It was not known as of Wednesday afternoon if Oceanside High’s football team will be without longtime head football coach John Carroll in this week’s game against La Costa Canyon of Carlsbad.
Carroll was taken to Tri-City Medical Center on Tuesday with what was described in the San Diego Union-Tribune as “dizziness and slurred speech.”
Oceanside athletic director Dave Barrett, who we got to know well earlier this season during the two-day UT San Diego Honor Bowl, was with the coach when he was taken by ambulance to the hospital.
“John has a great staff, and if he can’t be there Friday, the guys are ready to step up,” Barrett told the Union-Tribune. “We may not know until Friday if he’ll be on the sideline. Ultimately, that decision will be made by the doctors and Peggy (his wife).”
Carroll started the season with 224 wins since 1987 and from 2004 to 2010 directed the Pirates to seven consecutive CIF San Diego Section titles.
