No. 2 Corona Centennial falls to national power IMG Academy (Florida) on Saturday in Honor Bowl finale. On Friday, No. 1 Mater Dei ends 55-game win streak of Las Vegas Bishop Gorman, No. 4 De La Salle rallies from 31-14 deficit in second half to beat Washington D.C. St. John’s and No. 8 Long Beach Poly beats No. 6 Narbonne. Biggest upsets are No. 17 Edison (Huntington Beach) falling to Oaks Christian and No. 23 St. Augustine of San Diego dropping one to Carlsbad.

(Rankings based on last week’s State Top 50 released last Monday)
(Through reported results of Saturday night, Sept. 2)

1. Mater Dei (Santa Ana) 2-0
Defeated Bishop Gorman (Las Vegas) 35-21 at Santa Ana Bowl in matchup of No. 1 and No. 2 teams according to several national rankngs. Bishop Gorman also had 55-game win streak snapped in era when top national powers tend to play each other in showcase events. J.T. Daniels had two TD passes to Nikko Remigio to lead offense while an interception return for a TD by sophomore Dorian Green led the defense.

2. Centennial (Corona) 1-1
LOST to nationally ranked IMG Academy of Florida 40-20 in final game of the Honor Bowl series in San Diego. The Huskies led early 10-3 but then lost All-American candidate QB Tanner McKee to an ankle injury and a few minutes later back-up Ala Mikaele suffered an apparent neck injury. Still, third QB Arturo Herrera and the Centennial defense kept the team close until the final minutes.

3. St. John Bosco (Bellflower) 1-1
Defeated Garces (Bakersfield) 63-0 Saturday at Brothers in Arms Classic at Mission Viejo. Not sure why this game was scheduled. It would be as if Bosco was playing Aquinas of San Bernardino or Notre Dame of Riverside. Still, the Braves did what they had to do and play state-ranked Chaminade next.

4. De La Salle (Concord) 2-0
Defeated St. John’s (Washington DC) 35-31 in nationally televised game at Owen Owens Field in Concord (where it reached 112 degrees earlier in the day). DLS trailed 31-14 early in the third quarter, but got its offense going behind the ball fakes and running by junior QB Erich Storti out of the veer. The defense also got plenty of stops. Junior RB George King scored on a 11-yard run to cut the lead to 31-28 and then in the fourth quarter Storti carried one in himself for the winning score. King then had an interception to stop St. John’s final drive.

5. Mission Viejo 2-0
Defeated No.33 Vista Murrieta (Murrieta) 41-7 in game two of a doubleheader that got the two-day Brother in Arms Classic underway at Mission Viejo. Joey Yellen continued to look strong at QB while Christian Lavalle scored on an interception return.

6. Narbonne (Harbor City) 1-1
LOST to No. 9 Long Beach Poly 14-10 at El Camino College. It was similar to last week’s game vs. No. 13 Serra (Gardena) but this time the other team made the key plays at the end.

7. Chaminade (West Hills) 2-0
Defeated Mountain Pointe (Phoenix, Ariz.) 39-25 in game played on Thursday. We’re about the only ones with the Eagles ahead of LB Poly and that will stay for another week at least. The team Chaminade beat 47-10 in its first game, Oaks Christian, knocked off No. 17 Edison of Huntington Beach on Friday.

8. Long Beach Poly (Long Beach) 2-0
Defeated No. 6 Narbonne (Harbor City) 14-10 at El Camino College. Matt Corral passed for 213 yards and two TDs. The Jackrabbits have a bye next week, then get No. 5 Mission Viejo. After that, they may be No. 4 or No. 5 in our state rankings but not before we see how they do.

9. Rancho Cucamonga 2-0
Defeated No. 43 Norco 28-21. Nick Acosta threw a pair of TD passes in another strong outing. The lights going out at Norco with less than a minute left and the game very much not decided also was a big aspect to what happened in this game.

10. Helix (La Mesa) 1-1
LOST to No. 32 Paraclete (Lancaster) 23-6 on Saturday at Honor Bowl. The Highlanders’ defense kept them in a 0-0 tie into the second half, but Paraclete pulled away. It was the end of a bad weekend for top-ranked San Diego Section teams playing CIF Southern Section opponents.

11. St. Mary’s (Stockton) 2-0
Defeated Cardinal Newman (Santa Rosa) 48-34 at Santa Rosa. The bigger news of the week for the Rams, though, was the revelation that promising soph QB Noah May will have to miss the rest of the season with a torn labrum in his shoulder.

12. Calabasas 2-0
Defeated Salesian (Los Angeles) 45-14. All-American junior Mycah Pittman got the night going well by returning the opening kickoff for a touchdown.

