There’s an obvious difference for the All-State Underclass Teams as chosen by Cal-Hi Sports in softball and baseball. It’s just so much more difficult for freshmen and sophomores to crack the elite group of juniors.

State Sophomore Player of the Year Mickey Moniak from La Costa Canyon of Carlsbad is not the only sophomore on the first team honors’ squad for All-State Underclass, but the only one joining him is JSerra’s Brady Shockey. The other 28 first teamers are all juniors.

On the second team, five sophomores joined 25 juniors. As for freshmen, State Player of the Year Tommy Palomera of Chatsworth was considered for All-State Underclass but he and the rest of the state’s elite ninth-graders will just have to wait.

State Junior Player of the Year Joe DeMers from College Park of Pleasant Hill was joined on the first team by teammate Trevor Larnach while the Falcons (who were No. 2 overall in the final state rankings) also had outfielder Nick Oar on the second team. No other school in the state has two on the first team and three overall.

There were a few other schools that ended up with one on the first team and one on the second. They are Alemany of Mission Hills, Elk Grove, Great Oak of Temecula and Hart of Newhall.

Great accomplishment for the Great Oak kids. However, one correction is needed. Zack Noll was a Sophomore this year.

      Thanks, it’s fixed.
Makes it very hard for us when All-CIFSS teams come out with no positions and no indication if a player is a senior, junior, etc.
Hope somebody fixes that situation moving forward.
