FB: Top 10 Rankings Update

Oaks Christian gets a bump after its big win over Chaminade, but not much else changed from the preseason after opening week of 2016 season.

NOTE: Our updated State Top 25 with list of many other teams on the bubble will be posted each week but will require Gold Club membership to see. Our breakdowns and analysis of what’s coming up and what’s already happened can’t be matched anywhere else because no one has been following the statewide scene as long as we have. (After games of Saturday, Aug. 27)
(Preseason ranking in parentheses)

1. (1) De La Salle (Concord) 1-0
Looking for a seventh CIF Open Division state title in the last eight years, the Spartans started out with a solid 42-7 win over Amador Valley of Pleasanton. Key stat: only 51 yards allowed in first half.

2. (2) Centennial (Corona) 1-0
Looking for a third straight CIF Southern Section top division title, the Huskies were challenged in a 56-49 win over Chandler of Arizona. Chandler entered No. 1 in Arizona Class 6A so this was definitely a worthy opponent.

3. (3) St. John Bosco (Bellflower) 1-0
The Braves’ trip to Nippert Stadium in Cincinnati to play St. Xavier of Cincinnati (a traditional powerhouse in Ohio) went well with a 34-0 blanking of St. X.

4. (4) Mater Dei (Santa Ana) 1-0
Yes, that was an impressive 63-14 win over Bishop Amat, but the Monarchs still have to be behind Bosco in our rankings possibly even until they play each other and even if Bosco loses to Bishop Gorman of Las Vegas.

5. (5) Mission Viejo 1-0
The way the Diablos rolled over Santa Margarita 48-21 in their first game it’s looking likely they’ll go 10-0 for the regular season will have their winning streak at 38 games heading into the CIFSS D1 playoffs.

6. (6) Vista Murrieta (Murrieta) 1-0
The significance of the Broncos’ 20-9 win over San Diego Madison will become apparent depending on how Madison does the rest of the season in San Diego.

7. (7) Narbonne (Harbor City) 1-0
The Gauchos’ front seven on defense was supposed to be a huge strength coming into the season and it was in a 34-12 win over Gardena Serra, which despite heavy grad losses still could end up as the top team in the Mission League.

8. (8) Folsom 1-0
Joe Curry took over as the Bulldogs’ QB and had six TD passes in the first half of eventual 56-35 triumph vs. Couer d’Alene of Idaho. They’ll probably be 6-0 when they play at Del Oro (Loomis) in Sierra Foothill League game.

9. (11) Oaks Christian (Westlake Village) 1-0
We’re going to give the Lions and jump in front of previous No. 10 Clayton Valley after they outlasted Chaminade of West Hills 65-55. Chaminade was right behind them at No. 12 in preseason state rankings.

10. (10) Clayton Valley (Concord) 1-0
The Ugly Eagles have a tough test this week at Honor Bowl in Mission Viejo against previous No. 9 Helix of La Mesa. Clayton Valley won its first game 35-21 vs. Reed of Sparks, Nevada.
