It’s no problem with Long Beach Poly going to No. 6. Archbishop Mitty & Oak Ridge get huge boosts as well. Latest new No. 1 in D4 South, meanwhile, will be Francis Parker.

Why isn’t Elk Grove High school not ranked?

    • Mark Tennis
      Posted November 5, 2013 at 8:00 am | Permalink

Elk Grove has a loss to Franklin and Franklin is a team that got destroyed by Jesuit. Elk Grove’s best wins are against Grant (7-3) and who else? We have Rocklin higher this week heading into its game with Del Oro. Next week, Elk Grove probably goes back in front of the Del Oro-Rocklin loser.

Vista Murrieta Broncos continues to be excluded from the consideration of top 25 by CalHiSports. WHY? They are 8-1, only loss was to a good Cathedral Catholic on a sloppy play night. They have taken care of and dominated all else on their schedule, and have done so more handily than some other in the top 25 have done. They currently are ranked #1 in Inland Division in the latest SS Poll, ahead of both Rancho Cucamonga and Corona Centennial. They are ranked #6 by FoxSportsWest in the SS, ahead of 5 other teams you have in state the top 25. Where is the love???

    • Posted November 4, 2013 at 7:08 pm | Permalink

Vista for some reason cannot get any love this year. Press Enterprise won’t even write about them on their online paper. If they do it’s a snobby remark. Or some short reference to Vistas victory. Don’t know what happened but kids have worked hard and overcome obstacles previous years did not experience.

We have considered Vista Murrieta every week. Just disagree with those other rankings you mention based on our criteria. If Cathedral Catholic were a better team and hadn’t just lost to St. Augustine (a team Eastlake beat for example) then Vista Murrieta would be higher for us. Last year, a San Diego team (Oceanside) suffered a lot in our rankings due to a loss to an IE team. Same is true in reverse this year. Losses count and that was a bad one. If they win the Inland Division title, they’ll be back up there.

Mark, I guess I just have to disagree with your judging criteria. When looking at wins versus common opponents, Vista has had more dominating wins versus REV, Mur Val, and Crespi than did Mission Viejo, Rancho Cucamonga and Notre Dame. You also state you consider past years in your ratings ala DLS, Vista has been in the Inland finals for 4 straight years. Guess we’ll see how the rest of the season and playoffs play out. Also it should be noted Alemany lost to Norco and Mater Dei lost to RSM and in my opinion are in the same league as a Cathedral Catholic. Rancho need an amazing comeback to beat a fairly weak Los Osos two weeks ago. We’ll see who’s right ranking Vista highly, CalHi or Maxpreps, Fox Sports West, Press Enterprise and the CIF SS themselves.

All that you write is completely correct. It’s just the loss to Cathedral Catholic, in our system, costs a lot more than it does apparently for the other ones.

Thanks for the acknowledgement. I guess I just feel based on the dominance displayed in their victories, and the “punishment” that a loss to Cathedral inflicts in your rating system, that Alemany’s loss to Norco and Mater Dei’s loss to RSM ought to be more equivalent. They CLEARLY are of the same caliber, or in my opinion superior to some, that you have in your Top 25. But it is your right to stack them as you see fit, and it’s our right to disagree. If it’s Vista versus Rancho C or Centennial in the finals, it will be one hell of a game again.

They consider the San Diego Section weak. Over the past few years teams such as Oceanside, Cathedral Catholic, Helix and Madison have been puttin’ it down in state bowl games. We in San Diego know how good teams are in this area. No respect is truly given this way. SDS has to keep winnning to prove doubters wrong.

Oceanside isn’t ranked because it has a 30-7 loss to Mission Hills. I was at the Serra game so I know it’s a team that can stay with anybody. If they keep playing like they have the last two weeks, it will all work out.

