It doesn’t take much checking around to find that Franklin of Elk Grove catcher Brandon Williams (left) and Eastlake of Chula Vista outfielder Joel Vargas (right) are two of the top Class of 2028 baseball prospects in the state. Photos: Mark Tennis / Cal-Hi Sports & Instagram.com.
While a State Freshman Player of the Year is now named each year, there is not an all-state team for ninth graders. We’ve found there’s just too many top prospects/players from top programs that have not yet done that much on the high school level and these teams are based mostly on high school production/accomplishment. Still, here’s a look at top freshman baseball players around the state from the 2025 season who have great promise to be an all-state player very soon.

Notes: As mentioned in the other posts about all-state sophomores and all-state juniors, this is not a Class of 2028 recruiting list. These are all players listed below who “did something” in varsity games during the high school season. Other players will emerge down the road as they get more high school varsity playing time, especially at the stronger CIF Southern Section programs as well as the top programs in Northern California.
