For the next few weeks, we’ll treat Friday and Saturday nights like we do for the fall with the compilation of a weekend scoreboard involving the state’s top-ranked teams. The game of Friday night was in Bellflower where No. 1 St. John Bosco was pushed by No. 3 Servite but came out on top, 38-28. Both No. 7 Cathedral Catholic (San Diego) & No. 8 Sierra Canyon (Chatsworth) earned big wins in local No. 1 vs. No. 2 showdowns while the highest ranked team to fall in an upset was 2019 CIF D1-AA state champ Central of Fresno. Saturday updates include wins for De La Salle and Mission Viejo.

Note: Look for a brand new State Top 50 set of football rankings that won’t simply be a list on Monday night. We’ll have insights and breakdowns based on more than 40 years of going to Friday night games with an overview of the state’s top teams and what’s coming up that just can’t be matched. It’s more than 8,000 words of jam-packed info. Each new set of rankings will be for Gold Club members only. The late Friday/Weekend Scoreboards will continue to be free posts and will provide snippets of info, comments and more.

(Through reported results of Saturday, March 27)

1. St. John Bosco (Bellflower) 3-0
Defeated No. 3 Servite (Anaheim) 38-28. A huge fourth-down TD catch from super sophomore Matayo Uiagalelei from sophomore Pierce Clarkson in the third quarter was the 2nd TD catch of the night for Matayo. Braves were down 7-3 at halftime, but revved it up in the third quarter.

2. Mater Dei (Santa Ana) 2-0
Defeated Lutheran (Orange) 49-7. OLu actually scored first, but it didn’t take long for the Monarchs to take control behind freshman QB Elijah Brown.