      • Oside Fan
        Posted November 5, 2013 at 8:01 pm | Permalink

I watched Oside-Serra game live, and the Serra-Chaminade game on TV. If I remember correctly, Oside was winning with 2 minutes to go, and could’ve easily won. It was a really exciting and fun game to watch, even though the Pirates lost.
The Serra-Chaminade game was a dud. Chaminade just didn’t look like they belonged on the same field. What I don’t understand is how they can still be ranked with that kind of showing?
The loss to Mission Hills was bad, but six turnovers against a good team is rarely going to lead to a victory.
Looking forward to playoffs at this point. It seems best for San Diego teams to just focus on what can be controlled, winning the section title.

        • Mark Tennis
          Posted November 5, 2013 at 9:39 pm | Permalink

Chaminade has wins over Oaks Christian, Sherman Oaks Notre Dame, Valencia and Venice.
Oceanside’s best win so far probably is against Ramona, which isn’t in the same ballpark as Oaks Christian, ND or Valencia.
Oside is clearly talented enough to be in the top 10 (we did have them that high to start) but it will just take them some time to get past a really bad loss.
If they keep playing like they have the last two weeks, they’ll do well in the SD Open division and they’ll be back close to where they were.

Losing to Mission Hills is not a “really bad” loss… they are 8-1 and have a very good defense… 30-6 is bad but it was tied at the half… 6 turnovers make tight games look like blowouts… nice try by throwing Valencia in there as a team that is clearly better than Ramona… that is false…

Why is Clayton Valley #1 for D2 North?

    • Mark Tennis
      Posted November 5, 2013 at 7:51 am | Permalink

They were good last year, they played DLS right off the bat and showed well and early in the season there were no other teams that looked that great. Their schedule is horrible, but if they win the NCS D2 title it won’t be. Strength of schedule isn’t just about who you have played but who you are going to have to play later on to get bowl eligible.

If inderkum wins out do they get in even if Casa and enterprise win out? There two loses is to D1 teams

    • Mark Tennis
      Posted November 5, 2013 at 7:49 am | Permalink

The question in that case wouldn’t be between Casa Grande and Inderkum but Inderkum and Enterprise. As an unbeaten NCS D2 champ, Casa is in. For Inderkum, it partly depends on how the two teams it lost to do in the playoffs. Pleasant Grove going out early, for example, wouldn’t help. Enterprise also isn’t just winning games, its leaving no doubt. That would be a close call for sure.

Hi Mark, If Folsom wins SJ d1 and plays in the open division vs. DLS,who will play in state D1 ?

    • Mark Tennis
      Posted November 5, 2013 at 10:32 am | Permalink

I assume you mean the NorCal D1 bowl game, which would then be the CCS Open Division vs. the SJS champ from the other division that Folsom isn’t in. Still don’t know which section division Folsom will be in.

  7. Posted November 5, 2013 at 9:28 am | Permalink

Can I ask why teams with low strength of schedules like Folsom and DLS are rated above teams with higher SOS’s like SJ Bosco and Serra? Neither northern CA team has an out of state victory to speak of and played very suspect schedules overall yet you rank them #1 and #3. Just seems like teams that play in tougher leagues while also play out of state games are not being rewarded for doing so while also winning. I don’t get it.

    • Mark Tennis
      Posted November 5, 2013 at 10:30 am | Permalink

We value strength of schedule as well, but it is not the only criteria like you suggest. We do value what has happened last year and the year before. Some don’t agree with that, but it has proved to be true. Nearly every year a supposed SoCal team with a much higher strength of schedule plays DLS in a bowl game and not only has lost but often has been crushed. If we went only by strength of schedule, then DLS would never have been No. 1 entering those games. Since they’ve won almost every time, which system is more correct? We also tend to see the teams play. Computers don’t tend to see teams play.

DLS SOS before Open Division Bowl Game Played:

      38.8 41.0

      2011
      DLS Westlake
      38.6 36.9

      2010
      DLS Servite

Also, just so everyone knows Vista Murrieta should easily replace Crenshaw in the top 17. The Shaw played an overly ambitious schedule this year (I rate it is the #3 most difficult in the nation non-league) and got hammered. SJB put 75 on them and could have put 100. Vista Murrieta should be there not Crenshaw.

