FB: Top 10 Rankings Update

There are a lot of changes after the first six teams in this week’s rankings and it’s good news for St. Augustine and Rancho Cucamonga. Del Oro also moves up to No. 7 in state and to No. 2 in NorCal.

(After games of Saturday, Sept. 24)
(Previous ranking in parentheses)

1. (1) Centennial (Corona) 4-1
No change for the Huskies, who have only lost to national No. 2 IMG Academy by one point in game they probably should have won.

2. (2) St. John Bosco (Bellflower) 4-1
Is SoCal that much better than NorCal this year? The Braves winning 55-16 over St. Mary’s of Stockton offers some proof, but it’s also possible that the top four in SoCal are that much better than any other teams this season in both NorCal and SoCal.

3. (3) Mater Dei (Santa Ana) 5-0
The Monarchs got another blowout, this one 42-0 over Edison of Huntington Beach. The MD-Bosco showdown is now just four weeks away (Oct. 21).

4. (4) Mission Viejo 5-0
The OC Register is starting to get ready for head coach Bob Johnson passing John Barnes (Los Alamitos) as the winningest head coach in OC history. We’re going to correct Barnes’ total to 323 (not counting forfeit win) while Register is going to go with 324 (counting forfeit win).

5. (5) Narbonne (Harbor City) 4-0
The Gauchos blanked Paramount 37-0 but the better news was Serra (Gardena) beating previous No. 11 Chaminade since they beat Serra earlier.

6. (6) De La Salle (Concord) 4-1
If this isn’t the year that the Spartans finally aren’t the best in NorCal, then it probably sure isn’t going to be next year. A very talented sophomore class is coming up.

7. (8) Del Oro (Loomis) 5-0
Head coach Casey Taylor’s squad opened Sierra Foothill League play with 41-21 win over Granite Bay.

8. (10) Cathedral Catholic (San Diego) 5-0
Beating the defending CIF Central Section D1 champions, Liberty of Bakersfield, 49-7, moves up the Dons in our rankings.

9. (13) St. Augustine (San Diego) 5-0
That three-point win over L.A. Loyola is looking better after Loyola knocked off Bishop Amat. Moving the Saints right behind CC also makes these rankings closer to the ones by the San Diego Section media poll, which has St. Aug one spot higher at No. 1 with CC at No. 2.

10. (23) Rancho Cucamonga 5-0
It’s a major jump for the Cougars, who benefit for having a 41-20 win over a Murrieta Valley squad that just knocked off previous No. 9 Oaks Christian.
