Inside State Football Records

Two of the many college football QBs this season who threw for more than 10,000 yards as California high schoolers are Alabama’s Bryce Young (left) and Ole Miss’ Matt Corral. An amazing number of current college football quarterbacks, two of them who are among the front-runners for the Heisman Trophy, threw for more than 10,000 yards as high school quarterbacks in California. We go over all them and not just the ones at Alabama, Ole Miss and Georgia. It’s also a good time to remind everyone of schools that are on current league championship streaks.

It’s no secret that prolific passing attacks have become almost normal at many California high schools in recent seasons. Still, it might be surprising to know that seven of the top 10 all-time leading career passers in the state are actually playing college football this season. Two others with more than 10,000 career yards also are leading major college squads right now.

Here’s a look at all of them in alpha order:

Hank Bachmeier (Boise State)
When Boise State’s current starter was at Murrieta Valley of Murrieta from 2015 to 2018, he threw for 13,150 yards in 49 games. Hank set the CIF Southern Section career record in 2018, but the Nighthawks’ season had ended while Cajon of San Bernardino’s kept going. That enabled Jayden Daniels to break that record just one week later. Bachmeier is now at No. 4 on the all-time state list. His younger brother, Tiger, is catching passes for big yards this season at Murrieta Valley. Hank passed for 172 yards for Boise State in a win this week vs. BYU.

Braxton Burmeister (Virginia Tech)
The CIF San Diego Section’s all-time passing leader from La Jolla Country Day helped cause a stir earlier this season in college football by quarterbacking Virginia Tech to an upset win against North Carolina. Burmeister had a long and winding road to get to Virginia Tech, which included his first stop at Oregon plus injuries. Let’s hope the shoulder injury he suffered on Saturday against Notre Dame in a 32-29 loss is not serious. At La Jolla Country Day, Burmeister, who also is one of the top rushing QBs in the nation, passed for 11,512 yards from 2013 to 2016. He’s currently No. 10 on the all-time state list.

Matt Corral (Ole Miss)
He has perhaps moved to the top of the current Heisman Trophy watch lists and this Saturday helped as Matt showed off his wheels and his arm in a crazy 52-51 win by the Rebels over Arkansas in which its defense had to stop a game-winning two-pointer. Working with Mississippi head coach Lane Kiffin has benefitted Corral’s development, who also is looked at as a first-round NFL Draft choice. Corral was in some wild and wacky games in the early years of his prep career from 2014 to 2016 at Oaks Christian of Westlake Village, especially one in 2016 against Hank Bachmeier and his team at Murrieta Valley that Murrieta Valley won 70-62. Corral transferred to Long Beach Poly for his senior year in 2017, but that didn’t help the Jackrabbits get close to super teams Mater Dei and St. John Bosco. His combined passing yards total from the two schools of 10,330 yards currently stands at No. 19 on the all-time state list.

Jayden Daniels (Arizona State)
The graduate of Cajon High in San Bernardino led the Sun Devils to a 28-10 win last Friday over Stanford, which included a career-best 51-yard TD run for the first score of the game. Daniels is in his third season starting at ASU. At Cajon, he passed or 14,007 yards in four seasons from 2015 to 2018. He is No. 2 on the all-time state list, but still far behind state record holder Jake Browning of Folsom (16,775 yards from 2012 to 2014). Browning went on to star at Washington. Daniels did break one of Browning’s state records because he also rushed or 3,579 yards in high school and ended with 17,406 total offense yards for his career. Browning only rushed for 110 yards in his prep career.

J.T. Daniels (Georgia)
When J.T. threw his last pass for Mater Dei of Santa Ana in the 2017 CIF Open Division state final, he was officially listed as a junior with 12,104 career yards. With another season, he would have threatened the state record of 16,775 by Jake Browning. A couple of weeks later, though, J.T. reclassed for 2018 and headed to USC. He has since transferred to Georgia and began this year as the starter until being sidelined with a right lat injury. Daniels didn’t play in this week’s win by the No. 2 Bulldogs against Auburn. The dream matchup for Mater Dei fans in the national title game between J.T. and Bryce Young (Alabama) is still alive despite Alabama’s loss to Texas A&M on Saturday. Daniels’ prep total of 12,104 is still No. 6 on the all-time state list.

