First team all-state medium schools pitcher Erik Rico (left) fires a pitch for Redwood of Visalia. He has signed with Fresno State and has been one of the top hurlers in the CIF Central Section the past two seasons. At right, 6-foot-8 shortstop Theodore Anderson connects playing for Dunn School of Los Olivos. The intriguing Anderson (first team all-state small schools) has signed with St. Mary’s College. And besides, anytime we can get someone an honor from the Dunn Earwigs we’re going to do our best. Photos: X.com & keyt.com.
Here is the second group of honorees named to the 43rd annual Cal-Hi Sports All-State Baseball Teams. For today, it is players from medium & small schools. Which schools are medium and small can be confusing with competitive equity based playoffs, but our long experience in doing these teams means we know a medium and a small when we see them. We offer a first and second team for each and still have the final, overall all-state teams to present.

Our all-state patch for the 2025 baseball season will be similar to the one for previous years through our partners from BillyTees.com. Order this patch HERE.
One of the repeaters as first team all-state medium schools for the 2025 baseball season, catcher Brayden Jaksa from Irvington of Fremont, also is forecast to hear his name called possibly as high as the second round of Sunday’s MLB Draft. Jaksa, who also has signed with Oregon, was No. 65 in a Baseball America mock draft done last week. He was No. 77 by the same publication back in April.
Jaksa batted .433 this season with four home runs after hitting .437 last season with six homers. He stayed at Irvington throughout his high school career despite the team suffering in losing seasons. He still gained a lot of honors, but being a player of the year requires team accomplishments.
Another of the medium school repeaters, two-time Santa Rosa Press-Democrat Pitcher of the Year Josh Jannicelli from Cardinal Newman of Santa Rosa, also is forecast to be a top five round MLB Draft pick.
Others on medium school first team who also have already gained major local honors include Hunter Manning from West Ranch of Valencia, our State Medium Schools Player of the Year. Manning also has been named Co-Player of the Year by the L.A. Daily News. Devon Wilkes from Pacifica of Oxnard (Ventura County Player of the Year), Landyn Plaut of Lincoln (Sacramento Bee Medium Schools Player of the Year) and Landon Schutte of Oakdale (Modesto Bee Large Schools Player of Year) are others.
It can be easier to repeat as a first team all-state small schools honoree and we do once again have some. The list includes pitcher Blake Moore of California City, who previously has been named as our Small Schools State Player of the Year. The others to repeat are Landon Carter (Bradshaw Christian), Nash Horton (Watsonville St. Francis), Matt Maxon (Carmel), Kaden Nicholls (Bear River), Carter Tucker (Imperial), Brock Barrick (Kelseyville), Jerod Smith (Fowler) and Emmett Stacher(Etna). There also are players who have been small schools first or second team twice.
As a reminder, every all-state team selected has to have at least two catchers and at least three outfielders. Other than that, the numbers of pitchers, infielders and multi-purpose have no set totals. As an example, we went with four catchers on first team medium schools, two on second team medium schools, three on first team small schools and five on second team small schools. We have three outfielders (the minimum) on all of the medium, small schools teams for this season.
A player who was under consideration for the small schools teams, pitcher Angel Voller from Venture Academy of Stockton, tragically was a victim of the massive fireworks explosion and fire in Yolo County last week that also took the lives of six other people. Voller went 10-0 last season for the Mustangs with a 1.09 ERA and 63 strikeouts in 51 1/3 innings. “Angel was a fierce competitor and the most loyal friend and teammate you could ever ask for,” said the team on its Instagram page. He has been selected as an honorary member all-state small schools as a gesture to the school, team and family, but it is possible that he might have been on second team regardless.
Final Note: Other than a few exceptions, schools that were eligible to be in the Cal-Hi Sports Division IV or Division V state rankings are considered small. Some teams that were D2 for the rankings were considered large and some considered medium. Those that were in Division III state rankings were all medium. In our system, some schools with large enrollments in lower playoff divisions are just too big to be small schools. There is no all-state large schools team, but there is a third team added to the overall teams in which only players from large schools and seniors are eligible.

I noticed Ayden Deome’s name is misspelled (first team infield, medium schools).
Thanks for doing this list!
