COACHING MILESTONES

Boys Basketball

Tom Bonfigli (Cardinal Newman, Santa Rosa)
The affable wily veteran didn’t get the win he badly wanted when his team lost 58-52 to the No. 7 team in the state, Los Angeles Pacific Hills, in the CIF Division IV state championship. However, in the game before that, a 73-66 victory over Archbishop Riordan (San Francisco) that earned Bonfigli his second D4 NorCal title, the 59-year old picked up career win No. 657. It put him into the No. 18 spot all time wins list for boys basketball coaching in the Cal-Hi Sports Record Book.

Don Lippi (St. Joseph Notre Dame, Alameda)
The only coach to win a section title in four different CIF sections (Sac-Joaquin, Oakland, Central Coast and North Coast) came up just short in a bid for his third state championship when the Pilots lost on a last second shot, 47-46, to San Diego Horizon in the CIF Division V state title game. Lippi, however, did move up on the all-time coaching wins list. With a 50-36 victory over Sacramento Capital Christian in the D5 NorCal title game, Lippi ends the season with 724 career victories, which places him No. 11 all time.

Softball

John Perez (Santiago, Corona)
When UNLV-bound Brittany Abacherli hit a walk-off solo home run for a 6-5 win over West Ranch of Valencia, the Sharks won their 400th game in their softball’s program history. All 400 of those wins are with Perez leading the team. Perez used to coach the Santiago girls basketball team as well.

RECORD BOOK ENTRIES

Girls Basketball

Mariya Moore (Salesian, Richmond)
The junior star and one of three underclass girls to make it as a finalist for Ms. Basketball State Player of the Year solidified her nomination by etching her name in the CIF state championship record book in her team’s 62-60 loss to Gardena Serra in the CIF Division IV state championship game. The solidly-built 5-foot-11 Moore, who can play any position on the court, had 35 points, which is the second most points ever in a Division IV title game behind the 37 points of Courtney Paris of Piedmont in 2004. It also tied her for fifth all-time for any division with the legendary Lisa Leslie. She scored her 35 in 1990 for Inglewood Morningside. Where Moore stands alone is on the free-throw line, where Serra’s propensity to put her there almost backfired. She set state title game records in all divisions by making 17-of-20 free throws. Moore broke the previous bests of 12 free throws made and 17 attempts held respectively by Alexis Felts from Atherton Sacred Heart Prep in 1994, and Leslie who did it in the 1990 game.

Baseball

Prospect (Saratoga)
Despite the game going just five innings, the Panthers will earn a spot in the state record book with their 36 hits during a 35-0 win over Yerba Buena of San Jose. The 36 hits will tie them for the fourth best mark for hits in a game with the state record at 50 set by Faith Baptist of Canoga Park back in 1999. Senior Will Lighthouse led the offensive attack with a six-for-six performance, including two home runs and 10 runs batted in. Jake Belardes struck out nine while pitching a no-hitter.

RECORD BOOK TRACKER

Softball

Alyssa Palomino (Mission Viejo)
Continuing her county home run record pursuit, Palomino hit a three-run home run as the Diablos moved to 16-1 on the year with a 8-4 win over Dana Hills in South Coast League action. So far this sophomore slugger has at least 13 home runs with one game missing stats.

STAT STARS OF THE WEEK

Baseball

Ty Boyles (Quartz Hill)
A threat at the plate or on the mound, Boyles tossed a no-hitter while striking out 14 in a 11-0 win over Eastside. Earlier this season, he had a streak of three games in a row with a home run at the plate.

Willie Calhoun (Benicia)
Despite two hits and driving in four runs, his streak of three games in a row with a home run came to an end as the Panthers defeated Vacaville 10-5.

Kevin Cali (Harker, San Jose)
Blasted his CIFCCS leading fourth and fifth home runs and he could have added more, but the game with cross-town Andrew Hill was called for darkness with the score a 7-7 tie.