13. Serra (Gardena) 0-2
LOST to Punahou (Hawaii) 56-42 Saturday in Honor Bowl held at Cathedral Catholic (San Diego). The Cavs were trying to tie up at 49-49 or take a 50-49 lead in the final minutes when they gave up a 99-yard interception return the other way by Punahou’s Stephen Barber. Their other loss was 17-14 to Narbonne.

14. Folsom 2-0
Defeated Jesuit (Carmichael) 55-9 in matchup of the Sac Bee’s No. 1 and No. 3 teams. Kaiden Bennett threw for six TDs and ran for another. Jesuit had been planning to host rare early Friday afternoon game at its home stadium, but severe heat forced it to be back at Folsom. Jesuit being the home team at Folsom just added a more bizarre feeling to the lopsided festivities.

15. Oak Ridge (El Dorado Hills) 2-0
Defeated Vacaville 24-23. A missed extra point doomed Vacaville. The Trojans didn’t have much trouble with the Bulldogs last year, but not this time. We’ll just have to see if Vaca is much improved or Oak Ridge may be overrated.

16. St. Francis (Mountain View) 2-0
Defeated Palma (Salinas) 40-6. That’s two easy wins in a row for the Lancers (their first was 35-0 vs. Oak Grove), who play at No. 4 De La Salle next week.

17. Edison (Huntington Beach) 2-0
LOST to Oaks Christian (Westlake Village) 24-19. The opponents bounced back from a bad loss to No. 7 Chaminade. Jack Morrell kicked four field goals to keep the Chargers in it and they got a late interception to give them one last chance. This time, though, no last-second victory.

18. San Clemente 2-0
Defeated Huntington Beach 62-20. Explosive night for the Tritons’ offense, who should score a lot of points again next week at Fullerton.

19. Valencia 1-0
Defeated Palmdale 49-9. First game for the Vikings featured three TDs by standout Moises Haynes.

20. Del Oro (Loomis) 1-1
LOST to Timpview (Provo, Utah) 30-13 on Saturday at Brothers in Arms Classic at Mission Viejo. The Golden Eagles’ ranking also will be impacted by Cathedral Catholic (team they beat in opener 22-12) getting blanked 37-0 by Orange Lutheran.

21. Bakersfield 1-1
LOST to Orem (Utah) 63-28 Saturday at Brothers in Arms Classic (Mission Viejo). This is a bad loss for the Drillers. Orem had a tougher time at home last week against small school Sutter of California (34-18) than Bakersfield. Have to move Central of Fresno to No. 1 in Central Section next week.

22. Cathedral Catholic (San Diego) 0-2
LOST to Lutheran (Orange) 37-0 in game that was part of Honor Bowl. Not much to say other than it does now look like there’s a lot of rebuilding to do after last season.

23. St. Augustine (San Diego) 1-1
LOST to Carlsbad 22-14. Saints won’t move up next week with rivals losing. Instead, both will drop far. Mission Hills (San Marcos) already was getting almost all No. 2 votes behind Helix in SD Section so look for that team (beat Desert Hills of Utah Friday) to go way up.

24. San Ramon Valley (Danville) 1-0
Did not play on Friday. Wolves, who opened up last week with 27-7 win at Tracy, had a bye. They start league play next week.

25. Lutheran (Orange) 2-0
Defeated No. 22 Cathedral Catholic (San Diego) 37-0 at Honor Bowl. We thought there was a chance the Lancers might win big so we’re glad we had them in the Top 25. Ryan Hilinski’s TD passes to Kyle Ford and Logan Loya helped OLu build a 21-0 halftime lead.

How can you beat a team and that team is still ahead of you in the rankings?

These aren’t new rankings. I think you’re confused. Those are coming out later today. These are scores of how last week’s ranked teams fared.

Although I didn’t didn’t rank them in my preseason Calif. Top 50, I stated at the time to keep an eye out for Paraclete. Since SS has them only in D5, even a section-division championship would fail to keep the Spirits from a higher CIF division(2AA or up) unless the Spirits could beat 2 of the 3 “strong” teams on their schedule: Helix, Oaks Christian, and Sierra Canyon (actually, Sierra Cnyn isCIF not scheduled, but there’ s little likelihood the Spirits and Pioneers won’t meet for the Gold Coast crown Week 10). The Highlanders were Paraclete’s 1st big hurdle, which should make a big difference in their CIF division placement.
By the way, you were right on about Oaks and Edison.

The CIFSS is very protective of its competitive equity playoff divisions and was reluctant even last year to move up Calabasas (D5) even one spot in the bowl game pecking order. Unless Paraclete has a head-to-head win over one of the higher CIFSS eventual division champions, I still think it will be lower than D2 and D3 and possibly just one spot higher than D4. The key will be how Helix does in SD Open. If Helix were still to win it, then the SD Open would just be very low on the SoCal board compared to last year with CC.
