SoCal/NorCal Players of the Week

Two of this week’s SoCal/NorCal Players of the Week are Grace Garcia of Half Moon Bay and Dalton Durossette of Ceres. Photos: Prep2Prep.com & The Modesto Bee.

Two of our four honorees for this week are freshmen and one is a sophomore. They are from Redlands, Chatsworth, Ceres and Half Moon Bay. We have a pretty good idea you’ll be hearing about all of them throughout the current baseball-softball season.

Marcus Zofrea (Redlands) Soph.

Anytime someone throws a perfect game it will be hard to beat for honors such as Player of the Week and that’s what Marcus did last week.

The sophomore left hander pitched the game of his life during a 2-0 win over Rialto at the Babe Herman tournament. With his previous longest start this season being just four innings, he had nine strikeouts and he picked up his first win of the season.

For the season at the start of this week, he was 1-0 with a 0.88 ERA and had allowed just two earned runs over 16 innings with 16 strikeouts.

Janae Weise (Sierra Canyon, Chatsworth) Fr.

Don’t be surprised if softball is the next sport in which Sierra Canyon becomes a powerhouse. Last year’s team advanced to the CIF Southern Section Division V semifinals before a loss to Savanna of Anaheim. New head coach Regina Jorgensen also has some outstanding freshmen in the program, led by Weise.

In a 24-1 romp past Brentwood of Los Angeles last week, Weise whacked two homers and collected four RBI. She hit three home runs in a game during the previous week against Viewpoint of Calabasas and in her previous game before that she went 2-for-4 with five RBI and two homers against Crossroads of Santa Monica.

Entering this week for the season, Weise was batting .536 with nine homers and 20 RBI.

Dalton Durossette (Ceres) Fr.

It’s a lot harder for a freshman in baseball to be a NorCal POW, but we couldn’t resist with Durossette.

In a 7-0 win over Livingston branded as a showdown in the Western Athletic Conference by the Modesto Bee, Dalton dominated by tossing a no-hitter. The 6-foot-2, 180-pounder only walked one in his no-hitter and struck out eight. He also had two hits at the plate, including a double.

Earlier this season, Durosette had a complete game win for Ceres against defending CIF Sac-Joaquin Section Division III champion Manteca. He began this week batting .405 for the season with 15 hits and also was a 2-2 pitching with a 1.46 ERA. Something tells us we’ll be hearing more about Dalton in football, too. He was the JV starting quarterback last season and the head coach at Ceres is Bret Durossette.

Softball Player of the Week

Grace Garcia (Half Moon Bay) Jr.

Teams are having a hard time scoring against this talented junior as she allowed just one unearned run through her first seven appearances in the circle this season.

Last week, Garcia went seven shutout innings during a 8-0 win over Burlingame. Against the Panthers, she allowed just one hit and one walk while striking out six. Her streak of starts without allowing an earned run came to an end against Christopher of Gilroy but she ended the week with another complete game shutout, striking out 15 during a 2-0 win over Saratoga.

Earlier this season, Garcia had an 18 strikeout game and on the season at the start of this week was 8-1 with a 0.41 ERA. She also had 81 strikeouts in 51 innings.

Last season as a sophomore, Garcia was on the Prep2Prep All-Central Coast Section softball team after leading the Cougars to the CCS Divsion III championship.
