It’s a tough call for Division III, but St. John Bosco has one win that can’t be overlooked. The only CIF state champion ending No. 1 in its division (due to Open Division teams being higher) is Horizon in D5. We have top teams to watch for next year in this post as well.

The Santa Ana Mater Dei boys basketball team may have just defeated San Jose Archbishop Mitty in the first CIF Open Division state final, but Mitty has still ended No. 1 in its division in the final Cal-Hi Sports divisional state rankings.

Mitty is No. 1 in the final rankings in Division II with Mater Dei finishing No. 1 in Division I. It is the third straight season that Mitty has completed its season in the top position in its division. This time, losing in the Open Division final is the difference compared to winning the CIF Division II state title.

The other final No. 1 teams according to division are St. John Bosco of Bellflower (D3), Salesian of Richmond (D4) and Horizon Christian of San Diego (D5). Only Horizon won a CIF state title. The other two, like Mitty, were teams that lost in the open division.

Mark, don’t underestimate Sacred Heart Cathedral next year. Losing senior leadership in Herman Pratt and Khalil James will hurt, but Darrell Barbour teams always are in contention. Be on the lookout for incoming 6’4-6’5 freshman Alfred Hollins. PG Deondre Otis can only get better. David Parson is a consistent scorer. Liam O’Reilly continues to improve.

With no Aaron Gordon next year, the WCAL should be up for grabs with Riordan leading the way and behind them SHC & Serra.

Riordan lost a great point guard and without his leadership it will be tough to say they will lead the way.

Ari Gold, what is even better is SI’s Trevor Dunbar’s brother Romello Dunbar is coming to SH. How is that for dinner conversation in that household:)

Riordan will finish in the middle by default. If SHC new twin towers and point guard really are as good as advertised, they’ll be in first place for a LONG time.

What’s the point of winning the state championship if you don’t get the top ranking out of it. You sir, are as full of excrement as a Christmas turkey.

That is the point. The open division teams clearly should be ranked higher. Thanks for commenting.

Individual honors are still two weeks or longer away from coming out. Players of year, coaches of year to come out first. All-state nominees coming in the next two days.
