State Top 25 Weekend Scoreboard

This week’s scoreboard comes to you from Madera, where we had to be on Friday night after being involved in an accident on Highway 99 on our way to Tulare. Don’t have any bumps or bruises, but car likely totaled. So, switching gears, were there any top teams on Friday that had their paths disrupted similarly? None at the top, but a bunch on the bubble.

Note: Look for a brand new State Top 50 set of football rankings that won’t simply be a list on Tuesday morning this week. We’ll be delayed to get out our preseason State Top 35 girls basketball rankings on Monday morning. We’ll have insights and breakdowns based on more than 40 years of going to Friday night games with an overview of the state’s top teams and what’s coming up that just can’t be matched. Each new set of rankings will be for Gold Club members only. 1. Mater Dei (Santa Ana) 12-0
Defeated No. 11 Long Beach Poly (Long Beach) 55-13. With the defense holding the Jackrabbits to just 59 yards rushing, the offense got too many chances and that’s no way to beat the Monarchs. QB JT Daniels passed for 299 yards and three TDs and ran for 42 yards and two more scores. Mater Dei will now play No. 4 Mission Viejo in next week’s CIF Southern Section D1 semifinals.

2. St. John Bosco (Bellflower) 10-2
Defeated No. 8 Rancho Cucamonga 55-28. In their first two CIFSS D1 playoff games, the Braves have teased their followers on Twitter by letting the opponent get somewhat close in the middle part of the game before blowing it open at the end. Still, they’re in good shape entering the CIFSS D1 semifinals next week against No. 3 Corona Centennial.

3. Centennial (Corona) 10-1
Defeated No. 13 Murrieta Valley (Murrieta) 77-34. According to Eric-Paul Johnson of the Riverside Press-Enterprise, the Huskies racked up 603 yards rushing to blow past the Nighthawks. The bad news was that QB Tanner McKee had to leave the game with a concussion. That almost certainly sidelines him for next week against St. John Bosco.

4. Mission Viejo 12-0
Defeated No. 16 Lutheran (Orange) 48-35. Akili Arnold hadn’t had a 200-yard game rushing this season so he picked a great time indeed to go for 313 yards and five TDs in this CIFSS D1 quarterfinal. Mission will now play its third straight Trinity League team in the playoffs in the semifinals and this time it will be No. 1 Mater Dei.

5. De La Salle (Concord) 10-1
Defeated Clayton Valley (Concord) 45-7. The Spartans scored on their first two offensive plays and had no trouble in CIF North Coast Section Open Division. They’ve basically clinched a spot in the CIF bowls because the champion and runner-up in that division gets onto the NorCal board. Pittsburg won in the other semifinal played Saturday.

6. Folsom 12-0
Defeated Tracy 56-21. Kaiden Bennett threw for five more TDs and Joe Ngata caught three more TD passes as the Bulldogs jumped to a 28-0 lead in the first quarter against their Bulldog counterparts in the CIF Sac-Joaquin Section D1 quarterfinals. Folsom is playing the winner of Saturday’s game between Jesuit of Carmichael and Vacaville in the semifinals.

7. Upland 12-0
Defeated Cathedral (Los Angeles) 59-20. Devin Chandler’s 80-yard kickoff return TD just before halftime and just after Cathedral scored to make it 17-12 was a back breaker. The Highlanders advanced to the CIFSS D2 semifinals where they will play No. 24 Oaks Christian.

8. Rancho Cucamonga 10-2
LOST to No. 2 St. John Bosco (Bellflower) 55-28. Losing to Upland and to the Braves will have to do for the Cougars, who end their season in the CIFSS D1 quarterfinals.

9. Mission Hills (San Marcos) 11-0
Defeated Grossmont (La Mesa) 52-42. The top seed in the CIF San Diego Section Open Division had some trouble with the No. 8 Foothillers. Uh, oh. Second-seeded Helix beat that same team 57-3 a few weeks ago.

10. Central (Fresno) 10-1
Defeated Bullard (Fresno) 35-7. Head coach Kyle Biggs’ team advanced to CIF Central Section D1 semis where it will play perennial power Bakersfield next week. The team’s only loss of 45-30 to De La Salle keeps looking better and better.

