In the only matchup of Friday night between two top 10 teams, No. 4 Centennial (Corona) rolls in the second half for a win against No. 10 Norco. The most shocking score was up north as No. 11 Folsom didn’t just lose to No. 16 Rocklin but was overwhelmed, 40-7. Saturday score, notes & updates added.

(Rankings based on State Top 50 released last Monday)
(Through reported results of Saturday, Oct. 16)
(Thanks to Northern California correspondent Daniel Poulter for contributions)

1. Mater Dei (Santa Ana) 6-0
Defeated No. 12 Santa Margarita (Rancho SM) 56-3. Not sure there is another state in the nation in which teams near the top 10 in their state have absolutely no chance against the No. 1 team (or No. 2 or No. 3). Elijah Brown passed for 328 yards (according to the Orange County Register) and five TDs.

2. St. John Bosco (Bellflower) 7-1
No. 24 Orange Lutheran gave St. John Bosco more resistance than most have in a 49-25 contest that was played at Orange Coast College. The Braves still have No. 3 Servite to play in two weeks in the Trinity League.

3. Servite (Anaheim) 8-0
Defeated No. 40 JSerra (San Juan Capistrano) 53-0 on Thursday. Noah Fifita threw for six TDs (all in the first half) as the Friars tuned up for No. 1 Mater Dei (which they will play next Saturday night). Tetairoa McMillan had two interceptions on defense and a TD catch.

4. Centennial (Corona) 8-0
Defeated No. 10 Norco 48-24. The good news for the Huskies is they got some payback with this win over a school that snapped their 57-game league win streak last spring. Jaden Mickey’s 85-yard kickoff return for a TD after the Cougars had cut it to 27-24 was the key play of the night. The bad news is that Centennial didn’t get the type of win that would show that it is closer to the three Trinity League juggernaut squads.

5. Mission Viejo 7-1
The Diablos cruised to a 45-3 victory over Tesoro (Las Flores) on Friday. They still have pesky San Clemente to play in league.

6. Serra (San Mateo) 6-0
Head coach Patrick Walsh’s squad takes a 28-21 victory over No. 31 Valley Christian, in a contest that wasn’t as close as the final score suggests. It was a 28-0 lead for the Padres into the second half.

7. St. Francis (Mountain View) 6-0
There was no upset here, as St. Francis manhandled Archbishop Riordan (San Francisco) 33-0 at home. We’re still on track for a Serra-St. Francis showdown to end the regular season.

8. De La Salle (Concord) 4-2
Even with many key players out because of COVID, De La Salle overcomes slow start for 52-14 victory over top 50 ranked California (San Ramon). Head coach Justin Alumbaugh and DB Zeke Berry among those who stayed home.

9. Sierra Canyon (Chatsworth) 4-4
LOST to Saguaro (Scottsdale, Ariz.) 24-7. This was a loss to a strong out-of-state opponent, but not like De La Salle losing to St. Frances Academy or even Alemany losing to Lone Peak of Utah.

10. Norco 6-2
LOST to No. 4 Centennial (Corona) 48-24. Considering the likely gap between the first four teams in the state and the next few teams in the top 10, losing to the Huskies the way they did won’t hurt the Cougars in the next rankings. Kyle Crum threw for a pair of scores to help Norco to 17 straight points in the first half.

11. Folsom 6-2
For the first time since 2011, Folsom has lost a league contest, as the Bulldogs fall 40-7 to No. 16 Rocklin. Folsom was without stat star quarterback Tyler Tremain because of a shoulder injury suffered toward the end of last week’s loss to De La Salle. Highly regarded junior varsity quarterback Austin Mack was under center for most of the night.

12. Santa Margarita (Rancho SM) 5-3
LOST to No. 1 Mater Dei (Santa Ana) 56-3. Jonathan Teasley kicked a field goal for the Eagles after they recovered an onside kick to start the game. They never scored again. They still have a head-to-head win over Los Alamitos and will always be ranked higher than the Griffins in non-computer rankings.

13. Los Alamitos 7-1
Defeated Fountain Valley 56-7 on Thursday. The Barons only had one win entering the contest so a score like this was expected. It was 49-0 at halftime. Los Al already has league wins over Edison and Corona del Mar.

14. Carlsbad 8-0
The Lancers rolled to a 49-6 victory over Oceanside on Friday.

15. Lincoln (San Diego) 6-1
Did not play. The Hornets have a bye this week. The next game will be next week vs. Madison (San Diego) with Cathedral Catholic to follow.

16. Rocklin 8-0
This team made some of the biggest noise in Northern California for several years, as the Thunder rolled to a 40-7 victory over No. 11 Folsom. It snapped Folsom’s 57-game league win streak. One of the top defensive units in the state had four interceptions and three sacks. Yes, Folsom didn’t have its No. 1 QB, but Rocklin also was still without its No. 1 QB as well.

17. Vista Murrieta (Murrieta) 7-1
This week, on Friday, the Vista Murrieta machine handled Great Oak (Temecula) 38-6.

18. Alemany (Mission Hills) 4-3
Defeated No. 22 Bishop Amat (La Puente) 45-35. According to the L.A. Daily News, Floyd Chalk rushed for 260 yards on 17 carries and scored three times. Jaylen Thompson also ran wild with 186 yards and one TD on 12 carries.

