Fourteen is the magic number for top receivers Grant Calcaterra of Santa Margarita, Xavier Marshall of Corona Centennial and Tyson Fraser of Clovis. Rancho Cotate junior Jaelen Ward, however, caught 15 and his quarterback, junior Jake Simmons, passed for 562 yards. The only problem is that Rancho Cotate lost to Analy of Sebastopol.

Note: We will collect totals from MaxPreps, newspapers, tweets and from those sent in to us. We also will compile single-game highs from this post throughout the season and of course we use our weekly State Stat Stars collection as an aid for the Cal-Hi Sports State Record Book. That is the only state record book anyone has ever done and we have published it seven times with full copyright protection. Andrew Almazan (Chino)
After getting bottled up for just 69 yards rushing in a season-opening loss to Damien of La Verne, Almazan broke out for 327 yards on 22 carries and scored three times in a 50-22 victory against Baldwin Park.

Grant Calcaterra & Richard Wagner (Santa Margarita, Rancho SM)
In the Eagles’ 37-7 win over Loyola of Los Angeles, they bounced back from a loss to Mission Viejo thanks to huge totals from their WR-QB combo. Calcaterra, recruited as a tight end and committed to Oklahoma, tied a school record with three TDs catches but even more impressively had 14 catches for 292 yards. Wagner was reported a 11-for-11 at halftime with more than 200 yards. He threw some incompletions in the second half, but ended 22 of 30 for 397 yards and three TDs.

Brandon Castelo & Alex Jung (Sunny Hills, Fullerton)
Not often do teammates both rush for over 200 yards in the same game, but that was the case last week during a 34-17 win by the Lancers over Dana Hills of Dana Point. Rhe senior Castelo rushed for 239 yards and two touchdowns on 15 carries while the junior Jung rushed for 205 yards and two touchdowns.

Anthony Cooper (Crean Lutheran, Irvine)
Handing Saddleback Valley Christian of SJ Capistraon its first regular season loss since 2014, he rushed for 236 yards and three touchdowns as the Saints defeated the Warriors 41-24.

Dewey Cotton (St. Mary’s, Stockton)
While teammate Jake Dunniway was having his way throwing the football this guy’s way, he caught 12 passes for 195 yards and three touchdowns as the Rams defeated Cardinal Newman of Santa Rosa 49-32 and headed into this week’s Holy Bowl vs. Central Catholic of Modesto at 2-0 and at No. 9 in the state.

J.T. Daniels (Mater Dei, Santa Ana)
Completing 13 of his 15 pass attempts, the big-time sophomore had six touchdown passes in the first half and finished with 371 yards passing in the Monarchs’ 63-0 running-clock win over Mayfair of Lakewood. Daniels also rushed for a score, helping the Monarchs move to 2-0 on the season.

Cedric Dashiell II (Buena Park)
Someone we considered for one of our weekly player of the week honors, he had 11 tackles and 3.5 sacks when the Coyotes (2-0) went on the road and defeated Paramount 21-0. Buena Park seems on its way to another 10-win season.

Tyson Fraser & Trey Lake (Clovis)
Quarterback Lake passed for a career high of 348 yards on 23 of and had three touchdowns in a 34-28 overtime win over the Cougars (2-0) over Turlock. Fraser set a school record by hauling in 14 receptions for 248 yards, which is second most in school history.

Jeremiah Galaviz (Farmerville)
The senior QB stayed hot in the second game of the season by passing for 308 yards on 15 of 27 and had four touchdowns as the Aztecs beat Granite Hills of Porterville 33-23. Wide receiver Victor Castrejon also had two career highs by catching four touchdown passes on seven receptions for 248 yards.

Vincenzo Granatelli (Oak Park)
In his season opener, Granatelli tied a Ventura County record with seven touchdown passes and he followed that up by passing for four touchdowns and rushing for three scores in a 54-9 win over Desert of Edwards.

Ethan Gretzinger (Rolling Hills Prep, San Pedro)
In an eight-man special, the Huskies opened the season with a 55-49 win over Cal Lutheran of Wildomar as their sophomore quarterback passed for 217 yards and three touchdowns while rushing for 186 yards and three touchdowns.

Lawrence Hardy (Grant, Sacramento)
Hearing our friends at FOX 40 go nuts over the shots they had of Hardy scoring three times for the Pacers in their 42-14 win over Burbank of Sacramento almost was as much fun as watching them. Hardy scored on a 70-yard punt return, 20-yard interception return and on a long pass play.

Vincent Larsen (Kennedy, Fremont)
Named by as one of the East Bay Boys Athletes of the Week, Larsen turned 31 carries into 304 yards and two touchdowns during a 49-39 win over Berean Christian of Walnut Creek. According to the San Jose Mercury News, Larsen rushed for just 206 yards total last season and through two games he has almost doubled that total from last year.