11. Long Beach Poly (Long Beach) 9-3
LOST to No. 1 Mater Dei (Santa Ana) 55-13. The Jackrabbits scored 60 in their previous game vs. JSerra, but this Monarch defense is just about as loaded as the offense.

12. San Clemente 9-2
Did not play. Season complete. The Tritons, who have a head-to-head win over Murrieta Valley, saw their season end last week in 28-10 loss to Rancho Cucamonga.

13. Murrieta Valley (Murrieta) 9-3
LOST to No. 3 Centennial (Corona) 77-34. QB Hank Bachmeier and WR Marquis Spiker both were sidelined by injuries at different points in the game, but the Nighthawks just could stop Centennial’s ground game. The only good news is that it’s very likely Spiker’s state career TD catch record is going to hold up because a player who wasn’t that far behind, Mozes Mooney of La Jolla Bishop’s, is on a team that also lost on Friday night. No more games for Mooney, either. We’ll figure out final totals for both players later in the weekend and will update the Gold Club member state record files.

14. Santa Margarita (Rancho SM) 7-4
Did not play. Season complete. The Eagles lost to No. 13 Murrieta Valley 59-56 in last week’s CIFSS D1 quarterfinals. Their other three losses were to Mater Dei, St. John Bosco and Mission Viejo.

15. JSerra (San Juan Capistrano) 7-4
Did not play. Season complete. The Lions lost to No. 11 Long Beach Poly 60-44 in last week’s CIFSS D1 quarterfinals. Their other three losses were to Mater Dei, St. John Bosco and Santa Margarita.

16. Lutheran (Orange) 6-6
LOST to No. 4 Mission Viejo 48-35. After trailing 21-6, the Lancers fought back to a 35-35 tie. With an effort like that, even with six losses, it’ll be hard to drop them at all next week. Plus, their earlier win over Heritage of Menifee is gaining strength.

17. Chaminade (West Hills) 9-2
Did not play. Season complete. The Eagles lost to Orange Lutheran in last week’s CIFSS D1 playoffs 28-25. Now, we’ll have to check out scores to see if it’s possible to move them back in front of OLu due to overall season performances.

18. Pittsburg 8-1
Defeated San Ramon Valley (Danville) 16-7 on Saturday. The Pirates clinched NorCal bowl berth with this win in CIF North Coast Section Open Division semifinals and will now play No. 5 De La Salle in the final in two weeks. SRV was 9-0 until it played DLS on final week of regular season.

19. Narbonne (Harbor City) 8-3
Defeated San Pedro 34-14. This was the first week of the eight-team L.A. City Open Division playoffs. The top-seeded Gauchos will now play Fairfax in the semifinals.

20. Oak Ridge (El Dorado Hills) 11-1
Defeated Gregori (Modesto) 49-14. The visiting Jaguars were 11-0 but were no match for the Trojans in SJS D1 quarterfinals. Oak Ridge now plays defending champion St. Mary’s (Stockton) in next week’s semis.

21. Oakdale 11-1
Defeated Vanden (Fairfield) 41-16. Team with a win over Central Catholic and only loss to Folsom rolled into CIF Sac-Joaquin Section D3 semifinals opposite 11-1 Patterson.

22. Servite (Anaheim) 6-5
Did not play. Season complete. The Friars, who had a win over Orange Lutheran in the Trinity League, lost in last week’s CIFSS D1 playoffs 38-36 to Mission Viejo.

23. Oaks Christian (Westlake Village) 10-2
Defeated Edison (Huntington Beach) 42-14. It was 24-19 earlier in the season when the Lions beat the Chargers, which shows you how strong they are playing now. State No. 7 Upland will be up next.

24. Paraclete (Lancaster) 10-1*
Defeated St. Joseph (Santa Maria) 55-30. The Spirits, who have lost only to Oaks Christian, advanced to the CIFSS D5 semifinals. Second seed and unbeaten Lawndale lost to Moorpark 24-22.

25. Helix (La Mesa) 10-1
Defeated Madison (San Diego) 19-11. The Scotties, who have lost only to Paraclete, ended the season of last year’s CIF Division 2-AA state champions in San Diego Section Open Division playoffs. The No. 2 seed meets No. 3 San Marcos next.
