St. Margaret’s knocks off Christian

All year long, it’s looked like Christian of El Cajon would be the class of Southern California among schools with Division IV enrollments, but on Friday night at Granite Hills High it was proven that St. Margaret’s of San Juan Capistrano has returned to that status.

St. Marg logoIn also ending the long longest active winning streak in the state, the Tartans scored 21 straight points to open up a 28-7 lead in the first half that they would never surrender in a 48-21 win over the previously unbeaten Patriots.

It was the second straight win over a 13-0 opponent for St. Margaret’s, which defeated 13-0 Grace Brethren of Simi Valley in last week’s CIF Southern Section East Valley Division final.

Oscar Gomez rushed for a score before two touchdown passes by George Krantz opened up the 21-point lead that would be cut to 28-14 at halftime.

Adrian Petty started the second half scoring with a touchdown for the Patriots as the lead was cut to 28-21 in the second half, but Krantz threw his fourth touchdown on the night with a 68-yard connection to Nick Shanks and then Shanks followed with a pick six to pump the lead back up to 42-21.

Christian has been known for some dramatic comebacks in recent weeks, but that deficit was too much.

St. Margaret’s is not playing an unbeaten team in next week’s CIF Division IV state final, but its task is more daunting because the Tartans are playing two-time defending D4 state champ Central Catholic of Modesto. St. Margaret’s will be going for its second CIF state title and it’s obvious that it’s not going to be quite like the first, which was a 59-7 win over Hamilton of Hamilton City.

With Christian’s loss, Liberty of Madera Ranchos will now take the longest current win streak into next season at 17 games.

Didn’t see that one coming, did you? All year long you all have been obsessing over Christian and St. Margaret’s goes out and just absolutely demolishes them in every facet of the game. Maybe it’s time to learn about more than just one small school.

Glad a lot of people at St. Margaret’s email me all the time about the great job we do. We have written tons of stuff about their program for the last 5, 6 years.
