NEW State Girls VB Top 20

Seniors Justine Limon and Maycie LaBass are two of the top players for No. 17 Gregori of Modesto. Limon flies all over the court getting to balls while LaBass is a powerful presence up front headed to Pacific. Having the same logo and colors as the Jacksonville Jaguars, however, might not bring one confidence. Photo: Mark Tennis.

Santa Barbara TOC this weekend offers one last chance to shake up the state’s pecking order before the start of the playoffs. No. 1 Torrey Pines, No. 4 Dana Hills and No. 6 Valley Christian are among the field.

It’s probably a good thing that Mater Dei of Santa Ana is not among the teams in this weekend’s Santa Barbara Tournament of Champions because the way the Monarchs have been bouncing up and down the rankings they’d likely win it.

Mater Dei was up early in the season after winning the Dave Mohs Memorial Tournament, but then suffered some losses at the Durango Classic in Las Vegas. The team won its second major invitational earlier this month and handed state No. 1 Torrey Pines its only loss at the Asics Challenge at Torrey Pines. After that result, the Monarchs went up to No. 4 in the state and went up to No. 2 last week due to other teams losing.

This week, the pendulum swung back the other way for Mater Dei. A Trinity League loss to Lutheran of Orange has dropped the Monarchs back down to No. 10. That loss also helped Granite Bay move up from No. 3 to No. 2.

In last year’s Santa Barbara TOC, Archbishop Mitty of San Jose came in with an unbeaten record and left with a tourney title. Since the Monarchs are Division II for the state and NorCal playoffs, it gave them a chance to beat many teams that were going to be Division I. They did, they went on to complete a perfect season and they are considered the Student Sports FAB 50 National Team of the Year.

Torrey Pines enters this year’s tourney as the top seed and No. 1 team in the state. Mitty is back in an attempt to win it again and will be joined by West Catholic Athletic League rival Valley Christian of San Jose, which defeated the Monarchs two weeks ago. In this week’s Top 20 for the state, Valley Christian is No. 6 and Mitty is No. 7.

Orange Lutheran, meanwhile, was the only newcomer to this week’s state rankings. Beating Mater Dei forced the Lancers to go back in. They were replacements for previous No. 20 Sacred Heart Cathedral of San Francisco. The Irish normally wouldn’t drop out for losing a match to Mitty, but no other teams were reported with a loss and someone had to fall out to make room for Orange Lutheran.

[…] For the first time since we started the Bay Area rankings this season, there were no changes this week. In fact, with the exception of St. Francis losing to Mitty, none of the other top teams faced a ranked opponent in league action and there were no upsets.
