Week 13: SoCal CIF Bowl Rankings

Khalil Rashad Brown, Keishawn Bierria and Johnell Jackson are three of the top players for Narbonne, which is looking strong in L.A. City playoffs and is on track to play in first CIF Southern California Open Division bowl game.

Edison, Chaminade, Lompoc and Serra may be about to pass Oceanside in D2 but we’re still going to wait one more week to see what happens. Go to our Twitter page @CalHiSports for game reports and check our Facebook page for more highlights.

Note: The top 10 teams that would be ranked by CalHiSports.com for the CIF Open Division in Southern California would be:

1. Narbonne (Harbor City); 2. Vista Murrieta (Murrieta); 3. St. John Bosco (Bellflower); 4. St. Bonaventure (Ventura); 5. Mater Dei (Santa Ana); 6. Centennial (Corona); 7. Upland; 8. Crenshaw (Los Angeles); 9. Oceanside; 10. Edison (Huntington Beach).

With assistance from Harold Abend and Paul Muyskens, here are the Week 13 rankings for each of Southern California’s CIF bowl game divisions (previous ranking in parentheses; after games of Saturday, Nov. 17):

DIVISION I SOUTH
1. (1) Narbonne (Harbor City) 12-0
2. (2) Vista Murrieta (Murrieta) 12-0
3. (4) St. John Bosco (Bellflower) 12-0*
4. (5) St. Bonaventure (Ventura) 11-1
5. (6) Mater Dei (Santa Ana) 10-2
6. (7) Centennial (Corona) 11-1
7. (8) Upland 12-0
8. (10) Crenshaw (Los Angeles) 10-1**
9. (NR) Long Beach Poly (Long Beach) 9-3
10. (3) Mission Viejo 11-1
11. (9) Santa Margarita (Rancho SM) 9-3
12. (11) Alemany (Mission Hills) 9-3
13. (12) Notre Dame (Sherman Oaks) 8-4
14. (NR) Oaks Christian (Westlake Village) 8-3
15. (NR) Clovis North (Clovis) 10-1
*Does not include forfeit losses.
**Does not include default win.
Drops: Previous No. 13 Murrieta Valley (Murrieta) lost to Centennial (Corona) 72-35; No. 14 Clovis lost to Liberty (Bakersfield) 25-23; No. 15 Mission Hills (San Marcos) 9-2 was placed 16th this week.
Bubble Teams: Bishop Amat (La Puente) 7-3-1*, Central (Fresno) 10-2, Clovis 9-2*, Chaparral (Temecula) 7-4*, Charter Oak (Covina) 10-2*, Crespi (Encino) 8-2*, Edison (Fresno) 9-3, El Toro (Lake Forest) 9-2*, Liberty (Bakersfield) 8-4, Mission Hills (San Marcos) 9-2, Moorpark 8-3*, Murrieta Valley (Murrieta) 10-2*, Rancho Cucamonga 10-2, Tesoro (Rancho Santa Margarita) 7-4*, Westlake (Westlake Village) 6-5*.
*Indicates season complete.
No. 1 Team Result: Narbonne defeated Garfield (Los Angeles) 45-0.
Race for No. 1: It wasn’t the win over Garfield that further cemented Narbonne’s status as the No. 1 team in this division. It was more that Long Beach Poly beat Mission Viejo, that Mater Dei beat Alemany and that Gardena Serra advanced to a showdown against Lompoc. All three of those teams have lost to the Gauchos, including Poly by 56-0. Those wins can only get stronger, too. Narbonne, of course, has to keep winning and it looks like a possible L.A. City final against Crenshaw may be difficult…..
*Perhaps the most intriguing choice that the CIF commissioners will be making on Selection Sunday would be if St. John Bosco wins the CIFSS Pac-Five crown and if Vista Murrieta were to win the CIFSS Inland Division. Would the vote for the Open Division actually go to Bosco with four forfeit losses over a Vista team that at that point would be 14-0 with 28 straight wins on the field and led by Su’a Cravens, one of the best players in the nation? Yes, we could see that happening and while the Broncos would still get to keep playing in Division I the negative reaction from the Inland Empire might even be stronger than last year when they were snubbed for two-loss Santa Margarita…..
*The easiest scenario for Selection Sunday involving these top teams would be if St. Bonaventure won the Pac-Five crown in combination with Corona Centennial taking it all in the Inland Division. If that were to happen, St. Bonaventure’s earlier 40-35 win over the Huskies would take precedent and that would put the Seraphs in the Open Division and Centennial in Division I……
*Another impact of Long Beach Poly’s upset of Mission Viejo is that it should help the CIF Central Section Division I champ have an edge over the CIF San Diego Section Division I champ for that last Division I bowl berth in the south. That’s because one of Poly’s losses was to Bakersfield of the Central Section while one of Mission Hills’ losses was to Mission Viejo. Mission Hills looks like the favorite in that San Diego bracket but now doesn’t look like a favorite if it’s going up against Clovis North for a vote. Clovis North does have a loss to Clovis in a close game, but beat Central of Fresno 50-7 and Central is the team that just knocked out Bakersfield…..

