Two new No. 1 teams in this week’s CIF state bowl game rankings are San Clemente (school logo on left) for D2 South and El Capitan of Lakeside for D3 South.

In keeping with tradition and how we’ve done rankings in the past when De La Salle has lost games to top-ranked out-of-state opponents, the Spartans remain No. 2 behind St. John Bosco. New No. 1 teams in Southern California for the bowl game divisions, meanwhile, are San Clemente in Division II and El Capitan in Division III.

Check below for this week’s new list of the Cal-Hi Sports State 25 football rankings plus a list of the top few teams in the fourth CIF state bowl game divisional rankings for the 2014 season.

Here we go again.. You guys have had Heritage at the no.3 spot in D2 south for weeks. They defeat a D1 team (Etiwanda), move to 5-0 (with the longest active winning streak in the state), and now they are not in rankings?? Wth? That makes sense..

Sorry, actually Heritage was not No. 3 last week. That was an error. Redlands East Valley had to move up after beating Rancho Verde. REV also was moved up to No. 1 in its CIFSS division.

Always enjoy the So Cal bias of this poll. Good comedy to see DLS not move to #1 despite beat a tough Servite team and Bosco losing. Last year is not supposed to matter in this year’s poll, unless it happens to slant toward a So Cal team’s argument. Keep the jokes coming.

Previous years always have mattered in the 30 years that we have been doing state rankings. We kept DLS No. 1 in the same situation many times. If Bosco were to win the rest of its games (which is what anybody who does rankings should always do and that’s look ahead), it would have two wins perhaps over Mater Dei plus all of the other Trinity League wins. No doubt if Bosco doesn’t lose again and gets back to the Open Division bowl game that it should go into that game No. 1 and DLS at No. 2. That’s all we’re saying here.

Look at your Cal High San Ramon ranking and tell me last year matters Mark. Cal has been their last three opponent’s 126 to 20 and yet every week they move down in your rankings. This week was due to Pittsburg losing. SRV has two losses along with two other teams that you still rank higher. This doesn’t jive with a team that played in the D1 NCS Championship game last year.

Head to head results for this year always take precedence over last year. Last year matters in comparison to teams that don’t have head to head results, such as De La Salle and Folsom. If Cal High keeps winning in the EBAL at some point the team can go back in front of Pitt despite head to head loss. Just not at that point yet.

Good point Mark, so why does SRV with three straight losses get the nod to be ranked over both Pitt and Cal? There is no head to head results this year. Why do these two teams (SRV & Cal) not rank out as you report they should

We continue to have Pitt ahead of Cal because Pitt beat Cal and we continue to have SRV ahead of Pitt because SRV beat Pitt. All of the team’s that SRV has lost to (Logan, DLS, Foothill) are ranked higher.

I concur and I am a So. Cal fan. I just need to see DLS play a road game against a top 50 caliber national squad before anointing them as the state’s best. They always win at home and chose not to travel at all this year OOS. That’s two years in a row now what gives DLS folks?

I’m from Nor-Cal and I say keep DLS behind SJB. Bosco lost to the number one team in the land.

My questions is, what if Folsom defeats Del Oro by a greater margin than DLS (which won 52-0), will they be still ranked below DLS and/or be still less likely chosen for the Open than DLS? Considering Folsom beat GB, 63-0 I could see Folsom nearing the same score on Del Oro. It will be interesting next week if such a scenario occurs.

    • Elsonian
      Posted September 30, 2014 at 10:29 am | Permalink

CalHiSports got it right, and DLS should still be higher than Folsom, assuming FHS wins against Del Oro. FHS has not yet played any teams from the Trinty, even with wins against Clovis and Cathedral Catholic. USA Today seems like they have the most balance Top 25 list, and DLS is #5, while Folsom just made it on this week at #24.

    • Mark Tennis
      Posted September 30, 2014 at 11:29 am | Permalink

Folsom could beat Del Oro 100-0 and it doesn’t matter. The CIF commissioners who will be voting are well aware of what happened when Folsom and DLS played the last two years. They will be reminded of it during the meeting as well. Folsom’s only chance to be ahead of DLS for the Open Division likely was lost when DLS surged past Servite in the second half last Saturday. It will be a monumental upset if either DLS or Folsom loses through the section playoffs.

