Week 10: SoCal CIF Bowl Rankings

Mission Prep players (l-r) Andrew DeSeca, Conrad Ochotorena, Calvin Levisay, Patrick Laird, Trevor Fernandez and Tyler Baty have helped their team remain unbeaten heading into showdown of unbeatens this week against Bishop Diego of Santa Barbara. Photo courtesy of school.

There are titanic showdowns in regular season finales throughout the region but only one that involves two No. 1 teams – Paraclete vs. Sierra Canyon. Go to our Twitter page @CalHiSports for game reports and check our Facebook page for more highlights.

Note: The top 10 teams that would be ranked by CalHiSportsFootball for the CIF Open Division in Southern California would be:

1. Narbonne (Harbor City); 2. Vista Murrieta (Murrieta); 3. Mission Viejo; 4. St. John Bosco (Bellflower); 5. Mater Dei (Santa Ana); 6. Santa Margarita (Rancho SM); 7. St. Bonaventure (Ventura); 8. Centennial (Corona); 9. El Toro (Lake Forest); 10. Upland.

With assistance from Harold Abend and Paul Muyskens, here are the Week 10 rankings for each of Southern California’s CIF bowl game divisions (previous ranking in parentheses; after games of Saturday, Oct. 20):

DIVISION I SOUTH
1. (1) Narbonne (Harbor City) 9-0
2. (2) Vista Murrieta (Murrieta) 9-0
3. (3) Mission Viejo 9-0
4. (4) St. John Bosco (Bellflower) 9-0*
5. (5) Mater Dei (Santa Ana) 7-2
6. (6) Santa Margarita (Rancho SM) 8-1
7. (7) St. Bonaventure (Ventura) 8-1
8. (8) Centennial (Corona) 8-1
9. (10) El Toro (Lake Forest) 9-0
10. (11) Upland 9-0
11. (14) Crenshaw (Los Angeles) 7-1**
12. (15) Oaks Christian (Westlake Village) 8-1
13. (9) Alemany (Mission Hills) 7-2
14. (NR) Bishop Amat (La Puente) 7-1-1
15. (NR) Clovis 8-1
*Does not include forfeit losses.
**Does not include default win.
Drops: Previous No. 12 Tesoro (Rancho Santa Margarita) lost to San Clemente 29-21; No. 13 Chaparral (Temecula) lost to Murrieta Valley (Murrieta) 41-31.
Bubble Teams: Central (Fresno) 7-2, Chaparral (Temecula) 7-2, Charter Oak (Covina) 8-1, Clovis North (Clovis) 8-1, Crespi (Encino) 8-2, Lutheran (Orange) 6-3, Mission Hills (San Marcos) 7-2, Murrieta Valley (Murrieta) 8-1, Notre Dame (Sherman Oaks) 6-3, Palos Verdes (PV Estates) 6-3, Rancho Cucamonga 7-2, Santiago (Corona) 6-3, Tesoro (Rancho Santa Margarita) 6-3, Westlake (Westlake Village) 6-3.
No. 1 Team Result: Narbonne defeated Washington (Los Angeles) 62-3.
Race for No. 1: There are showdowns galore in this division for the final week of the regular season. Narbonne has little to worry about, but No. 2 Vista Murrieta takes on Santiago of Corona for the Big VIII League title, No. 3 Mission Viejo plays No. 9 El Toro in a matchup of unbeatens to decide the South Coast League crown and No. 4 St. John Bosco still needs to beat No. 6 Santa Margarita to avoid dropping into a three-way tie in the Trinity League. This week also sees No. 7 St. Bonaventure playing No. 12 Oaks Christian in the first-ever Marmonte League title game. Both the Seraphs and Lions have already won divisional league crowns. No. 13 Alemany also needs to bounce back from a loss to Crespi in its game against Loyola of Los Angeles. If not, then the Warriors could end up in one of those awful three-way ties for second in the Serra League.

