Top 25 Weekend Scoreboard

Long Beach Poly shocks SoCal with win over No. 4 Mission Viejo, but the only other State Top 25 team from last week to lose to a lower-ranked foe is No. 25 Clovis. You can now vote too to help determine next week’s highest-rising newcomer.

Here is a look at scores through Saturday, Nov. 17. Compiled by Paul Muyskens with comments from editor Mark Tennis. Go to our Twitter page @CalHiSports for info on games we have attended. Go to our Facebook page for more updates.

1. DE LA SALLE (CONCORD) 11-0
Defeated Pittsburg 35-13 and have advanced to 29th consecutive CIF North Coast Section semifinal. It was 14-7 at the half, but give Spartans credit since Pirates were coming in after impressive showing against Danville Monte Vista.

2. NARBONNE (HARBOR CITY) 12-0
Defeated Garfield (Los Angeles) 45-0. Gauchos also cement top ranking for SoCal with No. 4 Mission Viejo losing to a Long Beach Poly team they beat 56-0. Plus, Mater Dei (another team they’ve beaten) makes it to the CIFSS Pac-Five semis as well.

3. VISTA MURRIETA (MURRIETA) 12-0
Defeated Norco 31-16. Not a great margin for the Broncos, but Mission Viejo is now done, which helps odds of them getting CIF SoCal Open Division bowl bid.

4. MISSION VIEJO 11-1
Lost to Long Beach Poly 21-16. This upset was shocking for many reasons, one of which is that the Jackrabbits have been a team the Diablos have owned in recent matchups. Sometimes, though, kids and coaches just step up.

5. ST. JOHN BOSCO (BELLFLOWER) 12-0*
Defeated No. 22 Notre Dame (Sherman Oaks) 24-17. Remember, Braves have four forfeit losses. They took lead against ND on diving touchdown with 1:19 left by Darren Walker.

6. ST. BONAVENTURE (VENTURA) 11-1
Defeated No. 12 Santa Margarita (Rancho SM) 27-21 (OT). This avenges the Seraphs’ only loss. They play No. 7 Mater Dei next in CIFSS Pac-Five semis.

7. MATER DEI (SANTA ANA) 10-2
Defeated No. 20 Alemany (Mission Hills) 53-42. After missing the playoffs last year, the Monarchs are now just one win away from getting to CIFSS Pac-Five championship.

8. CENTENNIAL (CORONA) 11-1
Defeated No. 23 Murrieta Valley (Murrieta) 72-35. Scoring more than 70 points against a team that was 10-1? It’s more the norm than unusual for the Huskies.

9. FRANKLIN (ELK GROVE) 12-0
Defeated Lincoln (Stockton) 42-6. Kyran Harris broke Lincoln’s back with 65-yard TD run in second quarter. A strong outing against team that ended Franklin’s season last year and had won 52-7 last week.

10. FOLSOM 12-0
Defeated Vacaville 49-13. Jake Browning with five touchdown passes in the win on Saturday night.

11. UPLAND 12-0
Defeated Redlands 28-14. Highlanders advance to huge test next week against No. 8 Corona Centennial in CIFSS Inland Division semis. It will be a meeting of two top 10 state-ranked teams.

12. SANTA MARGARITA (RANCHO SM) 9-3
Lost to No. 6 St. Bonaventure (Ventura) 27-21 (OT). Coach Harry Welch’s team played well against team that was seeded No. 1 in CIFSS Pac-Five division. Still, a “what if” season for the Eagles and we all know what the “what if” refers to.

13. BELLARMINE (SAN JOSE) 10-1
Defeated Terra Nova (Pacifica) 33-14. The Bells start their quest for a fourth CCS Open Division title in the last five years by topping the Tigers, who really shouldn’t have to be playing in the Open Division.

14. OCEANSIDE 10-1
Defeated Hilltop (Chula Vista) 50-0. This was essentially a first-round section playoff blowout game for the Pirates.