Xavier Marshall (Centennial, Corona)
While the game ended in a heartbreaking 50-49 loss to IMG Academy of Florida, he did tie the school record for receptions in a game with 14 and scored three touchdowns to go along with 230 receiving yards. Centennial once again also had more than 500 yards of total offense.

Ryan Matlock (Newbury Park)
Putting his name into the school record book, he rushed for a school record-tying five touchdowns while rushing for 194 yards on 13 carries during a 62-21 win over Agoura. Who says the Panthers are only about QB Cameron Rising?

Kyle Moses (Mater Dei Catholic, Chula Vista)
He may show this season that the Crusaders are more than just RB C.J. Verdell. In a 41-14 triumph vs. El Capitan of Lakeside, Moses caught five passes for 88 yards and one TD, ran back a kickoff 79 yards for a score and went 55 yards for a TD on an interception.

Brett Neves (Downey, Modesto)
Giving his arm a good workout last Friday night, he threw 40 pass attempts and completed 25 of them for 465 yards and five touchdowns to lead the Knights past Patterson 50-21. The Tigers went 12-1 last season so getting that kind of yardage against them was extra-impressive.

Jack Newman (Analy, Sebastopol)
While Newman didn’t even pass for the most yards in the game he played, his 434-yard and six-TD effort came in a win as the Tigers defeated Rancho Cotate of Rohnert Park 63-46 to improve to 2-0 on the year.

Joe Oard (San Lorenzo Valley, Felton)
With no such thing as garbage time in the Cougars’ game against Homestead of Cupertino, he caught eight passes for 254 yards and two scores in a 35-34 win by SLV against Homestead of Cupertino.

Chiemeka Ochi (Mt. Carmel, San Diego)
Putting the ouch on the Mira Mesa quarterback, he had three sacks as the Sundevils won a low scoring 13-9 game to improve to 2-0 on the year. Ochi also had two sacks in Mt. Carmel’s season opening win over Otay Ranch.

Justin Osborn (Whittier Christian, La Habra)
On the receiving end for all four of Quinn Commans’ touchdown passes, this running back caught six passes for 226 yards and the four scores while also rushing for a score during a 38-34 loss to Rancho Christian of Temecula.

Jose Palomera (Mission Oak, Tulare)
He rushed for a career high of 220 yards on 17 carries and scored three touchdowns on runs of 28, 62, 51 yards as the Mustangs avoided a upset by Madera with a 42-41 win.

Demitri Patterson (Arcata)
Despite his rushing for 242 yards and five touchdowns, the Tigers suffered their first loss on the year as they dropped a 52-44 game to Trinity of Weaverville.

Drake Peabody (West, Torrance)
He wasn’t just a nobody in West’s 34-33 win over Culver City. Peabody passed for 265 yards and two touchdowns while also rushing for 137 yards and two more touchdowns.

Isaiah Perea (River City, West Sacramento)
He rushed for 237 yards and six touchdowns in a 47-0 win over McClatchy, which earned him a spot as a finalist for the Sac Bee Player of the Week honor.

Jacob Ryder (Live Oak, Morgan Hill)
Riding his ability to gain huge chunks of yards when handed the ball, Ryder rushed for 212 yards and five touchdowns on 20 carries during a 35-14 win over Christopher of Gilroy.

Isaac Sanchez (Rubidoux, Riverside)
He rushed for 241 yards and one touchdown as the Falcons defeated Patriot of Riverside 25-6.

Brent Schaeffer & Brenden Hall (Vista del Lago, Folsom)
Showing big passing numbers can come from Folsom and not be the quarterback at Folsom, Schaeffer completed 33 of his 52 pass attempts for 451 yards and five touchdowns as the Eagles defeated Ponderosa of Shingle Springs 34-27. Hall was his leading target as he caught 15 passes for 241 yards and one score.

Jake Simmons & Jaelen Ward (Rancho Cotate, Rohnert Park)
While it wasn’t enough to get the Cougars a win, these two juniors had quite the start to the season last week. In a 63-46 loss to Analy of Sebastopol, Simmons was 30 of 39 for 562 yards and six touchdowns with Ward his leading target with 15 receptions for 246 yards and one touchdown. Simmons also rushed for 67 yards on eight carries. Simmons’ single-game total is just two off the reported state best so far of 564 by Folsom’s Joe Curry. It’s also top 25 all-time in the state and looks like it is a record for the Redwood Empire (not counting St. Bernard’s of Eureka).

Tim Tague (Miramonte, Orinda)
All five of the Matadors’ touchdowns during a 35-7 win over St. Mary’s of Berkeley came from the arm of this signal caller. Tague, a frequent stat star last season, finished 336 yards through the air and had five TDs.

Trent Thompkins (Central, Fresno)
The sophomore quarterback passed for a career high of five touchdowns on 11 of 20 for 292 yards as the Grizzlies beat Sunnyside of Fresno 56-15. Receiver Jacob Torrez also had five receptions for 133 yards and two scores while kicker Tiago Palm made all (8-8) extra points.
