Hi Mark, I see above that Del Oro is in Div 1 north even though they are the 1 seed in SJS Div 2. If folsom wins SJS div 1 and Del Oro wins SJS div 2, Folsom would play DLS in open div. Would Del Oro now move up and play in NORCAL
Division 1 champiuonship and State d1 championship?

      Posted November 11, 2013 at 1:48 pm | Permalink

Yes, Del Oro is on the same path as Granite Bay last year except Granite Bay was D1 for the section instead of Del Oro being D2 in the section. Doesn’t matter what division Folsom is in within the SJS. Folsom is D1 for the bowl games. The Open Division can be a team from anywhere, but in the north it will almost always be two D1 teams.

@Mark, Is it becoming more realistic regional with VM/CC vs Oceanside because of RC and Edison of fresno lost?

Yes, Edison’s loss really hurts the Central Section’s chances plus Oaks Christian’s loss hurts Bakersfield’s.

Mark, its possible the media in the Central Section was entirely wrong as to who was the top team. I would just ask you to check back in a month, to see who performs the best. The newspapers out here stood by their bets from day one. But results on the field are all that matters as I am sure you know.

I am not sure what you are talking about. Edison was No. 1 last week and Bakersfield was No. 2. That’s what the Fresno Bee had. Don’t see how anyone else could have had it differently unless they were ignoring losses. We had it the same way.

Mark, does winning your cif section a requirement to qualify for State game?

    • Posted November 11, 2013 at 3:47 pm | Permalink

Yes only section champions qualify for regional bowl games.

Yes, as Darrin B says, only section champs can get bowl eligible.

For DIV North, Where is undefeated Hilmar? Hilmar is better than McClymonds and Le Grand and if they meet Central Catholic in the section final and win… What then???

Hilmar is better than those teams as you state. But Hilmar’s enrollment is far above 500, which makes it ineligible for D4 and puts them into the D3 mix.

      Posted November 12, 2013 at 10:40 am | Permalink

It would help Inderkum’s possible case quite a bit for both Rocklin and Pleasant Grove to go far in their brackets. Early losses by both would hurt, especially if it’s Inderkum being compared to Enterprise (which is probably going to be unbeaten). I think they can potentially still beat Wilcox if it ends up out of the CCS Open Division and then wins a divisional title, but not Serra. St. Francis of Mountain View (with a win over Serra) also will be a contender. Just really have to see the CCS pairings to get a better handle on it.

Mark, Does that mean that if Serra (wins its section) that would eliminate Chaminade from the picture for being bowl eligible for DII. Also La Habra and Valencia could eliminate each other as well (since only one can be section champ)?

    • Mark Tennis
      Posted November 12, 2013 at 10:43 am | Permalink

Only section champions can play in a regional bowl game so since Serra and Chaminade are in the same section division only one would win and get eligible. La Habra and Valencia actually are in different divisions. You may be confused with the Valencia of Placentia. La Habra is CIFSS Southern Division, Valencia is CIFSS Northern Division. Actually, the two could play in D2 South bowl game if Serra as expected right now would be in the Open Division playing the CIFSS Pac-5 champ.

    Hi Mark,
Crystal ball question. Barring an upset it looks like the North DIV Regional will most likely be a rematch of CC & Mack (sorry Le Grand). One slot for South DIV Regional will be Parker or Christian. Who will the SD Section 3 champ face, especially if all the Southern Section contenders lose (Northwest, East Valley & Northeast). Could it be a Central Section team or even an L.A. Section team?

    • Mark Tennis
      Posted November 12, 2013 at 3:10 pm | Permalink

Yes, looking over the D3 San Diego Section it does look like it will come down to Parker vs. Christian with the winner going to the D4 South bowl game. I also think Parker and/or Christian is superior to Santa Fe Christian from last year, which may help the CIF keep Central Catholic in D4 in the north. That other spot does indeed seem up for grabs because all of the CIFSS D4 enrollment schools have to win pretty difficult divisions. Therefore, no question a Central Section team like Bakersfield Christian or CVC can get in, especially because those two are in the same section division as Mission Oak. And if CVC or Bak Chr win that division, they’ll have an argument no matter what. All of the commissioners in the room voting are all well aware of Wasco and winning that division that Wasco was in last year may sway a lot of minds.

Not to be abrupt, but what is the fascination with Clayton Valley or Casa Grande? A team like Inderkum deserves that spot if they win their section rather than those two teams. A loss to DLS 34-14 in their first game isn’t good because it’s a known fact DLS plays bad the first month of the season.. I.E. Serra San Mateo. DO you think there’s any chance Inderkum sneaks into the bowl game vs Enterprise if the two teams they lost to make it far?