DIVISION II SOUTH
1. (1) Oceanside 10-1
2. (2) Edison (Huntington Beach) 11-1
3. (3) Chaminade (West Hills) 11-1
4. (4) Lompoc 12-0
5. (5) Serra (Gardena) 10-2
6. (6) Tustin 12-0
7. (7) Citrus Hill (Perris) 12-0
8. (9) Serrano (Phelan) 12-0
9. (10) Helix (La Mesa) 9-1*
10. (11) La Serna (Whittier) 11-1
11. (15) Carter (Rialto) 12-0
12. (14) Olympian (Chula Vista) 11-0
13. (13) Garces (Bakersfield) 10-1
14. (NR) Palos Verdes (PV Estates) 9-3
15. (NR) Poway 9-2
*Win by forfeit not included.
Drops: Previous No. 8 Cathedral Catholic (San Diego) forfeited all wins due to use of ineligible player; No. 12 La Mirada lost to Santa Fe (Santa Fe Springs) 27-26.
Bubble Teams: Cathedral (Los Angeles) 10-2, Foothill (Tustin) 10-2, Heritage (Menifee) 11-1, Sanger 9-2, Santa Fe (Santa Fe Springs) 8-4*, Valencia 9-3, Villa Park 11-1, West (Torrance) 9-3.
*Win by forfeit not included.
No. 1 Result: Oceanside defeated Hilltop (Chula Vista) 50-0 in CIF San Diego Section Division II quarterfinals.
Race for No. 1: As the last few weeks have gone by, even as Oceanside is crushing opponents with ease, it’s as if the Pirates’ lead over the others in this field has been whittled down to a hair. And next week the on-rushing tide just may not be able to be stopped….
The continuing source of Oceanside’s problem is its 40-30 loss from early in the season to Chaparral of Temecula. At the time, Chaparral was placed higher in the state top 25 and the Pirates were not dropped out. Since then, Chaparral has finished on a downer, losing in its first CIFSS Inland Division game to Charter Oak…..
*As of this week’s rankings, Edison, Chaminade, Lompoc, Gardena Serra and Tustin are all behind Oceanside. Next week, if Edison keeps winning and if Mater Dei (only team that Edison has lost to) beats St. Bonaventure, there’s no doubt that Edison goes in front of Oceanside. The eventual winner of the CIFSS Western Division (either Chaminade, Lompoc or Serra) also may have to go higher as well, especially since Serra has a win over Long Beach Poly. Keep in mind that Tustin could be Edison’s opponent in the CIFSS Southwest Division final and could end up 14-0. Oceanside definitely needs Mission Hills (a team it beat) to win the San Diego D1 title and also needs to post decisive wins in its last two games even to have a chance at holding off the others….
*One CIFSS division that also deserves attention is the Eastern. This is the bracket that will feature 12-0 Serrano vs. 12-0 Carter in one semifinal this weekend with 12-0 Citrus Hill in the other against 9-3 Tahquitz of Hemet. The only reason that a potential 14-0 from that division probably won’t get a bowl game is strength of schedule, especially compared to teams from the Western Division and Southwest…..

