This is the place to go for a quick glance at the top teams in California and for some immediate analysis. On Saturday, No. 2 Centennial comes through in the final minutes to beat No. 1 team in Arizona while No. 3 St. John Bosco blanks one of the top perennial power teams from Ohio. The highest ranked team to lose on Friday was preseason No. 15 Orange Lutheran while the game of the night was No. 11 Oaks Christian outlasting No. 12 Chaminade.

Here is a look at scores through Saturday night, Aug. 27. Check back later in the weekend for completed scoreboard through Saturday, Aug. 27.

1. De La Salle (Concord) 1-0
Defeated Amador Valley (Pleasanton) 42-7. Spartans often struggle a bit early on in the season and some reports said they did again on Friday but they still were able to pick up a comfortable win. Tre’ White scored the game’s first touchdown on a long run and the Spartans never trailed.

2. Centennial (Corona) 1-0
Defeated Chandler (Arizona) 56-49 on Saturday. Chandler came into the game No. 1 in Arizona Republic Class 6A state rankings so this was a big win, not an upset scare. Centennial drove 98 yards in 83 seconds to score winning TD on 4-yard run by Tanner McKee with 52 seconds left (according to tweet from Riverside Press-Enterprise’s Eric-Paul Johnson).

3. St. John Bosco (Bellflower) 1-0
Defeated St. Xavier (Cincinnati, Ohio) 34-0 at University of Cincinnati on Saturday in game shown on ESPN networks. It’s always good when a top California team beats one from Ohio. We’re still smarting from 1983 loss by Servite to Moeller of Cincinnati (Servite’s 1st game, Moeller’s third) that basically decided the mythical national title.

4. Mater Dei (Santa Ana) 1-0
Defeated Bishop Amat (La Puente) 63-14. Leading 49-7 at halftime and 63-7 after three quarters, the Monarchs had a running clock win against a team that’s given them trouble in previous seasons.

5. Mission Viejo 1-0
Defeated Santa Margarita (Rancho Santa Margarita) 48-21. Extending their winning streak to 29 games, the Diablos have now not lost a game since September 2014. Matthew McDonald passed for 306 yards and four touchdowns in the first half while also rushing for a score. He finished the night 14 of 18 for 378 yards and five touchdowns.

6. Vista Murrieta (Murrieta) 1-0
Defeated Madison (San Diego) 20-9. It was a low scoring slugfest that was tied at six at halftime and after three quarters of play before the Broncos were able to take control in the fourth quarter to get the win. Madison was as high as No. 2 in some preseason San Diego Section rankings.

7. Narbonne (Harbor City) 1-0
Defeated No. 19 Serra (Gardena) 34-12. Kameron Denmark scored a rushing touchdown late in the first quarter to give the Gauchos a lead they would never surrender. He ended with two touchdown runs while quarterback Jalen Chatman passed for a touchdown and rushed for two scores.

8. Folsom 1-0
Defeated Couer d’Alene (Idaho) 56-35 on Saturday. More than solid debut for Joe Curry, latest QB for the Bulldogs, who threw for 551 yards (six first-half TDs).

9. Helix (La Mesa) 0-1
Lost to Timpview (Provo, Utah) 28-21 on Saturday. Not sure if that will be enough to drop the Scotties from CIF San Diego Section ranking. Timpview normally is very good in Utah.

10. Clayton Valley (Concord) 1-0
Defeated Reed (Nevada) 35-21. Akeal Laliand scored a touchdown and the Ugly Eagles’ defense added to the lead with a fumble recovery for a score to give them a 14-0 lead before the first quarter was half over. Lalaind ended the game with three touchdowns while James Teofilo also found the end zone once.

11. Oaks Christian (Westlake Village) 1-0
Defeated No. 12 Chaminade (West Hills) 65-55. In a game that had the L.A. Times’ Eric Sondheimer seemingly give up hope on making deadline it was Matt Corral who passed for 419 yards and two touchdowns while also rushing for a score while Brandon LaBrie rushed for 123 yards and four touchdowns in the shootout win.

A view from behind is what a lot of defenders see when playing Antioch's Najee Harris (No. 2). We had him with 11 carries for 227 yards and three TDs with a 35-yard TD pass reception and an interception on defense in 67-38 win over Lincoln of Stockton. Photo: Mark Tennis.

