Boys: SRV joins top 10, HMB is lone newcomer

Cal’s Justin Cobbs wasn’t the only East Bay player to hit some clutch shots last week that brought down an undefeated team.

Earlier in the week, San Ramon Valley’s Gregg Polosky and Jerry Karczewski connected for two big buckets that led the Wolves to a 59-56 win in overtime over arch-rival Monte Vista.

It was the first loss of the season for the visiting Mustangs, who ended up not dropping behind El Cerrito to No. 3 in this week’s Cal-Hi Sports Bay Area Top 20 because the Gauchos dropped a Saturday game to Modesto Christian that was unreported on some Bay Area news outlets. SRV, meanwhile, used the big win to move up from No. 13 to No. 9.

Polosky hit the first big basket at the regulation horn that forced the game into overtime. Karczewski came through for the second with a 3-pointer that dropped through with 4.1 seconds in the overtime.

This week’s only new team is Half Moon Bay, which improved to 18-2. The Cougars won their first nine games before suffering back-to-back losses to Moreau Catholic and Menlo-Atherton and since then has won nine more in a row.

Girls: Sacred Heart Cathedral growing up fast

After losing their West Catholic Athletic League opener 44-41 to crosstown arch rival St. Ignatius at the University of San Francisco on January 7, the Sacred Heart Cathedral of San Francisco Irish girls have won seven straight to take over the WCAL’s top spot.

The LyRyan Russell-coached girls are also now the third team after St. Ignatius and Archbishop Mitty of San Jose to be the highest ranked team from the WCAL, and have moved up to No. 6 in this week’s Cal-Hi Sports Bay Area Top 20.

During the seven-game run, SHC pinned a 28-point defeat on a San Jose Presentation team that would go on to upset Mitty, they beat Mitty by 13 points, they had a close three-point win over up and coming Mountain View St. Francis, and then last week the Irish posted a 57-42 home win over St. Ignatius and another easy win over Presentation, 66-51, on the road.

There is a tough test coming this week in the rematch with Mitty, but right now the young team seems to be firing on all cylinders.

“Facing the kind of non-league competition we did doesn’t get any better,” said second-year head coach and 1997 SHC grad Russell. “It gave the girls the growing pains I wanted them to go through to get ready for our league and its challenging schedule.”

The team is led by Girls of Summer standout and University of Pacific-bound senior point guard and three-year starter GeAnna Summers-Luaulu and her 14.8 ppg average. After that, none of the other girls has more than one year of varsity experience.

They are CIF Sac-Joaquin Section, which is not considered “Bay Area.” Strong squad to be sure.

Mission and Washington in AAA San Francisco is definitely in the top 20. For one reason, they beat Riordan in their own tournament. Washington is also better than several of those so called top 20 teams. Why no mention of either ?
