Folsom gets the nod for third spot and probably won’t move for the rest of the season. Upland is this week’s other winner as Highlanders grab the final position in the State 25. In the CIF state bowl rankings, No. 1 teams remain De La Salle, St. John Bosco, Clayton Valley, St. Francis of La Canada, Campolindo, El Capitan, Central Catholic and El Cajon Christian.

CIF STATE BOWL GAME DIVISIONS RANKINGS UPDATES
(Eighth rankings of the regular season)

DIVISION I SOUTH
1. St. John Bosco (Bellflower) 7-1
2. JSerra (San Juan Capistrano) 7-1
3. Mater Dei (Santa Ana) 6-2
4. Centennial (Corona) 6-2
5. Oceanside 8-0
6. Long Beach Poly (Long Beach) 7-1

DIVISION I NORTH
1. De La Salle (Concord) 8-0
2. Folsom 8-0
3. Grant (Sacramento) 8-0
4. Serra (San Mateo) 5-2
5. Milpitas 7-0
6. Foothill (Pleasanton) 7-1

DIVISION II SOUTH
1. St. Francis (La Canada) 8-0
2. Redlands East Valley (Redlands) 7-1
3. La Mirada 7-1
4. Corona del Mar (Newport Beach) 7-1
5. Heritage (Menifee) 8-0

DIVISION II NORTH
1. Clayton Valley (Concord) 8-0
2. Los Gatos 6-1*
3. Sierra (Manteca) 8-0
4. Concord 6-1**
*With continued success, it becomes likely that Los Gatos would move to CCS Open Division playoffs and therefore would be considered D1 North for the bowl games. We are still ranking Milpitas in D1 North for bowl games since it has a D1 enrollment.
**Does not include forfeit win.

DIVISION III SOUTH
1. El Capitan (Lakeside) 8-0
2. Lompoc 8-0
3. Paso Robles 8-0

DIVISION III NORTH
1. Campolindo (Moraga) 8-0
2. Palma (Salinas) 7-0*
3. Sacred Heart Prep (Atherton) 7-0*
4. Sutter 8-0
*With continued success, it becomes likely that both Palma and Sacred Heart Prep would move to CCS Open Division playoffs and therefore would be considered D1 North for bowl games. Once either team clinches league title, the move to D1 North would be made.

DIVISION IV SOUTH
1. Christian (El Cajon) 8-0
2. Sierra Canyon (Chatsworth) 8-0
3. St. Margaret’s (SJ Capistrano) 8-0

DIVISION IV NORTH
1. Central Catholic (Modesto) 6-2
2. McClymonds (Oakland) 7-0
3. Capital Christian (Sacramento) 8-0
Note: McClymonds may have to forfeit games due to an ineligible player. If that happens, the Warriors could still win the Oakland Section title and become eligible for the CIF D4 bowl game. However, section commissioners rarely vote for a team with forfeit losses (ask Vista Murrieta down south). Even if it was a team that McClymonds beat on the field (example: Salesian of Richmond), the commissioners would look at the forfeit win for Salesian instead of the on-the-field win for the Warriors. At least that’s how they’ve tended to vote over the years.

Folsom over De La Salle? Leave it to Max Preps. These people never get the rankings right, yet continue to be quoted by media who know little of what they speak themselves. How does that happen?

Seriously, can you not be objective? That was not a fair or kind comment. Just because DLS is DLS does not guarantee they are deserving of our highest praise (only Jesus is) but i speak of course in football. Computer rankings take data that the human mind is presently incapable of putting together and analyzing to such an extent unless you can devote years. Human perception is subjective and just because DLS beat Folsom by a large margin doesnt mean that this year they are better. That is why each year is different and each year we should approach each team objectively and not have our view tied to one team. This year Folsom is amazing and could potentially beat DLS, next year it may be Grant. But quick drooling over DLS, it’s sickening how folks do that, and let the teams be themselves and stop making fun of an organization that has a difference of opinion. I personally am a bigger fan of Maxpreps because they do not idolize DLS like other organizations do. They do have DLS ranked higher in the Xcellent 25 (which is people based) but it never comes across as DLS worship, unlike other publications that I do not need to mention here.