DIVISION III SOUTH
1. (1) Paraclete (Lancaster) 11-1
2. (2) St. Augustine (San Diego) 9-2*
3. (3) Monrovia 10-2
4. (4) Wasco 11-0
5. (5) Madison (San Diego) 10-1
6. (6) Nordhoff (Ojai) 11-1
7. (7) Laguna Beach 11-0-1
8. (8) San Dimas 11-1
9. (9) Mission Oak (Tulare) 9-2
10. (10) Brawley 10-1
*Forfeit win not included.
Drops: None.
Bubble Teams: Banning 11-1, Corona del Mar (Newport Beach) 9-3*, Garden Grove 10-2, Jurupa Hills (Fontana) 8-4, North (Torrance) 10-2, San Marino 10-2**, Rim of the World (Lake Arrowhead) 10-2, Salesian (Los Angeles) 11-1, Valley Center 7-4.
*Forfeit win not included. **Indicates season complete.
No. 1 Team Result: Paraclete defeated El Monte 56-16 in CIF Southern Section Mid-Valley Division quarterfinals.
Race for No. 1: An amazing thing that happened for teams in this division last weekend is that every ranked team won (all in section playoff games) and that the only team even on the bubble that lost was San Marino and its loss was to higher-ranked San Dimas…..
*Paraclete will play San Dimas in this week’s CIFSS Mid-Valley Division semis and then would face either Monrovia or Sierra Canyon (ranked No. 2 in D4 South) in the championship game….
*If Paraclete does win its section title, we think the other CIF D3 South bowl bid will likely come down to the San Diego D4 winner or the Central Section D4 winner. The fact that one of St. Augustine’s losses (the one to arch-rival Cathedral Catholic) has become a forfeit win could be important. Wasco continuing to blow out every team in its path also will be telling. And while Wasco doesn’t have strength of schedule, those who have seen the Tigers play say they are on par with many of the top large school teams in the section. Madison of San Diego and Brawley are two other ranked teams in St. Augustine’s section playoff while Wasco may be playing No. 9 Mission Oak in its section final…..

DIVISION IV SOUTH
1. (1) Bishop Diego (Santa Barbara) 12-0
2. (2) Sierra Canyon (Chatsworth) 11-1
3. (3) Ontario Christian 12-0
4. (4) Mission Prep (San Luis Obispo) 10-1
5. (5) Rio Hondo Prep (Arcadia) 10-1
6. (7) Santa Fe Christian (Solana Beach) 8-3
7. (9) Francis Parker (San Diego) 7-4
8. (10) Horizon (San Diego) 8-3
9. (NR) Christian (El Cajon) 8-3
10. (NR) Bakersfield Christian 9-2
Drops: Previous No. 6 St. Margaret’s (SJ Capistrano) lost to Rim of the World (Lake Arrowhead) 28-14; No. 8 La Jolla Country Day lost to Horizon (San Diego) 40-24.
Bubble Teams: Boron 10-2*, Calipatria 9-3*, Flintridge Prep (La Canada) 6-5*, La Jolla Country Day (La Jolla) 7-4*, St. Margaret’s (SJ Capistrano) 10-2*, Windward (Los Angeles) 5-4*.
*Indicates season complete. **Win by forfeit not included.
No. 1 Team Result: Bishop Diego defeated Village Christian (Sun Valley) 28-14.
Race for No. 1: St. Margaret’s loss to Rim of the World normally isn’t enough to drop a team out of the top 10, but all of the other ranked teams this week in this division are still going….
*Ontario Christian is still going in that CIFSS East Valley Division (the one that had St. Margaret’s) and could strengthen its case for a bowl bid by topping Jurupa Hills of Fontana in this week’s semis and then either Rim of the World or Banning in the final. All three of those other teams are D3 South for the bowl games due to enrollment…..
*Bishop Diego, however, is going to have to play bigger schools the rest of the way as well. The Cardinals play North of Torrance in the CIFSS Northwest Division semis and would then play either Nordhoff of Ojai or Centennial of Compton in the final…..
*For defending CIF D4 state champ Sierra Canyon, which has lost only to Paraclete of Lancaster, its dream of being able to play in more bowl games will be put a huge test in this week’s CIFSS Mid-Valley semis against Monrovia. If the Trailblazers win, they might get Paraclete again in the final and if both of those things happen it’s going to be pretty tough for the boys not to get one of those two bowl berths…..

If Serra wins out with 2 losses, and Oceanside with 1, at what point does a loss get counted as a loss ? Meaning, if both teams had 1 loss, then it makes sense to give edge to Serra for they lost to a team that went further than Oceanside. But that 2nd loss regardless of how well that team did, should not benefit them (still 1 more loss). Example, 1 guy gets rejected by 2 woman, and 1 guy by 1 woman, but the guy who was rejected by 2 woman, is not the loser because the 2nd woman was much better looking than the other guys 1 woman ? When does a loss get treated as one, is it 3 losses ?

I can honestly say I’ve never thought of this in terms of guys being rejected by women. But I will go with it because would not the value of the women change over time? The value of losses in your example is impacted by time. In your scenario, if Serra were to win out with two losses, one of the wins probably would be against Chaminade and that would avenge one of the two previous losses. It’s too simple just to go strictly by a won-loss record because each team is continually connected to the other teams it has beaten or lost to.

