this publication thriving showing support by subscribing to the Gold Membership is critical. So much interesting content with the Gold Memborship. If you can please do, it is well worth it

Surprised not to see any kids names from Monrovia High School. MHS went all the way to the CIF finals but not one kid listed for all state?? What are the qualifications to make it on to your list?

We do try to get top players from top teams onto as many teams as possible, but there are a lot of CIF sections and a lot of divisions throughout the state so it’s hard to get one from every finalist. We look at many factors to choose players, including key stats, strength of schedule played, honors already achieved and more.