12. Chaminade (West Hills) 0-1
Lost to No. 11 Oaks Christian (Westlake Village) 65-55. Brevin White passed for 317 yards and three touchdowns while Michael Wilson caught seven passes for 200 yards but it wasn’t enough to get the win in a battle between two teams ranked inside our Top 20 state rankings. Don’t look for Chaminade to drop much in next week’s new rankings.

13. St. Mary’s (Stockton) 1-0
Defeated Serra (San Mateo) 63-35 on Saturday on the road. Impressive start for team that lost to a top CCS team (Los Gatos) on the road last season.

14. Del Oro (Loomis) 1-0
Defeated St. Paul (Santa Fe Springs) 44-20. Stone Smartt’s 13-yard touchdown run before halftime had the Golden Eagles leading 24-0 and they extended that lead to 31-0 when Cam Davis opened up the second half with his second touchdown of the night.

15. Lutheran (Orange) 0-1
Lost to La Mirada 21-14. Unfortunately for the Lancers, they were the top ranked team to lose to a lower ranked team on the opening Friday night. They were blanked in the second half and gave up a pick six for a score in the second half after leading 14-7 at halftime. La Mirada was No. 35 in our preseason Super 50 state rankings so the win obviously will cause a rise.

16. Antioch 1-0
Defeated Lincoln (Stockton) 67-38. We had hoped for a closer game to see Najee Harris for a full four quarters but we got a good look at some of the Panthers’ other offensive weapons. They led 38-8 after one quarter and ended just three points shy of setting a school record for points in a game.

17. Elk Grove 1-0
Defeated Inderkum (Sacramento) 37-6. Jalen Brown rushed for two touchdowns and 81 yards, Zion Thomas rushed for 66 yards and a touchdown and Jayden Machado had two touchdown passes to Gavin Reinwald for the Thundering Herd. It also was a matchup of the No. 4 and No. 5 teams in the Sac Bee Metro rankings with higher-ranked Elk Grove winning.

18. Long Beach Poly (Long Beach) 1-0
Defeated Los Alamitos 27-20. While the Jackrabbits had some trouble on special teams and defending trick plays, they used their rushing attack to open the season with a win. Aaron Shampklin rushed for 133 yards while Mike Mauai rushed for 116 yards and combined for three touchdowns.

19. Serra (Gardena) 0-2
Lost to No. 7 Narbonne (Harbor City) 42-12. After opening the season in Arizona, the Cavaliers returned home and were unable to avoid falling to a rare 0-2 start to the season.

20. St. Francis (Mountain View) 1-0
Defeated Oak Grove (San Jose) 24-7. In a rematch of last season’s CCS Open Division II championship game, the Lancers led 14-0 at halftime and this time they were able to hold onto the lead and get the win. Bennett Williams had the game’s first touchdown in the second quarter with a six-yard reception before later intercepting a pass on defense.

21. Serra (San Mateo) 0-1
Lost to No. 13 St. Mary’s of Stockton 63-35 on Saturday at home. The Padres get to play No. 1 De La Salle next.

22. Ridgeview (Bakersfield) 0-1
Lost to Stockdale (Bakersfield) 34-20. Even before the game started, the night wasn’t going well as the Wolfpack had two starters suspended before another was ejected in the first quarter. The two-time defending Central Section Division II champs were also ranked No. 1 to the start the season in the BVarsity Top 25.

23. Cathedral Catholic (San Diego) 1-0
Defeated Damonte Ranch (Nevada) 49-12. With a matchup looming against preseason No. 36 Central Catholic of Modesto, the Dons had an easy time opening the season with a win over an out of state team.

24. Murrieta Valley (Murrieta) 1-0
Defeated Santiago (Corona) 55-31. Sophomore QB Hank Bachmeier looked more like a senior on Friday night as he completed 17 of his 23 pass attempts for 234 yards and four touchdowns with Marquis Spiker catching five passes for 111 yards and three touchdowns.

25. Monte Vista (Danville) 1-0
Defeated Deer Valley (Antioch) 49-7. Washington commit Jake Haener had four touchdown passes to help the Mustangs take a 42-0 lead by halftime.