If O’side were to win CIF, there is no doubt they would be chosen for D2 SoCal regional. There’s no way commissioners can ignore a championship tradition/history regardless with that one loss. Having SD’s best (whoever it is) vs the SS should lay to rest any doubts about the high level of competition here in SD. To down talk about a storied program such as O’side is ignorance, (referring to commenters, not the editors of this site) and usually from individuals who’s team is a once in a lifetime contender.
    Thank You

They won’t ignore that tradition and history, but I would caution anyone from Oceanside about having “no doubt” about what could happen. The Southern Section people in the room probably will be able to make a very strong case that the SoCal D2 game match the CIFSS Western Division and Southwest Division winners.

The woman thing was just an example as silly as it sounds. The word avenge, yes, it would be from a pyshcological perspective, but, the loss still shows on the record i.e the revenge aspect does not erase the past and loss. There is a point when more losses represent more losses, and I believe that should be when it is more than the others teams losses when comparing teams that are all good at this level. Just my opinion.

If San Dimas wins this week and then wins mid valley , they should be right there vs Saint Augy. Strength of schedule.

Of course all commisioners will make a good argument, for it is human nature, it is male ego, and it is ecomomics to some degree. Edison is riding on how well Mater Dei does, and Oceanside is riding on the fact that it is pure domination that represents the tally mark for their wins. Serra has 2 losses. 2 losses is worst than 1 loss. Chaminade is a one time wonder. If it goes beyond won-loss, then all these perspective must be seen from all perspectives………….

Edison is getting way too much credit for losing to MD early in the season… They have looked average at best against average at best competition…

Just a question. Since the Southern Section has a lot of divisions, would the section actually consider two Southern Section champions to play each other in a So-Cal bowl?

Sorry, I meant would the CIF consider it? (i.e Pac-5 Champ vs. Inland champ)

    • Posted November 21, 2012 at 11:29 pm | Permalink

Last year, the SoCal Open Division bowl game probably would have been Westlake vs. Santa Margarita so yes the CIF commissioners definitely would consider two teams from the same section playing each other in one of these contests.

Lompoc is done after their first real test in almost 2 years.
Edison and Oside struggled to get W’s this week. Serra beat Lompoc who looks like they had a pretty solid team but lacked something. Nade won easily as expected against a good but not great Cathedral team. Poly and MD are in the Pac5 finals, Serra beat Poly while Edison lost a close game to MD team and Chaminade beat Serra. Where will that leave us?

The key to me is Serra Beat Poly, they didnt lose to Poly in a close game.

Serra should jump Edison and Oceanside who lost to a good but not great team. Chaminade has to be in front of Serra based on their head to head win.

The biggest game in the state D2 division this year will be this week when Nade plays at Serra.

Just a bid for Oceanside. Did you know that they have made the playoffs in 26 consecutive years? That in itself is a true testament to how well they are coached and how deserving they are of a birth. San Diego is finally getting some recognition. If you look at Oceanside’s history vs. Orange County teams, they have faired well. They have split with Mater Dei in ’87 and ’88. They have beaten Capo Valley. They have beaten Fountain Valley, and split with San Clemente. They have split with Long Beach Poly and with Servite. So history proves that this school can compete with the teams from up North, let alone win in the state championship. You want the best teams in this game and Oceanside has proven to be one of them!!!

Its pretty pathetic to me when teams have to rely on 26 years of past history to try and define their current team. Let your boys stand on their own and be judged on what THEY have achieved. Late 80’s you have to be joking right?

This is a huge issue I have with the way Calhisports rates teams.

Not to mention that they have beaten San Gorgonio and Santa Barbara during the late 80’s.

Doesn’t enrollment have anything to do with a level playing field? I was just comparing some of the schools in the small schools divisions and was wondering why a school with an enrollment of 2100+ would be thrown in against schools one third of their enrollment.
Kinda like the U.S. declaring war on small countries.

    • Posted November 26, 2012 at 8:52 am | Permalink

Unfortunately, it doesn’t. There are actually schools that are D3 South from the CIFSS that have more than 3,000 students. Those schools aren’t that good at football, though. The only enrollment total to really pay attention to for the bowl games is 500 because that is the cutoff between D4 and D3. Some sections still use enrollment totals to decide divisions, but the CIFSS does not.

All of these teams have had great seasons! The fact remains that a 1-loss champion should not be overlooked by a 2-loss champion. We shouldn’t be looking at school history, other than what it speaks for the program. It’s what has been done this season. These teams have dominated their perspective leagues, but in the end 1 is better than 2! Oceanside deserves that bid! They’ve proven in the past that when invited they not only compete – they win!
