Major moves for next week’s State 25 are ensured after No. 3 Mater Dei falls to JSerra 17-10 in what can be called biggest win for JSerra in its history. Other big winners include Serra of Gardena, Santa Margarita, Milpitas and Clayton Valley of Concord.

1. ST. JOHN BOSCO (BELLFLOWER) 7-1
The Braves were trailing 28-27 in the third quarter to No. 14 Orange Lutheran and the Lancers had the ball and were moving. D.J. Willis then came up with a game-changing interception, which helped Bosco end up with a 54-43 win. QB Josh Rosen still has thrown just one interception this season.

2. DE LA SALLE (CONCORD) 8-0
Andrew Hernandez had 172 yards rushing and three TDs in the first half as the Spartans defeated No. 16 Foothill of Pleasanton 56-21. Foothill had its moments on offense driving the field against the DLS defense but couldn’t stop the DLS offense even after QB Anthony Sweeney went out with a shoulder injury. Extent of injury wasn’t known as of Friday night.

3. MATER DEI (SANTA ANA) 6-2
The Monarchs have been in some close games, such as the loss to Bosco and wins over Servite and Westlake, but this time they fell in another close one 17-10 to No. 9 JSerra. The loss creates a void at No. 3.

4. FOLSOM 8-0
A 91-yard bomb from Jake Browning to Josh Deguara sparked the Bulldogs to a 56-21 win over previously unbeaten and No. 24 Rocklin. Will Folsom now move up to No. 3 with Mater Dei’s loss?

5. CENTENNIAL (CORONA) 6-2
The good news as far as Centennial’s ranking is concerned is a 60-28 win over Santiago of Corona that feature six TDs from junior RB J.J. Taylor. The bad news is that Mater Dei (which beat Centennial early in the season) lost to JSerra so we know for sure that JSerra is going to have to be ranked higher next week due to common opponent.

6. OCEANSIDE 8-0
A 28-14 win over Carlsbad will keep the Pirates No. 1 in the San Diego Section. The score was tied at one point 14-14.

7. SERVITE (ANAHEIM) 4-4
It looks like the Friars are headed for another 6-6 season like last year after a 22-17 loss to No. 11 Santa Margarita. This loss also will have to send them down toward the No. 15 range in next week’s rankings even though their other losses are to Bishop Gorman, De La Salle and Mater Dei.

8. LONG BEACH POLY (LONG BEACH) 7-1
Did not play. The Jackrabbits had a bye.

9. JSERRA (SJ CAPISTRANO) 7-1
Coach Jim Hartigan’s club will jump up to No. 3 or No. 4 in next week’s State 25 and should get national ranking consideration after 17-10 win over No. 3 Mater Dei. Their only loss is 49-44 to No. 1 St. John Bosco.

10. GRANT (SACRAMENTO) 8-0
With the big question remaining whether the Pacers will be D1 or D2 in the CIF Sac-Joaquin Section playoffs, there’s no question they will remain No. 2 in the region after 42-27 win over Sheldon of Sacramento.

11. SANTA MARGARITA (RANCHO SM) 6-2
The Eagles still have St. John Bosco and Mater Dei to play in the Trinity League but only having losses to Bishop Gorman and JSerra and now having a win over Servite (22-17 on Friday) combined with earlier ones against Bishop Amat, Orange Lutheran and Corona Santiago is making their resume look awfully good.

12. BAKERSFIELD 7-1
A 26-7 win over Centennial of Bakersfield will keep the defending CIF Division I state champs No. 1 in the CIF Central Section.

13. CRESPI (ENCINO) 7-1
According to tweets, the Celts did not attempt a pass in their 50-17 victory over Chaminade of West Hills. In addition to Bishop Amat, they are the hottest teams in the CIF Southern Section outside of the Trinity League.

14. LUTHERAN (ORANGE) 4-4
It was another tough loss for the Lancers as they fell 54-43 to No. 1 St. John Bosco. The score was similar to their 52-49 loss to No. 5 Corona Centennial.

15. WESTLAKE (WESTLAKE VILLAGE) 6-2
The Warriors rolled on in their half of the Marmonte League with a 52-17 victory over Moorpark. They play St. Bonaventure next. Only losses to Long Beach Poly and Mater Dei.

16. FOOTHILL (PLEASANTON) 7-1
Although the final score was 56-21, the Falcons certainly did enough in their loss to De La Salle to stay in the conversation that they should be regarded as the No. 2 team in the Bay Area behind the Spartans.

17. BISHOP AMAT (LA PUENTE) 5-3
Did not play. The Lancers had a bye.

18. SERRA (GARDENA) 6-2
After their bye week, the Cavaliers beat No. 19 Alemany 38-21 and are firmly in the mix in the Mission League with Crespi (one-point win) and Bishop Amat (seven-point loss).