15. CRENSHAW (LOS ANGELES) 10-1**
Defeated Dorsey (Los Angeles) 56-6. The Cougars were up 35-0 in the second quarter against a rival that usually gives them some trouble. This win also shows that No. 2 Narbonne may not cake-walk its way all the way through the CIF L.A. City Section final after all.

16. ELK GROVE 11-1
Defeated Del Campo (Fair Oaks) 35-14. Earlier in the season, the Thundering Herd only beat Del Campo 20-16.

17. EDISON (HUNTINGTON BEACH) 11-1
Defeated Valencia (Placentia) 52-14. Mater Dei’s win over Alemany also is good news for the Chargers, who lost their only game to the Monarchs.

18. CHAMINADE (WEST HILLS) 11-1
Defeated Morro Bay 61-7. You can pretty much pencil in the Eagles into the CIFSS Western Division final in two weeks. Not only did they roll but league rival Cathedral (a team they beat 62-26 two weeks ago) knocked out higher-seeded Camarillo and will be their opponent in next week’s semis.

19. LOMPOC 12-0
Defeated Culver City 49-6. Make it 32 straight wins for the Braves, who will step into a frying pan next week to play No. 21 Serra of Gardena in the CIFSS Western Division semis.

20. ALEMANY (MISSION HILLS) 9-3
Lost to No. 7 Mater Dei (Santa Ana) 53-42. The offensive firepower of the Warriors is hard to beat, but for the program to step up to an even higher level in the future the defense will need to be stronger.

21. SERRA (GARDENA) 10-2
Defeated Santa Monica 58-6. The Cavs will try to end Lompoc’s 32-game win streak next week. They also will benefit in the next rankings from Long Beach Poly’s win over Mission Viejo since they have a win over the Jackrabbits in September.

22. NOTRE DAME (SHERMAN OAKS) 8-4
Lost to No. 5 St. John Bosco (Bellflower) 24-17. This close loss probably ensures a final top 25 ranking for the Knights, but they may have to drop down for a few weeks to make room for other teams still going.

23. BURBANK (SACRAMENTO) 12-0
Defeated Pleasant Grove (Elk Grove) 32-27. With the win on Saturday they will play 11-1 Oak Ridge of El Dorado Hills in next week’s CIFSJS Division I semifinals.

24. MURRIETA VALLEY (MURRIETA) 10-2
Lost to No. 8 Centennial (Corona) 72-35. Yes, sometimes we do put a team in the Top 25 to in a sense cover ourselves for the upset. It was still a strong season for the team, which got blown out as well by Vista Murrieta but posted a win against Chaparral.

25. CLOVIS 9-2
Lost to Liberty (Bakersfield) 25-23. The CIF Central Section gets thrown into a loop again. Central of Fresno and Clovis North are still going and pretty obvious which one of those two should be higher since CN beat Central 50-7 in October.

I expect Elk Grove to drop way down next week as Del Oro and Brandon Monroe will take them out,.

Franklin may drop as well to Granite Bay.

Both DO and GB lost big to Oaks so I would expect those two teams to drop out completely after this week i9f that happens.

No one up here would be surprised that much if GB and Del Oro win those games. Both are definitely much better now than early but obviously those early results still count.Franklin also is much better than earlier and really does have chance to be a worthy for against DLS in NorCal Open division.

This is a hypothetical question Mr. Tennis. If LB Poly wins the PAC-5 with their win/lose record, will that give Chaminade a possible chance at the Open Bowl ? Or are they going to hold the D-II division as a label to put a weaker D-1 team over them ?

    • Posted November 18, 2012 at 2:07 pm | Permalink

If Narbonne and Vista Murruetta win out, Chaminade wouldn’t be in the mix. I think Corona Centennial would be in front of Chaminade in your scenario as well.

You lost me there? What Scenario?
Chaminade not in the mix for what?

        Narbonne , VM, Corona Centennial?

I see what you guys are saying now, but if CC and VM play in the Inland final do you really think they would have the same 2 teams play again the following week in the regional?

