It takes some extra time, but as usual we have expanded our final state team rankings in baseball from Top 20 overall to Top 40 overall. Writeups and comments from each team have been completed as well. Teams moving up at the end include section champions Cathedral Catholic and Elk Grove. Some of the hardest to rank in expanded section include No. 22 Acalanes, No. 24 Granite Hills and No. 35 Mater Dei of Santa Ana.

1. (1) BUCHANAN (CLOVIS) 30-1
The big news Bears land this week wasn’t officially being named No. 1 in the state, but learning that Deer Park High of Texas, which was 32-0 and ranked No. 1 in some national rankings, lost in its state playoffs, thereby moving up Buchanan to No. 1 in the MaxPreps poll to go with USA Today. Head coach Tom Donald’s team capped its season last week with a 4-0 win over Clovis North in the CIF Central Section Division I final. It also was the program’s second straight section crown. We have heard some grumbling from some coaches around the state about the team not playing any games from outside of the CIF Central Section. That didn’t matter this season, but it might at some point.
