All-State Baseball: Medium, Small

Two first team all-state picks are Trevor Simonian (left) of Malibu (small schools) and Tim Tague (right) of Orinda Miramonte (medium). Simonian will play next at the University of Pennsylvania (yes, he’s an Ivy Leaguer). Tague went 11-0 for Miramonte and also was known in his prep career as an outstanding quarterback. As mentioned with the All-State Underclass teams, we’re going to go back-and-forth between softball and baseball to complete those postseason honors this summer. That means it’s now time to announce those players in baseball from schools that were in CIF section playoffs during the 2017 season that made them medium or small school in class. Seven years ago, Linden’s Aaron Judge was selected to the small schools first team. Who’s on it now? This is the 36th straight year in which Cal-Hi Sports has produced all-state baseball teams.

Note: We hope you enjoy this free post. We will have an Inside the All-State Team post coming soon listing additional freshmen and sophomore players who just missed the All-State Underclass teams but can be considered all-state for their classes. Second team and third team overall for All-State Baseball also will be Gold Club, but first team elite will be free. Some of our upcoming preseason football content also will be for Gold Club members only. Join our team today by CLICKING HERE.

Mythical state champions San Marcos (Division 2), Christian Brothers of Sacramento (D3), Wasco (D4) and Winters (D5) all placed two players each on the first team of this year’s Cal-Hi Sports All-State Medium & Small Schools All-State Baseball Teams.

Not all Division 2 state-ranked teams are considered medium schools, but San Marcos was not in the CIF San Diego Section Open Division or Division I playoffs. The Knights did win it all in the section D2 playoffs and are represented on the All-State Medium Schools first team by infielders Jacob Blas and Zack Prajzner.

Christian Brothers won the CIF Sac-Joaquin Section D3 title and ended 29-2 overall. The Falcons, who also are in the medium schools category, landed both catcher Diego Black and pitcher Tanner Cunha on All-State Medium Schools first team.

In the small schools category, Wasco and Winters were joined as having two first-team all-staters by Capital Christian of Sacramento (which was No. 2 in the final D4 state rankings behind Wasco). Wasco’s duo is pitcher-hitter Lalo Barraza and catcher Esteban Rios. Winters checks in with infielder Greg Creamer (who was second team all-state last season) and pitcher Anthony Carrion. Capital Christian, which isn’t going to be considered in the small schools ranks next season when it moves up in class in its section, has pitcher Tyler Pons and super sophomore outfielder/pitcher Xavier Carter.

Note: Other than a few exceptions, schools that were eligible to be in the Cal-Hi Sports Division IV or Division V state rankings are considered small and those that were in Division III are medium. In the CIFSS playoffs, D1 and D2 are large, D3 is medium and D4 & D5 are mixed with some in medium and some in small, D6 and D7 are small. There also are mixed teams from the CIF Central Coast Section in its D1 (some medium, some large) and for CIF Sac-Joaquin D4 (some small, some medium). There is no all-state large schools team, but there is a third team added to the overall teams in which only players from large schools are eligible.

Here are the 2017 Cal-Hi Sports All-State Baseball Teams for medium schools and small schools:

    Mark,

Thanks for the article. Under Second Team pitcher Medium Schools in the photo of Ryan Ward you have him listed as Mark Ward. Just FYI

      That was fixed as well.

    Hello Mark,

Manteca 1st team outfielder Joel Olmos’ name is misspelled. He is listed as Joel Osmos.

Leaving Wyatt Gilbert(Tulare Western) off this team is inexcusable.

Dixon from Tahquitz should have his first name spelled Brendan and Farmer from Tahquitz is an INF (SS) not an OF.

Dixon mistake fixed. Doing the other one only leaves two outfielders, however, and we’d then have to make additional changes since there has to be three listed. We’ll have to live with that one. You’d be amazed how many nominations we get that don’t list a position and then on MaxPreps rosters it’s often OF/INF or similar. Even some newspaper all-area teams these days don’t list positions. That’s why it’s easy to get them mixed up.
