The 42nd annual Cal-Hi Sports All-State Softball teams goes from juniors and sophomores from two days ago to the top players from what we deem medium & small schools. All the years of doing this work also helps determine which are medium & small but almost all teams in a top CIF section divisional playoff are considered large. Both the small schools and medium schools have a first and second team all-state and remember these are position specific. The final, overall all-state teams are still to come.

Eight players have repeated for this year’s first team all-state medium schools softball honors. For small schools, there are five who have repeated on first team.
This year’s medium schools player of the year, Abi Jones of Salinas, who led her team to the CIF NorCal D2 regional championship, is one of those eight. Two of the others also were in those same playoffs — state junior of the year Ayla Tuua of Sacramento Destiny Christian and 2024 state medium schools player of the year Lila Partridge from Casa Grande of Petaluma. Jones will play next at Grand Canyon, Tuua has committed to LSU and Partridge is headed to play at Kansas.

Ella Myers of Monterey is the two-time player of the year by the Monterey Herald. She will play next at UC Santa Barbara. Photo: Mark Tennis.
Two of the other eight repeaters on first team all-state medium schools, Jazmine Leyva from South El Monte and Brianah Alejandre from Los Altos of Hacienda Heights, are going to be teammates at UCLA. The other repeaters on first team are Izzy Cacatian from South of Torrance, Callie Howard from Cardinal Newman of Santa Rosa and Ella Myers of Monterey. Cacatian, who has signed with Stanford, was listed last year at catcher and is on for this season as an infielder.
Keep in mind that any all-state medium or small school players also can still be selected to be final, overall elite top 30 first team all-state or second team (next 30).
For small schools, the first team repeaters are Leigha Wood from University Prep of Redding, Emjay Peck from Viewpoint of Calabasas, Audrina Rodriguez of Woodlake, Rebecca Milan from Swett of Crockett and Cayla Contreras from Coastal Academy of Oceanside. Rodriguez was previously named as the State Small Schools Player of the Year.
There also were players who moved up from small schools to medium schools. Pitcher Anabelle Hinojosa of Bakersfield Christian, who ended her career 56-7 with a 1.47 ERA and had 960 career strikeouts, was first team small schools last year and first team medium schools this year. Her teammate, catcher Cailee Carr, was first team small schools last year and second team medium schools this year.
Almost every school that was in a top divisional playoff in every CIF section was considered large schools, so there were a couple of CIF Southern Section traditional medium schools (examples Notre Dame of Sherman Oaks and El Segundo) that will have players on large this time and not medium.
All of these all-state teams are position specific and are not just a list of top 30 players. There has to be at least three outfielders on every team and that can be hard since the best athletes on most softball teams are playing on the infield. There also has to be at least two catchers and most of the time we are looking for three or more.
Final Note: Other than a few exceptions, schools that were eligible to be in the Cal-Hi Sports Division IV or Division V state rankings are considered small. Some teams that were D2 for the rankings were considered large and some considered medium. Those that were in Division III were all medium. In our system, some schools with large enrollments in lower playoff divisions are just too big to be small schools. There is no all-state large schools team, but there is a third team added to the overall teams in which only players from large schools and seniors are eligible.