DIVISION II SOUTH
1. (1) Oceanside 8-1
2. (3) Edison (Huntington Beach) 8-1
3. (2) Lompoc 9-0
4. (4) Chaminade (West Hills) 8-1
5. (7) Serra (Gardena) 7-2
6. (6) Tustin 9-0
7. (8) Citrus Hill (Perris) 9-0
8. (11) Cathedral Catholic (San Diego) 7-2
9. (9) Serrano (Phelan) 9-0
10. (14) Helix (La Mesa) 7-1
11. (13) La Serna (Whittier) 8-1
12. (12) Garces (Bakersfield) 8-1
13. (15) La Mirada 8-1
14. (NR) Palmdale 9-0
15. (NR) Olympian (Chula Vista) 9-0
Drops: Previous No. 5 Hart (Newhall) lost to Valencia 31-20; No. 10 La Costa Canyon (Carlsbad) lost to Oceanside 56-0.
Bubble Teams: Carter (Rialto) 9-0, Camarillo 8-1, Cathedral (Los Angeles) 7-1, Heritage (Menifee) 8-1, Palos Verdes (PV Peninsula) 6-3, Poway 7-2, Summit (Fontana) 8-1, Valencia 6-3, Villa Park 8-1.
No. 1 Result: Oceanside defeated La Costa Canyon (Carlsbad) 56-0.
Race for No. 1: With Hart’s loss to Valencia, teams from the CIFSS Northern Division would at first glance seem to have little chance of earning one of the two CIF Southern California Division II bowl game berths. Palmdale, though, has a 35-21 win over Valencia and has been rolling in the Golden League, including last week’s 76-16 romp past Littlerock. What still remains the most likely scenario in this division is for the CIF San Diego D2 champ (could be No. 1 Oceanside, No. 8 Cathedral Catholic, No. 10 Helix or unbeaten and No. 15 Olympian) to play the CIFSS Western Division champ (could be No. 3 Lompoc, No. 4 Chaminade or No. 5 Gardena Serra). Edison of Huntington Beach and Tustin are in the weaker CIFSS Southwest Division, but they could play each other in a 13-1 vs. 14-0 final. Edison’s case for a bowl game also is going to be tied directly to what Mater Dei does in the CIFSS Pac-Five playoffs since the Chargers’ only loss is by 20-14 to the Monarchs.

DIVISION III SOUTH
1. (1) Paraclete (Lancaster) 8-1
2. (4) St. Augustine (San Diego) 7-2
3. (5) Monrovia 7-2
4. (6) Wasco 9-0
5. (8) Madison (San Diego) 8-1
6. (2) Nordhoff (Ojai) 8-1
7. (9) Laguna Beach 8-0-1
8. (7) Valley Center 6-3
9. (10) San Dimas 8-1
10. (3) Mission Oak (Tulare) 7-2
Drops: None.
Bubble Teams: Banning 8-1, Brawley 8-1, Corona del Mar (Newport Beach) 6-3*, La Salle (Pasadena) 9-0, North (Torrance) 7-2, San Marino 8-1, Segerstrom (Santa Ana) 8-1.
*Forfeit win not included.
No. 1 Team Result: Paraclete defeated Windward (Los Angeles) 57-6.
Race for No. 1: No teams dropped out, but previous No. 2 Nordhoff lost in its Tri-Valley League showdown 14-7 to unbeaten and D4 South-ranked Bishop Diego and had to drop behind San Diego Madison in this week’s rankings. Mission Oak also lost to a bigger school (this time Tulare) for the second time and had to go from No. 3 to No. 10. We like St. Augustine for the new No. 2 since its only losses are to D2 South-ranked Cathedral Catholic and to bigger school Otay Ranch. The Saints also have quality wins over bigger schools like Steele Canyon of Spring Valley and Eastlake of Chula Vista. This week’s monster matchup sees No. 1 Paraclete play D4 South No. 1 Sierra Canyon for the Alpha League title. The two may play again in the CIFSS Mid-Valley Division playoffs and for the record Sierra Canyon is No. 1 with Paraclete No. 2 in the weekly rankings put out by the CIFSS office for that division.

