No. 3 Bosco leaves No. 4 Mater Dei seeing red after 42-21 win that definitely was not as close as that score might indicate. There were no upsets on Friday night, but No. 24 Tesoro almost knocked off No. 7 Mission Viejo while No. 19 Archbishop Riordan lost on Saturday. Both No. 17 Foothill of Pleasanton and No. 20 Orange Lutheran also win against top opponents.

Here is a look at scores through Saturday night, Oct. 17 with some comments by editor Mark Tennis. Check back on Monday afternoon for the new, updated rankings.

1. De La Salle (Concord) 6-1

2. Centennial (Corona) 7-0
Defeated Roosevelt of Eastvale 59-7. According to tweet from Eric-Paul Johnson of Riverside Press-Enterprise, Centennial led 45-0 at halftime and had 318 total yards. Roosevelt had 20 total yards.

3. St. John Bosco (Bellflower) 7-0
Defeated No. 4 Mater Dei of Santa Ana 42-21. The score is misleading because the Braves were ahead 42-0 heading into the fourth quarter. Based on some tweets, could be that L.A. Times may switch from Centennial to Bosco in next rankings. For recap, CLICK HERE.

4. Mater Dei (Santa Ana) 6-1
LOST to No. 3 St. John Bosco of Bellflower 42-21. The Monarchs seemed to try to ball control the Braves with grind-it-out approach on offense. Just gave up too many big plays on defense. For recap, CLICK HERE.

5. Folsom 7-0
Did not play. The Bulldogs were on a bye. Since they have state-best 23-game win streak, good chance they are moving up in next rankings due to lopsided nature of Mater Dei loss to St. John Bosco.

6. Serra (Gardena) 7-1
Defeated Crespi of Encino 33-7. Should Cavs rise in front of Mater Dei next week as well? Comparative scores in wins over Bishop Amat don’t help, but wins over Narbonne and Loyola sure do.

7. Mission Viejo 8-0
Defeated No. 24 Tesoro of Las Flores 34-33. The Diablos rallied from being down 23-10 at halftime. They gave up more than 400 yards passing to Devon Modster of the Titans, but passing of Brock Johnson and rushing of Isaiah Miller barely was enough. Since Mater Dei has 35-14 win over Tesoro, doubt if we’re dropping the Monarchs lower.

8. Long Beach Poly (Long Beach) 5-2
LOST to No. 1 De La Salle of Concord 52-6. For recap, CLICK HERE.

9. Bishop Amat (La Puente) 6-2
Defeated Alemany of Mission Hills 49-24. Strong win by the Lancers over team that was No. 10 two weeks ago. The losses earlier were to Mater Dei and Serra.

10. Clayton Valley (Concord) 6-1
Defeated Northgate of Walnut Creek 41-3. The Uglies, remember, aren’t in the same league as De La Salle and wouldn’t face DLS in the NCS playoffs, either, since they are D2 and Spartans are D1. That one-point loss to Folsom also is continuing to get more significant.

11. Narbonne (Harbor City) 5-2
Defeated Gardena 64-6. Long Beach Poly’s lopsided loss, however, to De La Salle could hurt the next ranking since the Jackrabbits are one of the two teams the Gauchos have lost to.

12. Elk Grove 7-0
Defeated Pleasant Grove of Elk Grove 63-13. Count six more TDs for Ryan Robards. And after now having seen the Thundering Herd along with Long Beach Poly, they’re coming up big-time in the next rankings.

13. Mission Hills (San Marcos) 7-0
Defeated Rancho Buena Vista of Vista 47-7. The CIF San Diego Section’s No. 1 team rolled to another win. A 10-0 regular season seems likely.

14. Helix (La Mesa) 5-1
Defeated Mt. Miguel of Spring Valley 59-14. The next two games for the Highlanders against two current 6-1 teams – Valhalla and Grossmont – should be more difficult.

15. Oaks Christian (Westlake Village) 7-0
Did not play. The Lions are on their bye week. They’ll return next Friday to face St. Bonaventure of Ventura.

16. Westlake (Westlake Village) 6-1
Defeated Newbury Park 35-24. It was a performance that had one Panthers’ player tweeting after the game “best offense we’ve seen this year.”

17. Foothill (Pleasanton) 8-0
Defeated Monte Vista (Danville) 35-27. With just a previous 21-17 loss to Clayton Valley and having a win over Pittsburg, Monte Vista is easily the best team the Falcons have played so far. A quality win for sure.

18. Loyola (Los Angeles) 6-1
Did not play. The Cubs were on a bye and will take on Alemany of Mission Hills next week.

19. Archbishop Riordan (San Francisco) 5-1
LOST to Bellarmine of San Jose 14-6 on Saturday. Although the Bells still were without QB Troy Martig, they played more this week like the team that was No. 11 just two weeks ago prior to a loss to Archbishop Mitty.

20. Lutheran (Orange) 4-3
Defeated No. 25 Servite (Anaheim) 37-36. Trailing with four seconds left, the Lancers pitched it to Markell Quinn, who reached the end zone for the game-winning touchdown. To see play, CLICK HERE.

21. Camarillo 7-0
Defeated Calabasas 40-39. The Scorpions saw their 40-26 lead cut to one with 15 seconds remaining before getting a stop on an attempted two-point conversion. Calabasas suffered first loss of season.

22. St. Francis (Mountain View) 6-0
Defeated Sacred Heart Cathedral (San Francisco) 28-21. Junior Cyrus Habibi-Likio scored on touchdown runs of 43 and 50 yards in the final half of the third quarter to turn a 21-14 defecit into a 28-21 lead heading into the fourth quarter and that turned out to be the final score.

23. San Juan Hills (SJ Capistrano) 7-0
Defeated El Toro 40-36. After a touchdown run on fourth and goal from the 1-yard line by Brock Cazel to take the lead, the Stallions came up with the stop inside their own 20 in the final minutes for the win. They get No. 7 Mission Viejo next.

24. Tesoro (Las Flores) 6-2
Lost to No. 7 Mission Viejo 39-33. Leading by 13 at halftime, the Titans’ offense struggled in the second half against the Diablos. Not a loss obviously that should drop them much or not at all.

25. Servite (Anaheim) 3-4
Lost to No. 20 Lutheran (Orange) 37-36. One stopped run away from the win, the Friars gave up the game-winning touchdown on a short run with no time remaining.