Jacob Erickson (Mater Dei, Santa Ana)
Called upon to pitch in the championship game of the NHSI in North Carolina, he turned in an outstanding performance. Erickson pitched a complete game shutout with eight strikeouts as the Monarchs defeated Harvard-Westlake of North Hollywood, 4-0, to maintain their No. 1 ranking in the state.

Jake Gatewood (Clovis)
With fans lined up early to get in to see the championship game of the Fresno Easter Classic, Gatewood showed why he is headed to USC as he pitched a no-hitter while striking out eight. He also scored the game’s lone run as the Cougars defeated Kerman 1-0.

Dillon Kelley (Mt. Whitney, Visalia)
Homering for the third game in a row wasn’t enough to prevent a 9-6 loss to Clovis West of Fresno.

Drew Miller (Stevenson, Pebble Beach)
Had a grand slam and six RBIs in a 13-1 rout of Gonzales.

Jake Sweaney (Garces, Bakersfield)
His bat has been starting to heat up, as Sweaney homered for the second day in a row last week during a 7-2 loss against Clovis West of Fresno. Already this week Sweaney has made it three games in a row with a home run, as he drove in two runs during the Rams’ 12-5 win over Desert Christian of Lancaster.

Eddie Torres (Frontier, Bakersfield)
Several players in the last few weeks have put together streaks of three straight games with a home run and he was one of them. Torres homered and drove in six runs during a 9-3 win over Hoover of Fresno to start his streak. Before his streak of three games in a row with a home run, Torres had just one home run on the year for the Titans.

Softball

Kristina Brown (Dixon)
In her best offensive performance of the season, Brown homered and drove in seven runs as the Rams defeated Capital Christian of Sacramento 16-2.

Rebecca Faulkner (Carlmont, Belmont)
The state’s all-time winningest softball coach, Jim Liggett, always seems to have a pitcher that can also hit, and this junior is the latest one. Last week in a 5-2 win over San Mateo Hillsdale, she hit her third home run of the season and struck out a season-high 11 batters in a 5-2 victory.

Brittany File (Carmel)
The senior pitcher and slugger was a one-girl wrecking crew last week. In a 7-5 victory over King City, she struck out 18 from the circle and at the plate she had two doubles and four RBIs. The next day in a 13-0 mercy-shortened five inning 13-0 win over Santa Cruz, she fired her second no hitter of the season with 13 strikeouts, a triple, four RBIs and two runs scored. Her 123 strikeouts this season is No. 2 amongst reported leaders in the CIF Central Coast Section.

Johanna Grauer (Amador Valley, Pleasanton)
Hardly allowing any hits this season, Grauer has yet to allow an earned run as she entered this week with a record of 7-0 with 80 strikeouts while allowing just nine hits and three walks in 44 innings.

Georgia Hill (Piedmont)
She hit her fifth and sixth home runs of the season and drove in seven with four runs scored in a rout of San Francisco University.

Amanda Lorenz (Moorpark)
For the third time this season, Lorenz drove in five runs during a game. In a 11-3 win over Bishop Montgomery of Torrance, Lorenz flexed her power as she hit a season-best three home runs.

Rylee Pierce (El Diamante, Visalia)
Another power hitting 10th-grader is making her case for being our state sophomore of the year. She hit three home runs and drove in four runs during an 11-0 win over San Joaquin Memorial. On the year, Pierce has 12 home runs despite currently on a five-game homerless streak since her three home-run game.

Alyssa Stockton (Delhi)
Sophomore pitcher struck out a season-high 19 and didn’t allow an earned run as the Hawks defeated Millennium of Tracy 4-3.

Paige Von Sprecken (Yorba Linda)
Doing it all in the Mustangs’ 16-0 Empire League win over Valencia, Von Sprecken allowed just two hits while striking out 10 in the circle. At the plate she went 3-for-3 with two doubles and four runs batted in.
