All-State Football: Second, Third Teams

USC-bound Justin Davis didn't put up the numbers like he did as a junior, but ended his career with a state record book worthy total of 85 touchdowns. He has already graduated and is attending school in L.A.

Note: Congratulations to these 30 players who have been selected all-state football second team overall plus 60 more players who have been honored as third team all-state. If you’re on any of these teams, you are all-state. Like the first team, the second team is without any school size or year in school qualifications, which means juniors and others can make it. For third team, however, it’s for seniors only and large schools only. We do this because we have small school and medium school all-state teams as well as sophomores and juniors and it wouldn’t be fair to seniors from large schools for any of those players to be chosen again. This is the 34th year of Cal-Hi Sports all-state teams in football. We look forward to the 35th.

Once again Imperial County Schools are left out. Kid’s are going to play all over the Country from this isolate area. Had a couple make it to the NFL in recent years. Royce Freeman was a “Top” RB this year and will be one of California’s top RB’s next year. Kid is a beast…expect for the list to grow in the coming years. Considering the Pop. of I.C. is only 180,000 people. Baseball is sending kid’s to numerous college’s and the minor’s . Sergio Romo and Rudy Seanez are recent pro’s to come out of this area. Softball is top’s in this area. Look up Amber Flores,,,,you’ll see what I mean.

Royce Freeman was all-state underclass first team and we featured Amber Flores as an athlete of the week last spring. Other than Freeman (who we did choose and is all-state), not sure who else from Imperial County should have been that highly considered.

    Mikie-

Royce Freeman was named to the 1st team “Medium Schools” list posted on Saturday. He got his recognition for his terrific season.

Sorry, but Amber Flores was in her first year of coaching at DI Stoney Brook, N.Y. She graduating from Oklahoma in 2010. Another one missed was Minnesota’s starting free Safety Cedric Thompson out of Calipatria High (2011). Keep an eye out for Brawley’s Donavan Buck out of Brawley as a defensive end.

It was Heather Morales of Indio who was a state athlete of the week last spring. Softball also is tops everywhere in California. No state in the nation comes close. As for Donavin, he also was on the all-state junior list (3rd team). Look forward to seeing how he does at spring combines and camps.

Can you please explain how you left Iman Marshall off your list. He was the best corner on one of the top defensive units in Ca. Game in and out he defended the teams top receiver, and more then held his own. He held three of your all state performers without a td (Duarte, Redfield and Ross) and for the season, only gave up one score (Bakersfield). Iman helped lead his team to a Pac5 championship and appearance in the state game. Individually, Iman made All league (Moore) (1st team), Press-Telegram Dream team (1st team), All CIF (1st team), also first team for Maxprep Sophomore All American team (1st). I believe the omission by Calhi is glaring and Iman has proven that he should be up for All State consideration.

Iman already was named to the all-state sophomore team. Sophomores also aren’t eligible for the third team. If you read the note at the beginning, you’d know that. We also already have John Smith, Brown and Wicks named to all-state. Marshall would have been team’s fourth player and would have had to have been at least second team, which is a direction we didn’t go. You don’t have to argue that he’s not a great talent. We know. We saw many of those games, too. Poly, after all, did lose one game 56-0 and didn’t win CIF bowl game. There’s only so many players off a team like that who can make it.

    What about Kevin Palma?

    • Posted January 30, 2013 at 11:30 pm | Permalink

He was named to the all-state team for medium schools. We even ran his photo. He’s all-state, too. First team medium schools to us is same as third team on this list.

Thanks for the response. So I guess you thought Palma stood out more at tight end than at LB?

  9. Posted January 31, 2013 at 9:24 am | Permalink

He also just fit better onto that team as a tight end. Had some other linebackers we ended up wanting to get onto the squad as well.