Computer rankings for high school football are not the same as for college because too many teams do not play each other. They have a place but I don’t think they are “better” than media polls. In many cases, I’m not saying that media polls or one like ours are “better” than computers, either. But in this particular case and if the season plays out as expected, the CIF section commissioners just aren’t going to vote for Folsom over De La Salle for the Open Division. They all know what happened when those two have played before. Many of them have seen DLS win Open Division titles in 2009, 2010, 2011, 2012. They aren’t going to ignore all that, look at one computer ranking, and quick let’s vote for Folsom. I agree that Folsom could potentially beat DLS this year and could be the best team ever from the SJS. But don’t get mad at rankings. It’s the CIF that took away the possibility of that game being played by eliminating the NorCal and SoCal Open Division games.

Mention them. Would love to know what organizations you think are biased for DLS.

Folsom v DLS game may be closer than past, but no indication this Folsom team would defeat this very strong DLS team, especially if Folsom continues to not punt the ball in games against the Spartans. Spartan offense is better than last season as far as running the veer. Not sure Folsom would have any better shot at stopping it. Spartan defense hasn’t dropped off either. Maybe if those Folsom teams in the past gave the Spartan’s somewhat of a game there would be an argument, but those Folsom teams also pretty much dominated everyone else until they faced the Spartan’s. No indication they would do any better this year.

I agree with NorCalSportsFan. While Folsom has pretty much destroyed everyone in their path the past 3 years, they have come up short against DLS. And it hasn’t even been close. Based on these glaring facts, I would have to rank DLS higher than Folsom, but not by much. This years Bulldog team is very special. Along with their usual highly potent passing offense, their running game has been very effective and balanced. Their defense has also raised it quite a few notches this year. Their first string defense has been punishing opposing offenses all season. I agree with Folsom being ranked 3rd in the state and I am happy Mark has finally realized that. As far as playoffs, I think it will be interesting to see how the south unfolds to see who will have the task of trying to slow down Folsom. I do think the best solution is to bring back the northern and southern open division playoffs next year and have the loser of those games play each other in the Division 1 championship. That way the four best teams will get to battle it out.

What a great program Coach Carrol and staff have built in Oceanside. I went to watch a practice the other day and I counted 29 kids participating in practice. I heard Coach Carrol barking at some of his starting offensive lineman that they needed to get involved on the offensive scout team to prepare the defense to be successful. Every minute of practice was productive. The 1 on 1 lineman competition was intense. It must be pretty intimidating to have to block or try to pass rush against such well coached, detail oriented and disciplined kids. Kudos to Coach Carrol and staff for the work they do to help their kids be successful on and off the field. I walked away truly believing that barring injury, this Pirate Football Team can compete, and posible defeat The D1 heavyweights.

    Mark,

Can you explain how Milpitas could end up being D2 or am I misunderstanding you?

    • Mark Tennis
      Posted October 28, 2014 at 5:04 pm | Permalink

Milpitas could end up D2 if it were to lose to Los Gatos this week and then not make it into the CCS Open Division. If that were to happen, Milpitas would be in the CCS D1 playoffs and the CCS D1 champion then goes into the NorCal D2 pool and not NorCal D1. There’s also the chance Milpitas could lose to Los Gatos and still get into the CCS Open Division. Watch out as well for Valley Christian or St. Francis or Mitty (even Bellarmine) not to make it into the CCS Open Division and then be in the CCS D1 bracket. It’s a true mess which is why the CCS is our least favorite section to cover as far as the bowl games is concerned.

I haven’t seen Bosco yet in person (only on the FOX video stream) so not ready to say for sure. I am sure it will be high-scoring. Bosco’s defense isn’t nearly as good as last year but the DLS defense has been much better in recent years as well.

Don’t drop Servite now. That was their 14 th quality loss in their last 28 games.