I too believe that Crenshaw is rated much too high… I get it, their losses are too very good football teams… but come on man 4 losses and still in the top 20? I could understand if they had beaten somebody good but look at the teams they are beating… plus I saw them in the summer and while they looked fast they were small at the skill/LB positions… I honestly do not think Crenshaw is a top 50 team in the state.. but that is one man’s opinion

Of the top 3 ranked in Division IV South, Christian (El Cajon) should be #1. The team is loaded & the offense scores in bunches. Christian destroyed Mission Prep (42-0). They played Mission Bay tight in their lone loss. Parker is undefeated, but take a closer look at Parker’s signature win (Olympian). The game was not even close through 3&1/4 qtrs. They got a lucky break w/a muffed punt, momentum changed & they won.
Rankings should shake up this weekend. Parker & Mission Prep both have tough road games (Santa Fe Christian & Bishop Diego).

If Clayton Valley wins out and is 12-1 with a SoS not that great, do they make the bowl games over teams such as Enterprise and Inderkum?

    • Mark Tennis
      Posted November 5, 2013 at 6:20 pm | Permalink

If that winning out includes a win potentially against Casa Grande (unbeaten), then the answer is yes. People voting in the room would be told by NCS commissioner Gil Lemmon that Clayton Valley’s only loss was to DLS. They can read the scores and they know that 34-14 isn’t bad at all. I predict Clayton Valley would win that vote. Its strength of schedule will be a lot better by then too.

      • mugsy1217
        Posted November 6, 2013 at 9:59 am | Permalink

Exactly. And Clayton Valley shouldn’t be punished for having to play some poor teams, they had limited choices on their schedule, they only got 4 home games and to do that they had to settle with some struggling schools. The only school they truly had a choice to play was dls and had to give up a home game to get them. When its all said and done you have to look at the good teams they played not the bad. If they win out with the only loss being to the number 1 team in the state on the road that is pretty darn good and should definitely be the choice again.

What are Edison (Fresno) chances of moving up in the rankings and getting an opportunity to play for the bowl game assuming they run the table? I know that other Central section teams have not fared well against teams from the south this year. But I believe this team has the athletes and speed to compete with their southern counterparts.

Assuming they run the table, I think Edison gets into the D1 South bowl game. That’s a big if because Bakersfield has been rolling. We already know San Diego isn’t going to have an undefeated team and neither will L.A. City.

They are very good, but indications are that CC will not be moved up to D3 North. And Mack looks like it will run the table in the OAL. Best bet now is a Mack-CC rematch for D4 North.

I personally think that would probably be the correct move, but there are just so many variables at play for that to happen. Depends on if there’s another unbeaten team in D3 North that could be a legit team (such as possibly Carmel) and it depends on the teams that become bowl eligible in the south. If a team like Christian of El Cajon or Parker of San Diego are on the board down in the south, then we’ll know that CC probably isn’t going to win 66-7 again and the commissioners may be more inclined to leave them in D4. Brian Vanderbeek of the Modesto Bee also says the section office is opposed to any move of CC to D3 so if the section doesn’t bring it up at the meeting I don’t know how it could happen.

Clayton Valley got some starters back this week and pounded a very good 8-1 Northgate team on the road 56-28. If they get completely healthy look out! Like Mark said you can’t bury a team for one bad showing especially when it’s a win against a 7-3 team in a rivalry game.

I wonder why the Northern Commissioners don’t use DLS and Folsom to there advantage..DLS in the Open and Folsom in DI (provided they both win section titles) that way the North could possibly send two of it’s best teams to State Bowl games , insread of just one of them.

The South could say the same thing with Bosco and Serra and what you describe kind of misses the point of the open division. If DLS and Folsom were to win those games, we would hear the outcry of Folsom fans about why their team isn’t No. 1 and too bad it couldn’t be decided on the field. In the open division, now with regional games, the No. 1 team in the state clearly is decided on the field where it should be.
