Can St. Mary’s add to Stockton list?

If the St. Mary’s of Stockton girls can get past Mater Dei of Santa Ana (a huge IF) and win in Saturday’s CIF Open Division state final, the Rams will be the State Team of the Year.

Ironically, in 2009, some ranked St. Mary’s higher than Mater Dei in national polls (at least one) but we picked Mater Dei at No. 1 and St. Mary’s at No. 2 due to a head-to-head result.
Record Book
With the Open Division, at least that problem has been solved.

Here is a list of teams from the city of Stockton (our home base) that currently appear in the Cal-Hi Sports state record book as a State Team of the Year:

1992 – Lincoln (Stockton) 35-3 softball
1991 – Lincoln (Stockton) 29-3 softball
1987 – Lincoln (Stockton) 30-0 softball
1984 – Lincoln (Stockton) 37-1 softball
1964 – Stagg (Stockton) 10-0 football
1946 – Stockton High 20-2 boys basketball
1938 – Stockton High 9-0 football
1933 – Stockton High 16-2 boys basketball
1930 – Stockton High boys swimming
1928 – Stockton High 14-0 boys basketball
1925 – Stockton High 12-3 boys basketball
1923 – Stockton High 16-1 boys basketball
1923 – Stockton High boys swimming
1922 – Stockton High 13-0 boys basketball
1922 – Stockton High boys swimming
1921 – Stockton High boys swimming
1910 – Stockton High 10-2 boys basketball
1907 – Stockton High boys basketball

Notes: Mater Dei as a school has almost that many CIF state titles just counting boys and girls basketball (15). Going through the book and compiling this list also shows once again how foolish it was back in the day for Stockton High to have closed. That school would still have a great tradition today if it had never closed (like Sacramento, San Diego, Long Beach Poly, Bakersfield, etc.).
