NEW BOYS BASKETBALL
TOP 20 OVERALL RANKINGS

Most elite teams around the state jumped into league play this past week and the results were predictable. The top dozen teams didn’t suffer any losses, with the big win of the week being No. 5 Fairfax of Los Angeles downing No. 13 Cathedral of Los Angeles in the championship game of the Huntington Park Tournament on Saturday.

The loss, however, didn’t cost the Phantoms in the rankings. Fairfax has proved to be a nationally-ranked club and coach William Middlebrooks’ team at Cathedral will face No. 4 Bishop Montgomery, No. 10 Price, No. 7 Long Beach Poly and tough Cantwell Sacred Heart in its next four games so Cathedral’s ranking will surely take care of itself based on results.

Speaking of Price, it was a big week for coach Michael Lynch’s program. On Tuesday night, the Knights retired the No. 23 jersey of current Portland Trail Blazer guard and 2010 Cal-Hi Sports Mr. Basketball Allen Crabbe III, who witnessed Price’s 80-71 victory over Gahr of Cerritos. After a 65-52 victory over Orangewood Academy on Thursday, Price ventured down to the San Diego/LA challenge and came away with a 69-66 victory over San Diego County’s No. 2 ranked team — La Costa Canyon of Carlsbad.

The win over LCC was the 500th of Lynch’s career — six of those which gave the small school power a CIF state crown. We always compile all-time win marks based upon on-court records and Lynch’s wife — Becky Lynch – made sure to contact Cal-Hi Sports about her husband’s total beforehand.

Sometimes the discrepancy in the two marks — ours and what a school historian, coaching staff, or booster club has — cannot be easily figured out. Fortunately, Lynch and his staff keeps meticulous records and it was easy to see the difference was due to three forfeit wins Lynch was awarded over the years.

Dating back to 1996, Lynch entered the season with 488 career wins. If you remove the forfeits from his total, that would leave the former police detective with 500 wins as of Saturday night.

Cal-Hi Sports congratulates Lynch, his staff current and former players on the accomplishment.

If all schools took the time to compile school records — and contact us about them — the way the Price basketball program does, our vast state record book would be even more complete and accurate for everyone to enjoy. When marks are broken or milestones surpassed, they then could be celebrated and given their proper attention.

NEW GIRLS BASKETBALL
TOP 20 OVERALL RANKINGS

Anyone looking for huge matchups coming in the next week will quickly see the stacked lineup of games that will be played at the MLK St. Mary’s Showcase in Stockton.

The host Rams initially released a schedule that had them playing Mater Dei of Santa Ana in what this week would be a No. 1 vs. No. 2 matchup, but in November the opponents were switched. On Saturday, St. Mary’s instead will face No. 5 Sierra Canyon of Chatsworth while Mater Dei is playing No. 7 Miramonte of Orinda.

Sierra Canyon also is playing on Monday at St. Mary’s and will be battling with No. 3 St. Ignatius of San Francisco. The Rams come back on Monday to play La Jolla Country Day. Mater Dei is not playing on Monday in Stockton while St. Ignatius is not playing on Saturday. Games both days begin at 8:30 a.m. inside Morelli Gym.

In this week’s rankings, the first nine teams all won their games so there was no movement. Previous No. 10 Redondo Union, however, suffered a two-point loss to Bishop Montgomery of Torrance and then lost to Mater Dei 67-43. Previous No. 12 Ventura also went down to defeat in a 50-40 loss to Harvard-Westlake of North Hollywood while previous No. 16 Mission Hills of San Marcos dropped its second game of the season to La Jolla Country Day.

The big winners due to those results – plus getting some wins of their own – are new No. 12 Vanden of Fairfield and new No. 13 Mira Costa of Manthattan Beach. Neither team was in the State 20 one week ago.
