It’s been a rough few days for the Vacaville High football team after senior running back-defensive back Demetrious Ward was killed in the early hours of Monday morning.
According to police, Ward, 18, was sitting in his truck outside an apartment complex in the city at 1:30 a.m. when he was shot in the head. He died a short time later while in surgery at a local hospital.
Reasons remain unknown why Ward was there at that time and police have said he may not have driven there alone. The investigation is obviously underway.
Earlier in the weekend, Ward played in the Bulldogs’ 42-0 win over Berkeley and had two tackles, including a caused fumble. Statistics on MaxPreps also show that Ward played against Lincoln of Stockton in Vaca’s previous game with six carries for 22 yards and two tackles.
The Bulldogs, who are 4-1 with a one-point loss to Oak Ridge of El Dorado Hills and additional wins over Lincoln (40-10), Enterprise of Redding (44-22) and Granite Bay (13-7), have a home game on Friday against Rodriguez of Fairfield and according to KCRA TV there will be a tribute to Ward.
Both head coach Mike Papadopoulos, a recent Cal-Hi Sports State Coach of the Year, and principal Ed Santopadre, who also helps coach the team, described Ward as popular and well-liked by his teammates.

I will miss his smile everyday of my life, his laugh Nd his charm.. Big Meech loved playimg football since he was 5 and I will have to say that his football coach’s and his teammates all contributed in the young man he was, and that was a hard working and very proud young man who was loved bY everyone..