    • Darin B
      Posted October 1, 2014 at 1:17 pm | Permalink

I could make a clear case for Folsom to be ranked #1 in the north if they roll the SJS playoff and kill everyone including Grant who looks good so far. DLS’ playoff bracket won’t pose as many challenges. Thing is, Mark is right about the last 2 matchups having an effect even thought this Folsom team is much better than those two teams. Getting spanked two years running leaves a stain. DLS gets #1 Open nod with unbeaten record regardless of what Folsom does despite the possibility of a superior overall resume.

      Oceanside higher than what team(s)

No way they should be ranked ahead of any of these teams. SJB, DLS,CC,MD,Folsom,Alemany,Nade

      What is your argument?

    • Mark Tennis
      Posted September 30, 2014 at 11:19 am | Permalink

Mission Hills is No. 2 in San Diego by everyone and is playing Oceanside next. Only loss to a top team from Utah. Beat Oceanside twice last year. Helix lost to Cathedral Catholic. Of course, Helix is kicked out of the State 25 for now. Only way Helix comes back in is behind Cathedral Catholic and it’s going to take awhile for Cathedral Catholic in the rankings to overcome the 55-10 loss to Folsom.

It was a bad decision to make the call on D1 open bowl. The 2 Top teams from the North and South should play each other for a chance to represent the North and South in the Open Bowl, with the winner going to the State Open Bowl championship and the losers representing D1 for the north and south. Now we are back people controlling the destiny of the teams, instead of the players on the field. Records and Ratings mean nothing on Game Day!

James, I rarely defend DLS and quite frankly don’t admire what they stand for. However, Folsom is a scoring machine and if they beat Del Oro by more than DLS did it still doesn’t mean they are better than DLS in my mind.

  8. James
    Posted September 30, 2014 at 8:46 am | Permalink

    Monte,

I agree with your statement. I am just thinking of what scenario could take place that would put Folsom in the open over DLS (should both go undefeated). I could see a potential case where Servite loses another game and Cathedral Catholic goes on to win their division incl. the playoffs. It would make Folsom’s case stronger, but wouldn’t guarantee anything.

I agree with John. That has been my thinking that the loser of the Nor Cal or So Cal Open would go into the D1 state championship game for two reasons: who is #1 in Nor Cal and So Cal is subjective (think 2008 when everyone at Cal Hi and across the state wanted DLS at 2 losses to be chosen over Grant, but thankfully that did not happen), and the Division 1 representative who lost the Nor Cal or So Cal open is most likely the same team who would have been chosen any way to be in D1 had they not played the open. It would give teams like Folsom or Oceanside a chance to knock of DLS and SJB and if not, still be in the state game

    • Mark Tennis
      Posted September 30, 2014 at 11:36 am | Permalink

Another possibility and one that DLS people have told me they would love is for the top four Open Division teams (two from north, two from south) to get seeded and then they play a doubleheader that Saturday while all of the other regional division bowl games are taking place. Obviously, that would then give us a DLS game vs. the No. 2 team from the South and then in most years you’d have the CIFSS Pac-Five winner playing No. 2 team from North. This makes the Open Division itself that much more prestigious (which it isn’t positioned as such by the CIF) and it also makes it possible for the Open Division final to be a matchup between two teams from the same region.

How about having teams from schools that can draw players from an unlimited geographical territory be defined as “open” for the sake of an official term?
Teams that are tied to a specific territory can then be put into D 1-5 dependent on their enrollment.

Yes, Christian of El Cajon will be on the board for CIF D4 state bowl game if it wins San Diego D3 section title. The CIF has taken some of the confusion out of its criteria and also accepted the San Diego Section’s proposal to move down all of its section champions this year. San Diego D1 champ this year, for example, will be D2 for bowl games, etc. San Diego wanted to do this because it was changing its own Open Division format.

I agree, but Christian of El Cajon and Sierra Canyon of Chatsworth will have to win tougher section playoff brackets than CVC will have to win in order to get eligible for the bowl games. St. Margaret’s clearly is in the mix for one of those two slots should it win in its section playoff as well.

As a So Cal dweller and fan I have to disagree with your take regarding SJ Bosco being rated over DLS (and I am not a DLS supporter at all). What they have done this year beating quality teams in Byrnes and Servite should be credited with the #1 ranking. I understand that travelling to take on a top 3 national teams should also credit SJ Bosco even in a defeat but a loss is still a loss. DLS hasn’t played one strong nationally relevant team on the road yet and probably won’t all year so there is time for the rankings to change due to SOS differences. It makes no sense that Folsom with arguably their best team in a decade won’t face DLS this year. Total bullocks if you ask me.

Good argument but we don’t change rankings based on weekly strength of schedule differences. Computers do and that’s fine. But we don’t.