Tristan Gebbia (Oregon State)
He’s played for the Beavers, but is currently a back-up to starter Chance Nolan on a team that recently blew out USC but lost on Saturday to Washington State. At Calabasas, Gebbia was the ringleader of a crazy-talented offense under then head coach Casey Clausen that piled up points and yardage. Gebbia finished with 13,109 yards from 2014 to 2016, which is No. 4 in state history.

Trent Tompkins (UC Davis)
He’s been the Taysom Hill of the Aggies so far this season, able to score on runs or gadget plays or coming in to play quarterback due to injuries. He’s still listed as a freshman. More success for him should be coming. UCD was No. 3 in the nation in last week’s FCS Top 25 but lost on Saturday to Idaho. Tompkins is regarded by some in the CIF Central Section as the best QB they’ve seen. He helped Central of Fresno win the D1 title in 2018 and in three seasons he passed for 11,743 yards from 2016 to 2018. Tompkins is No. 8 in state history for career passing yards, but No. 2 in section history behind Sam Metcalf of Farmersville (11,913 yards from 2011 to 2014. Two other Central Section QBs that recently went over 10,000 career yards — Alec Trujillo (San Joaquin Memorial) and Nathan Lamb (Tulare) — are playing at JCs this fall.

D.J. Uiagalelei (Clemson)
The 2019 Mr. Football State Player of the Year from St. John Bosco of Bellflower will be looking to finish the regular season strong after a slow start to his career at Clemson. Replacing No. 1 NFL Draft pick Trevor Lawrence as the Tigers’ signal-caller, D.J. was at the helm in losses to Georgia and North Carolina State. Two receivers he’ll be looking at to help the offense improve include former Bosco teammate Beaux Collins and former Folsom all-state selection Joe Ngata. Despite not becoming the starter for the Braves until several games into sophomore season, Uiagalelei passed for 10,496 yards from 2017 to 2019. That’s No. 17 on the all-time state list.

Bryce Young (Alabama)
Everyone knows that Bryce quarterbacked Mater Dei of Santa Ana to the 2018 CIF Open Division state title and was spectacular as a senior in 2019 (although the Monarchs didn’t win the state crown). He’s now starting at Alabama and had the Crimson Tide sailing along at No. 1 in the nation until they were upset on Saturday at Texas A&M. Some people tend to forget, though, that Bryce was a varsity standout as a freshman and sophomore QB at Cathedral High of Los Angeles before he transferred to Mater Dei. Counting his four high school varsity seasons, Young had 13,250 career passing yards. That is No. 3 on the all-time state list.

CONSECUTIVE LEAGUE CHAMPIONSHIP STREAKS

Now that De La Salle of Concord has gone 4-2 in a non-league slate of games that included wins against Cathedral Catholic of San Diego and Folsom but with losses to St. Francis of Mountain View and St. Frances Academy of Baltimore (Md.), the Spartans will play four games in the East Bay Athletic League Mountain Division. De La Salle played those same four schools in the spring so it was credited with winning that league title and extending its current state record to 23 consecutive league titles.

De La Salle has actually not lost to a regular league opponent in every season since 1981. It’s not a streak of 40 straight years, however, because the Spartans played a free-lance schedule and were not in a league from 1998 through 2007 and then again from 2012 through 2018. They won the EBAL Mountain Division in 2019.

Palma of Salinas and Dos Palos are both still tied for second on the all-time state list with 18 straight league titles. Those streaks ended in 2001 and 2002, respectively.

The next highest active streak is at St. Margaret’s of San Juan Capistrano. The Tartars won their 16th straight league title in the 2019 season. They only played one league opponent in the 2021 spring season, however, and are doing a free-lance (no league) schedule this fall. Their league title streak therefore is on hold at 16 until if and when they return to being in a league.

Two other current league title streaks on the all-time state list are going at St. Mary’s of Stockton and McClymonds of Oakland. The Rams didn’t play enough league games to be credited for a league title in the spring but their streak didn’t end, either. If it wins the Tri-Cities Athletic League crown this season, St. Mary’s will have 14 straight league championships. For McClymonds, its dominance in the Oakland Athletic League is expected to continue. If Mack does do that, it would be 12 league titles in a row.

There were two long league title streaks that were snapped during the short spring season. Centennial of Corona dropped a 36-34 contest to Norco that ended its streak of winning Big VIII League titles at 14. Those two teams will meet on Friday to no doubt determine this year’s league champ. Valencia of Valencia also suffered a 21-7 loss to Saugus that broke its streak of winning league titles at 11 years.
