LeBron “King” James Mag Cover

Back when Cal-Hi Sports was part of Student Sports and editor Mark Tennis was serving as editor of both publications (before internet sites exploded), we once chose a junior from Akron, Ohio to be on the cover of Student Sports’ national 2001-02 preseason basketball issue. The cover headline chosen was: King James The New Version. Is this where LeBron’s nickname began? We don’t claim it, but we never saw it used anywhere earlier. Also, this issue of Student Sports is probably the best one we ever did in the 11 years of doing those national magazines. It not only included LeBron’s cover story written by a prep writer from Akron (Brian Windhorst) who has continued to write about LeBron and now works for ESPN. It was done six weeks before Sports Illustrated’s famous “The Chosen One” debuted) but several writeups on how schools dealt with the 9/11 tragedy plus coverage of the legendary De La Salle vs. Long Beach Poly football game.

We have limited copies of this issue remaining. Price: $45.

I have a couple of copies left. You can send a check for $35 to Cal-Hi Sports, PO Box 4321, Stockton CA 95204. That would cover the cost of shipping it as well. Thanks.