        • Posted November 19, 2012 at 4:34 pm | Permalink

No, they wouldn’t. The loser is done for the season. The winner would move on to either Open Division or Division I. The question was about the chances of the CIFSS Western Division champion getting into the open division discussion. I just don’t see it. Even if Poly were to win the Pac-Five, the L.A. City and Inland Division would probably play in the Open Division unless something really strange were to happen. The Western Division champ can’t move up to Division I, either. Those berths are set in stone.

Narbonne loses in City section, Poly wins the Pac5, Chaminade wins the Western, Edison wins out, Oceanside wins out, who would be in the open regional against CC or VM?

Crenshaw wins out they have a good case also right?

        • Posted November 19, 2012 at 11:44 pm | Permalink

You answered your own question unless Carson does the unthinkable this week. Crenshaw would clearly have the edge in that scenario if it was the one to upset Narbonne for reasons I wrote earlier.

How can you overlook Menifee Heritage?
10-, 3 straight undefeated League titles, and Divisional Semis for 3rd straight year..get some of these 3 and 4 loss teams outta here.. C’mon man

      Posted November 24, 2012 at 3:30 pm | Permalink

You are kidding, right? Heritage? Those kids could not compete with any of the 3 or 4 loss teams. Look at the quality of players and competition that Heritage faces. Don’t get me wrong, not questioning the heart of the kids or coaches they just can’t compete. How about you guys step up and play VMHS in the preseason if you want to play with the big boys.

American Canyon in D3..Watch out…3 words..Fast, Faster, Faster Still..Ok 4 words..On BOTH sides of the ball..No one in the SJS D1 will be able to stay with DLS so who cares there…Don’t know how Burbank Titans are still in it..Must be just a weak Division this year..Heck they only lost to Napa 14-7. To Napa’s credit, of their 11 games, 5 of the teams have all won 2nd round playoff games. The only one they beat was Casa Grande of Petaluma..Burbank is a JV team playing way out of their heads…Reality will catch up with them next weekend..

What’s with the San Diego Section? They bounced Cathedral Catholic from the playoffs for having an alleged inelgible player on their team and imposed forfeits on all of the Dons’ wins for 2012. A couple of years ago SDS tried to do a number on Madison for a similiar situation. They even used SDS funds to hire a private eye to investigate the Madison player in question’s family.

Even if Cathedral Catholic isn’t guilty in regards to the player, I know they are guilty of using illegal video review during a live contest. Why didn’t anyone notice that? That’s cheating!

There was a question about Chaminade’s possibility to be in the Open Division. Looks like it was in a different thread. Sorry.

If Narbonne loses and LB Poly wins Pac-5 (both possible), IMO the next logic team to face Centennial/VM would be Chaminade/Serra (they beat LB Poly) due to LB Poly’s number of losses in Open Bowl Playoffs ?

    • Posted November 19, 2012 at 4:28 pm | Permalink

Yes, but if Narbonne loses it would almost have to be to Crenshaw and Crenshaw would have to be in front of Chaminade/Serra in that scenario due to having a win over Narbonne (Serra lost to Narbonne) and due to having a win over Oaks Christian (Chaminade has a loss to Oaks Christian).

If a 2 loss Serra teams wins out, does the 2 loses (Chaminade,Narbonne) hurt them against a 1 loss Oceanside ? Granted 2 teams in Nade and Narbonne that has gone further than Chap, but does those 2 losses count as 2 in relation to Oside’s 1.

  11. Posted November 19, 2012 at 5:08 pm | Permalink

No, in that scenario, Serra probably would have avenged one of its losses and clearly having a win over Long Beach Poly would cancel out Oceanside having just one loss. We don’t like dropping teams that continue to win, which is why Oceanside is still ranked higher than Edison, Chaminade and Serra. But eventually if things keep going the way they’ve been I think Oceanside is going to get hopped by the CIFSS Western Division winner and possibly the CIFSS Southwest Division winner (if Edison or Tustin).