19. ALEMANY (MISSION HILLS) 6-2
It was only a few weeks ago when the Warriors were riding high at No. 5 after a big win over Chaminade. That win no longer carries much significance and Alemany has just lost again 38-21 to Serra.

20. NOTRE DAME (SHERMAN OAKS) 6-2
Back-up QB Adam Carr stepped up with 284 yards passing as the Knights hung in there in the Mission League with a hard-fought 28-21 win over Loyola of Los Angeles.

21. SERRA (SAN MATEO) 5-2
The Padres won on Saturday 36-10 over Archbishop Riordan of San Francisco.

22. MILPITAS 7-0
After their 28-0 win over Wilcox of Santa Clara, it may be time to move up the Trojans to No. 2 in the Bay Area, hopping San Mateo Serra to match SJ Mercury News and prior to their big game next Friday against Los Gatos.

23. CATHEDRAL CATHOLIC (SAN DIEGO) 8-1
It wasn’t much of a rivalry game with St. Augustine as the Dons rolled the injury-riddled Saints 57-22.

24. ROCKLIN 7-1
The Thunder had some success in the second quarter against No. 4 Folsom, but in the end got overwhelmed like everyone else the Bulldogs have played and lost 56-21.

25. HELIX (LA MESA) 7-1
It was a big win over Valhalla of El Cajon, but the Highlanders had their streak of shutouts end at four since the Norsemen did get into the end zone in the 49-7 contest.

It was an emotional night for the city of oceanside with the retiring of the late great Jr. Seau’s jersey that was presented to his family. Love prayers and respect to everyone involved. In regards to the game it seems that teams that can run the ball good give us a little but of trouble it was a league game so Carlsbad came with it they played hard. The games that will push us in my opinion will be helix or dons.
Other than this team is championship bound.

It is interesting to note that Cathedral Catholic beat St. Augustine by 35 and Oceanside beat them by 7, though injury does play somewhat into that. Could Cathedral meet Oceanside in the SD playoffs? If they do and CC beats Oceanside, what does that say about Folsom? I am sure that would give the CIF a headache….hence the need for the Open Semis you suggested with the winners going for state. Imagine if such a scenario occurs and Folsom is left to play a vastly inferior opponent in D1 and rolls over them. Wouldn’t a DLS vs. SJC and Folsom vs. SJB be much better with winners going for state…say a DLS vs. Folsom for state (or would SJB and SJC meet before hand in the playoffs?)

Yes, Cathedral Catholic could play Oceanside in the San Diego Open Division playoffs. If CC were to win, it says Folsom is a great team, but it’s not going to be enough for Folsom to get selected for the Open Division ahead of De La Salle. Looks right now that both are great teams and that it was a mistake for the CIF to do away with the Open Division regional games. And yes, of course a semifinal Open Division doubleheader would be awesome. Finally, not sure who you mean by SJC but if it’s JSerra they’re in Bosco’s league and the two could play again in the CIFSS Pac-Five Division playoffs.

I think it is pretty clear Folsom is a great team… They are beating everybody they play in the same fashion they did against Cathedral in the first game of the year (just like I predicted on another blog). The score comparison between Oceanside and Cathedral against St. Augustine is a valid point but if you are going to make that comparison you also have to include the Torrey Pines comparison where Cathedral won by one point and Oceanside won by 3 tds… The open division playoffs will be interesting in SD… there are three clear contenders in Helix, Oceanside, and Cathedral… if Mission Hills gets in the open they could also do some damage… and Ramona isn’t looking too bad these days as well…

Three San Diego teams have one state championships. The Pirates have 2. I see Pirates helix matchup for championship that winner will play a regional playoff game for a D1 shot at state. San Diego has had consistent programs that can play against pac5 and riverside teams. SJB will go to open. I see corona vs Pirates for playoff to D1 state.

Corona Centennial will be in the CIFSS Pac-Five Division. If it goes to a bowl game it will be the Open Division by virtue of winning that divisional title over the likes of SJB, JSerra, etc. Oceanside’s likely D1 bowl game opponent if it were to win the SD Open Div title to us looks like will come from the CIF Central Section.

Watching the Pirates play every week I see regression in a couple of areas that if not corrected they will have problems against a fast team like Helix. Its too bad Coach Carroll can’t be on the sidelines. Essentially, it will come down to a game of chess, and with all equal, the coaches with the best strategies at the correct time will win the Open Bowl.

could it be possible that Oceanside could play Mission Viejo again in regional game? Or someobody from that division? What teams could compete with oceanside from central section?

      Posted October 27, 2014 at 8:39 am | Permalink

Yes, it’s possible. Upland is currently No. 1 ranked team in CIFSS West Valley Division. Losses to Tesoro and Mater Dei but wins over St. Bonaventure and Chino Hills. If Mission Viejo wins that section title, it’ll be hard to overcome loss to Liberty of CIF Central Section. I think Mission would need to have a team like Clovis North win in the Central Section.