    • Mark Tennis
      Posted November 12, 2013 at 3:18 pm | Permalink

Clayton Valley just beat a pretty good Northgate team by a wide margin and did the same to an unbeaten team from Rancho Cotate last year in the NCS D2 final. If they were to beat Casa Grande again (which also would be unbeaten) and goes onto the board for the selection meeting, there’s no doubt the voters will be impressed. We all know DLS has some early-season struggles but it’s still DLS and everyone in the room is going to vote for a 12-1 team that has lost only to DLS and just beat a 12-0 team in its section final. If Inderkum is on the board with two losses and especially to teams that went out early in the SJS playoffs, good luck winning a vote against Clayton Valley or even Casa Grande (if Casa Grande has a win over Clayton Valley). Inderkum and the other Sac-Joaquin Section teams really need Serra to win on Saturday. If Serra doesn’t make the CCS Open Division, Serra is going to immediately become a NorCal D2 bowl game favorite.

Despite winning last week 37-6, Bakersfield dropped from 15 to 19 in the rankings and six teams jumped over them. How can a team continue to win but drop in your rankings?

    • Mark Tennis
      Posted November 12, 2013 at 11:18 pm | Permalink

That’s because Oaks Christian lost to Westlake, which has a win over Bakersfield. Teams often go up and down in rankings depending on how key teams they’ve played perform later in the season. Edison’s loss hurts them too because there will now be no other ranked teams to play in order to win a section title.

    • Yoas
      Posted November 13, 2013 at 10:16 am | Permalink

I believe if Enterprise wins out, and Serra high school loses this Saturday, those two teams will make the Division 2 Bowl.

Enterprise can get a bowl game, but needs Serra to win on Saturday so Serra is in the Open Division of the CCS. Enterprise will most likely lose in a vote even if unbeaten against possible 14-0 Casa Grande or 13-1 Clayton Valley.

There is talk of a play-in game for either Christian or Parker to enter D4 state bowl. Is this true? If so, how would this work? Say they win that game, what’s next?

    • Marty

Of course this is after making the assumption one of them wins their D3 CIF championship.

      • RedBird
        Posted November 13, 2013 at 4:28 pm | Permalink

        Marty,
Last year CIF added Regional Bowl Games. To become eligible you have to win your section. Then a CIF committee chooses the 2 participants of the Regional Game based on: win-loss record, strength of schedule, head to head competition & common opponents. 2 southern participants are chosen from the San Diego, Southern & Central Sections of CIF (southern half of CA).
Parker & Christian are in Bowl Division IV South(schools under 500 enrollment). The winner from the South Regional Bowl faces the winner from the Northern Regional Bowl. Santa Fe Christian beat Rio Hondo last year in the Regional & played Central Catholic Modesto in the State Bowl Game last year.
Parker & Christian are favored to win their section & the winner will get a bowl bid. Their opponent at this time is unclear because all the other schools under the 500 enrollment cap in the south are not favored to win their respective sections. If no schools under the 500 cap win their section then a Division III section winner will be selected to participate.

Great answer, RedBird. Just wonder if Parker or Christian can hang possibly with Central Catholic. CC not as good as last year and Parker/Christian clearly are better than SFC was last year.

CC was loaded in ’12. Their TE/DE (Mundt) started at Oregon this year. Had 5 catches/121 yds & 2 tds vs Tennessee! CC should’ve been placed in DIII last year. CC ’13 is still very good. Their O-line is the best in the state in DIV. But CC has trouble matching up w/teams w/speed (St. Marys & Mack). St. Mary’s beat CC because they were able to match up physically & they had more speed. Both SD teams have lots of speed but I don’t think they can match up physically.

    Mark
Have to disagree with about Clayton Valley being better than Casa Grande.
Saw CV against Northgate last Friday and on film against Concord 2 weeks ago. I’ve seen Casa twice on film: against Rancho Cotati and Card. Newman. CV is an excellent team and does things very well(most Tim Murphy coached teams do), but they lack the size and speed of the Guachos, and JaJuan Lawson is argueably the most effective QB in the state and I’d see him picking the CV defense apart with both his arm and feet. I feel this Casa team can hang with the best SoCal D2 teams, Serra(whom I think will play in the CIF South Open against Bosco if both win their section/divisions. What do you think?) and perhaps Nade, excepted.
Do you think CCS will let Terra Nova play in their enrollment division instead of getting stuck in the Open against the good WCAL teams? Nova would make a worthy opponent against whoever wins NCS D3.

    • Mark Tennis
      Posted November 16, 2013 at 11:22 am | Permalink

      Ron,

We have Clayton Valley ranked higher than Casa Grande, which is different than thinking they “are better” than Casa Grande. The two will probably play and they are 1-2 in that division so it will all work out.

In the CCS, the seedings and pairings are pre-determined to some degree. I think it would be great to see Terra Nova in D1 or D2 and not “getting stuck” in the Open Division. The PAL champion for that division just automatically gets placed into the Open so it’s not a matter of the CCS “letting” Terra Nova play in its division. They do this so the Open Division is not six WCAL teams plus one or two others (which obviously that could happen in some years). Instead, we get Terra Nova having to play in the Open Division plus Palma this year and other good WCAL teams (last year St. Francis) dropping down into the divisions and winning titles. It has to be very tough in that section particularly with the private schools (WCAL) dominating so much and figuring out ways to give an advantage here and there to the public schools.