DIVISION IV SOUTH
1. (1) Sierra Canyon (Chatsworth) 9-0
2. (2) Bishop Diego (Santa Barbara) 9-0
3. (3) Mission Prep (San Luis Obispo) 8-0
4. (4) Ontario Christian 9-0
5. (5) Rio Hondo Prep (Arcadia) 7-1
6. (6) St. Margaret’s (SJ Capistrano) 8-1
7. (7) Santa Fe Christian (Solana Beach) 6-3
8. (9) La Jolla Country Day (La Jolla) 5-3
9. (10) Francis Parker (San Diego) 6-3
10. (8) Horizon (San Diego) 6-3
Drops: None.
Bubble Teams: Army-Navy (Carlsbad) 9-0, Aquinas (San Bernardino) 6-3, Bakersfield Christian 7-2, Boron 9-1, Christian (El Cajon) 6-3, St. Anthony (Long Beach) 6-3, Windward (Los Angeles) 5-3.
No. 1 Team Result: Sierra Canyon defeated Brentwood (Los Angeles) 42-7.
Race for No. 1: We see the MaxPreps computer rankings for this division has Bishop Diego and Mission Prep in the No. 1 and No. 2 positions, which is fine for those two schools to promote as they play each other this Friday in a unique non-league game. But if Sierra Canyon (which the computer has third) beats Paraclete it would border on the absurd not to have the Trailblazers ranked No. 1. They are also, after all, the defending D4 state bowl champs. Rankings aside, the Bishop Diego vs. Mission Prep game is huge because those two teams would not be playing each other again in the CIFSS playoffs. They will be in different divisions (Bishop Diego in Northwest, Mission Prep in Northeast) so if the two were to both win titles then this game could decide which one would get a bowl game and which one wouldn’t.

Cathedral Catholic is not in Div 2 playoffs in SD Section, they are Division 3 so they can avoid playing Oceanside or Helix.

That is correct. Thanks for catching that. Cathedral probably wishes it was in that division, though, because chances of getting a bowl game are remote otherwise.

If they wanted to be in Div 2 all they would have to do is request to play up. However, they have chosen not to and even declined to play Oceanside when both schedules lined up a few years back. Furthermore, with the new playoff format beginning next year in SD section they will not be playing in the open division with Helix, Oceanside, Poway, LCC and a few other schools that have been very sucessful in the past 5 years. Even though they have won 5 or 6 consecutive div 3 championships.

    Newby eying century mark

Chaminade’s Terrell Newby is closing in on 100 career touchdowns. The running back scored six more in a 62-26 win over Cathedral to wrap up the Mission League championship, giving Newby 90 TDs entering the playoffs.

Ten more touchdowns sounds like a lot, but Newby is finding the end zone at a rapid pace with 33 touchdowns this season — an average of 3.3 per game — including 16 over the past three games.

Only three area backs have ever scored more than 100 in their careers: Chad Kackert (134, Grace Brethren, 2002-04); Malcolm Jones (109, Oaks Christian, 2006-09); and Milton Knox (103, Birmingham, 2004-06).

“One hundred TDs would definitely be a good accomplishment,” Newby said. “That would be great for me.”

I wouldn’t brag about running the score up on teams and being happy someone got 6 TD’s in a game where you obviously had the game in the bag early. That just shows your Coach doesn’t know the concept of good sportsmanship or how to have a little respect for the other team. There are plenty of teams that could run the score up once the game is over at the half if they kept their starters in all four quarters but choose not to. Your team doesn’t seem to know that you can dominate without being a bully.

before you speak look at the box score buddy. 12 carries is all he had, Lee had 5 carries. Chaminade intercepted LSU bound QB Hayden Rettig 5 times in the first half leading to TD’s, If Cathedral wants to pass into a great defense and go for a 4th down and 3 conversion in their own end in the first half thats on them. Chaminade has played ALL 60 of its players in each of the last 4 games. EVERY player 60 kids, for 4 straight games. Newby could have had 12 TD’s against HW, 3rd and 4th stringers played the entire 2nd half same thing over the final 1 1/2 quarters against Cathedral, and the entire second half against St Paul.
You dont know what your talking about.
