Current state No. 2 Granite Hills has won CIF San Diego Section titles before, such as shown above after 2007 championships, but has never done it with an unbeaten record. No team actually has ever done that in the history of that section, which goes back to 1960. The Eagles are starting this year’s playoffs at 22-0-2. Photo: eastcountysports.com.
The first big upset of the 2025 CIF section playoffs around the state sees a team that has been in the top five, La Mirada, go down in the super-loaded Southern Section D1 bracket. This week’s rankings also are impacted by Granada of Livermore beating previous No. 6 De La Salle of Concord in a league playoff as well as unranked Bellarmine of San Jose winning the West Catholic Athletic League playoffs. While top-ranked Corona still has to wait until Tuesday for its first playoff game, No. 13 St. Mary’s of Stockton and No. 14 Franklin of Elk Grove are going to wait until Friday to play for the CIF Sac-Joaquin Section D1 crown.