19. Pittsburg 4-1
Pitt passed its potential only lone test in the Bay Valley Athletic League with a 49-28 victory over Liberty (Brentwood).

20. Cathedral Catholic (San Diego) 6-2
In the annual Holy Bowl rivalry for San Diego, the Dons ran away with a 49-7 victory over St. Augustine (San Diego).

21. Buchanan (Clovis) 7-1
The Bears are in the driver’s seat in the Tri-River Athletic Conference after a 33-24 victory over Clovis. They also are in the same position for the top seed in the CIF Central Section D1 playoffs.

22. Bishop Amat (La Puente) 5-2
LOST to No. 18 Alemany (Mission Hills) 45-35. The Lancers just could not stop Alemany’s running backs. They did score frequently themselves to stay close behind QB Tobin O’Dell (three TD passes, two TD runs).

23. Warren (Downey) 7-0
Team that we consider medium schools and No. 1 in the state in that category continues to roll after a 40-6 victory at Paramount.

24. Lutheran (Orange) 5-3
Head coach Rod Sherman’s squad put up a fight, but fell 49-25 to No. 2 St John Bosco.

25. Mission Hills (San Marcos) 6-2
Carmelo Chapman sealed a 20-14 victory for Mission Hills over No. 34 Torrey Pines with a late interception.

TEAMS ON THE BUBBLE

Bellarmine Prep (San Jose) 5-2
The Bells were unable to avoid an upset, falling to Sacred Heart Cathedral (SF) 20-13 at San Jose City College.

Central (Fresno) 5-1
Did not play. Team’s game against Clovis East was cancelled on Friday. Unknown and unconfirmed reason, but assumed COVID related by area journalists.

Central Catholic (Modesto) 7-1
Defeated Manteca 56-33. Aiden Taylor rushed for four TDs and threw a TD pass as the Raiders rolled up and down the field to knock off the previously unbeaten Buffaloes. They scored five times on five possessions in the first half and then made it six-for-six on the first series of the second half. “There was no talking to the papers and we just did what we do,” said head coach Roger Canepa, who may have a team that will now take the No. 1 seed in the CIF Sac-Joaquin Section D2 playoffs. Rocklin had been in that projected spot, but the Thunder will likely move to the D1 bracket after it beat Folsom on Friday.

Chaminade (West Hills) 5-3
The Eagles held off Notre Dame (Sherman Oaks) for a 34-21 victory on Friday.

Edison (Huntington Beach) 5-3
The Chargers continue to win after a 28-20 victory over No. 38 Corona del Mar (Newport Beach) on Friday. They were No. 30 entering the contest.

Etiwanda 8-0
Defeated Chino Hills 41-14 on Thursday. Second straight 41-14 win for Eagles, but this time against Huskies’ team that beat Rancho Cucamonga in previous game.

Inglewood 7-0
It looks like a forfeit 2-0 victory over Centennial (Compton).

Jesuit (Carmichael) 7-1
Defeated Elk Grove 70-35 on Saturday. Trenton Dewar ran for two TDs & threw for one.

Mater Dei Catholic (Chula Vista) 7-0
The Crusaders trailed after one quarter, but held on for a 28-14 victory over Eastlake (Chula Vista) Friday.

Serra (Gardena) 4-3
The Cavaliers continued to look stronger after rash of early injuries in 28-0 triumph over Cathedral of Los Angeles.

Simi Valley 9-0
The Pioneers rolled to a 41-7 win over Thousand Oaks. Now 3-0 in league.

St. Bonaventure (Ventura) 7-0
Calabasas was no match for St. Bonaventure in 63-0 romp Friday.

Torrey Pines (San Diego) 4-3
The Falcons had a shot at a game winning touchdown late in the fourth quarter, but No. 25 Mission Hills (San Marcos) took a 20-14 victory.

Valley Christian (San Jose) 5-3
Head coach Mike Machado’s squad fell behind early to No. 6 Serra (SM) on Friday, but the final margin (28-21) was respectable

Maybe this year wouldn’t have been best for our dream Centennial vs. Folsom matchup…..

And if Servite beats Mater Dei, and St John Bosco beats Servite, it’s . . . Centennial as the top seed at #1?

In the dreaded three-way tie scenario, comparative scores and other factors probably would still have one of the three or all three still higher ranked than Centennial. CIFSS would then likely just go along with the computer rankings since it is for everything else.

I am shocked at Folsom’s two losses…I expected them to defeat DLS and then handily beat Rocklin based upon the comparable DO scores…so two questions

What has gone wrong for Folsom and how does that play into next year?

Also, does Rocklin jump DLS due to a stronger win against Folsom and would they be in consideration for Open or is it still SF and Serra in the lead on that?

Can only think the QB going down screwed up Folsom much worse than Rocklin.
St Francis & Serra are still in lead for NorCal Open and Rocklin is not jumping DLS. How could anyone have an SJS team in front of DLS when DLS has never lost to an SJS team?
